Notes: Abstract Mössbauer spectra of /pheophytinato a/ iron/III/ chloride [Fe/Pheo-a/Cl] and /pheophytinato b/ iron/III/ chloride [Fe/Pheo-b/Cl] have revealed that the central iron/III/ ion is in a high-spin state and axially coordinated by chloride ions in solid phase. Temperature-dependent asymmetry observed for the quadrupole splitting doublet of iron/III/ pheophytins, i.e., Fe/Pheo-a/Cl and Fe/Pheo-b/Cl, is interpreted on the basis of the zero-field splitting. The structural difference between iron/III/ pheophytins and iron/III/ porphyrins is reflected in the quadrupole splitting more than in the isomer shift. Magnetic behaviour of iron/III/ pheophytins near 4.2 K is very similar to that of iron/III/ porphyrins.

Notes: Summary The high-performance liquid chromatography of fourteen rhenium complexes with phosphorus and 2,2′-bipyridine-derivative ligands has been examined. Good separation between these complexes was achieved by use of an ODS column with a 60∶40 (v/v) mixture of MeOH and KH2PO4-NaOH buffer as mobile phase. Linear correlations were observed between the capacity factors of the mono-phosphorus complexes and Fujita's organicity/inorganicity ratios for the phosphorus ligands, revealing that Fujita's organicity/inorganicity parameters are useful for evaluating of the retention behavior of these complexes.

Notes: Abstract /Pyropheophytinato a/ iron/III/ chloride [Fe/Pyropheo-a/Cl] and /pyropheophytinato b/ iron/III/ chloride [Fe/Pyropheo-b/Cl] have been prepared and characterized by Mössbauer spectroscopy. The Mössbauer parameters of the iron/III/pyropheophytins are similar to those of iron/III/ porphyrins. A comparison of the quadrupole splittings for the iron/III/ pyropheophytins with those for the iron/III/ pheophytins suggests that the deviations of the cyclopentenone ring and the saturated pyrrole ring from the macrocyclic plane become smaller with the removal of the methoxycarbonyl group.

Notes: Abstract. The effects of (+)-8′,8′,8′-trifluoroabscisic acid (trifluoro-ABA) on α-amylase expression were studied in rice embryoless half-seeds, scutella, and suspension-cultured cells derived from the embryo, and the effects of the analog on sugar accumulation were also studied in scutella and suspension-cultured cells. Treatment with (+)-trifluoro-ABA strongly inhibited the gibberellic acid-inducible expression of α-amylase I-1 encoded by RAmy1A in the aleurone layers of embryoless half-seeds at the levels of transcription, protein synthesis, and enzyme activity. It was also found that (+)-trifluoro-ABA stimulated (i) the uptake of glucose from the incubation medium and (ii) the synthesis of sucrose in scutellar tissues and suspension-cultured cells of rice. The biological activity of (+)-trifluoro-ABA was found to be more potent and persistent than that of natural ABA. We further examined the effects of trifluoro-ABA on the expression of α-amylase I-1 in scutellar tissues and suspension-cultured cells. It was found that (+)-trifluoro-ABA did not inhibit the formation of α-amylase I-1 in the absence of external glucose. However, glucose and (+)-trifluoro-ABA cooperatively suppressed the formation of α-amylase I-1. Judging from these results, we conclude that the regulatory mechanism for the expression of α-amylase I-1 in the scutellar epithelium is distinguishable from that operating in the aleurone layer.

Notes: In low-temperature tranport measurements, we observed two distinct magnetization-dependent features. Before magnetization, aperiodic conductance oscillations against gate voltage sweep were observed: after magnetization, periodic and reproducible oscillations were recorded. In studying the current-voltage characteristics, we observed Coulomb blockade-like features. The Coulomb gap is reduced to about a half when external magnetic fields of ±5000 Gs are applied, which seems to indicate expansion of the dot size. To study the origin of those transport features, magnetic force microscopy (MFM) measurements have been made for similar Ni dot samples at ambient conditions. MFM observation suggests preliminary domain wall formation inside the dot before magnetization. This then disappears after magnetization, implying a single domain formation for the entire dot. On the basis of those results, we propose a domain-related transport model which essentially interprets the observed transport properties.

Notes: Abstract A rapid method, using 12 restriction enzymes, was employed to analyze variations in ribosomal DNA (rDNA) spacers in a study of phylogenetic relationships betweenHomo sapiens and related species. We mapped restriction sites in “the external and internal spacer regions and compared the arrangements of sites. The estimated sequence divergence betweenHomo sapiens andPan troglodytes, Pan paniscus, Gorilla gorilla, Pongo pygmaeus, Hylobates lar, H. agilis, andMacaca fuscata was 2.7, 2.3, 3.8, 7.3, 6.8, 7.8, and 14.1%, respectively. The genetic relationships inferred from these distances generally correspond to those inferred from analyses of other molecular markers in the literature. The divergence betweenH. lar andH. agilis and betweenH. lar andH. syndactylus was 0.34 and 2.4%, respectively.

Notes: Abstract Using nucleotide sequences of 5S ribosomal RNAs from 2 hydrozoan jellyfishes, 3 scyphozoan jellyfishes and 2 sea anemones, a phylogenetic tree of Cnidaria has been constructed to elucidate the evolutionary relationships of radial and bilateral symmetries. The 3 classes of Cnidaria examined herein belong to one branch, which does not include other metazoan phyla such as the Platyhelminthes. The Hydrozoa (having radial symmetry without septa) and the Scyphozoa (having radial symmetry with septa) are more closely related to each other than to the Anthozoa (having bilateral symmetry with septa). In classical taxonomy, multicellular animals are considered to have evolved through organisms with radial symmetry (e.g., Cnidaria) to bilateral symmetry. Our results, however, indicate that the emergence of the Bilateria was earlier than that of the Radiata, suggesting (in opposition to Haeckel's view) that the radial symmetry of Cnidaria is an evolutionary dead end.

Notes: Abstract The electronic structure of anion-substituted iron chlorophyll a [Fe(Chl-a)X] and b [Fe(Chl-b)X] (X=Cl−, NCS−, Br−, I−, CH3COO−) has been characterized by Mössbauer spectroscopy. The central iron ion in these complexes is in a ferric high-spin state. The π-donation from the anion plays an important role in the bonding between the iron ion and the anion. The quadrupole splitting reflects the structural difference between iron chlorophylls and iron porphyrins.
