    Notes: Abstract —The presence of anisotropy beneath the Iberian Peninsula and its main distinctive features can be established through the analysis of teleseismic shear-wave splitting observed in the ILIHA-NARS experiment. In this experiment, an homogeneous data set is provided by a network of 14 broad-band stations deployed over the entire peninsula for about one year. Even if technical problems led to an amount of data smaller than expected, significant variations in the inferred fast velocity direction are observed for stations located in different Iberian domains. The stations in Central and East Iberia show a fast velocity direction oriented roughly E–W, coincident with previous results in Toledo. A clearly different NE–SW direction is observed in the Ossa-Morena zone, supporting the image from a previous regional experiment. The observed delay times lie between 0.5 and 1 s. Although large-scale mechanisms, such as the absolute plate motion of Eurasia, can be invoked to explain the origin of anisotropic features in many sites, the regional variations observed in some domains imply that differentiated origins of the anisotropy have to be considered, probably related to the particular tectonics in the area. An interesting example of this fact is provided by the stations in the Betic chain; the fast velocity direction inferred for a station located in the limit of the External Betics (South Iberian domain), oriented N80°E, is clearly different from the N15–35°E direction observed in the Internal Betics (Alboran crustal domain), the origin of which has to be related to the Alpine building of the chain.

    Notes: Abstract —A tight array of seismographs spanning a 500 km traverse of southern Tibet resolved anisotropy from SKS with a spatial variation of its direction and an increase northward of the splitting delay, as well as of its first arrival residual. Both waves split by velocity anisotropy are slow relative to P and their waveform analysis may be interpreted to suggest attenuation anisotropy. The array here provides examples of residuals and splitting of other S waves which do not tightly conform to the anisotropy assumed in the simplest model of olivine of transverse isotropy with horizontal symmetry axis. S waves are also split, with parameters which vary along the array, and hence are relevant to near-receiver structure like those of SKS. Their splitting delay, for non-vertical incidence and polarization, appears larger than that for SKS. Residuals of S-wave first arrivals and splitting delays increase less northwards for S than SKS. Anisotropy with a slow vertical axis may account for these observations. Its origin may be related to horizontal shear or flow in low-velocity layers.

    Notes: Abstract Seismic studies of the last ten years in the Pyrenees (deep seismic profiles, fan profiles at critical distance, teleseismic travel-time residuals, seismicity from temporary networks) and their most significant results concerning crustal thickness in the different structural units of the range, sharpness of the transition between these units at depth, and east-west lateral evolution are reviewed in this paper. Focal mechanisms for three recent earthquakes ofM≥4 are given, and connections of local seismicity with major tectonic structures such as the North Pyrenean Fault and its western prolongation at depth are described.

    Notes: Abstract Immunological cross-reactivity between cell wall proteins obtained from two yeast genera (Candida tropicalis and Saccharomyces cerevisiae) is reported. Specific retention of two cell wall proteins from Saccharomyces cerevisiae by an immunoabsorbent column coupled with antibodies against phosphate binding protein 2 (PiBP2) from Candida tropicalis allowed to generate antibodies against the proteins from S. cerevisiae. These antibodies were effective in inhibiting phosphate uptake by S. cerevisiae cells. The proteins from S. cerevisiae displayed a phosphate binding activity which was inhibited in the presence of the forementioned antibodies. These results and the observation that the amount of these proteins in the shock fluid was dependent of the growth conditions (i.e., in the presence or in the absence of phosphate) support the idea that these proteins are involved in the high affinity phosphate transport system.

    Notes: Summary During the development ofBombyx mori (monovoltin race) ecdysteroid levels were determined in oocytes, eggs, and haemolymph of larvae, and in the haemolymph of pupae. In haemolymph, the only RIA reactive materials are ecdysone and ecdysterone. In oocytes and eggs, other ecdysteroids are also detected. During larval instars, the ecdysteroid levels are low whereas they are very high during morphogenetic periods. During embryonic diapause, the ecdysone titer decreases during the cessation of morphogenesis.

    Notes: Abstract Continuous seismic monitoring at Martinique since the 1902 eruption of the Montagne Pelée volcano did not detect local earthquakes for the first 70 years. For the only eruption which occurred in this time span in 1929 the seismograph was 20 km away and of a standard type, not particularly suited for the detection of small-scale local seismicity. Improvement of the monitoring array over the last 15 years with the installation of sensors on the volcano itself allowed the detection of signals of local origin which were interpreted as being due to surface sources, such as rockfalls and landslides. Since December 1985 seismic sources in the volcano itself, i.e. small earthquakes at shallow depth, were identified and located with the aid of a temporary upgrading of the array close to these weak sources. Such an onset of local seismicity could not have been detected with previous seismic equipment; such episodes of seismicity in the volcano might have occurred in the past, apparently quiescent history of the volcano as the reinterpretation of seismograms of some events in 1976 would indicate, without evolving to more important volcanic phenomena. For seismographs on volcanoes the constant upgrading of observation capabilities is certainly perferred to a strict continuity of standard observations.

    Notes: Abstract. Inspired by recent developments of moose models, we reconsider low-energy effective theories of Goldstone bosons, gauge fields and chiral fermions applied to low-energy QCD and to Higgs-less electroweak symmetry breaking. Couplings and the corresponding reduction of symmetry are introduced via constraints enforced by a set of non-propagating covariantly constant spurion fields. Relics of the latter are used as small expansion parameters conjointly with the usual low-energy expansion. Certain couplings can only appear at higher orders of the spurion expansion and, consequently, they become naturally suppressed independently of the idea of dimensional deconstruction. At leading order this leads to a set of generalized Weinberg sum rules and to the suppression of non-standard couplings to fermions in Higgs-less EWSB models with the minimal particle content. Within the latter, higher spurion terms allow for a fermion mass matrix with the standard CKM structure and C P violation. In addition, Majorana masses for neutrinos are possible. Examples of non-minimal models are briefly mentioned.

    Notes: Abstract The studies of Azores seismicity generally show shocks with either normal faulting or right-lateral strike-slip along the ESE direction, compatible with a eastward relative motion of the Eurasian (EU) relative to the African (AF) plate. However, the 1 January 1980 earthquake was interpreted as a clear left-lateral strike-slip shock along the N150E direction. This pattern is difficult to explain in terms of the relative motion between the EU, AF and North American (NA) plates: all available models for the present day movement of this triple junction fail to explain the regional variability in the stress conditions of the area. Here we present data from a 34-day long Ocean Bottom Seismograph array deployment. We show that the seismicity is distributed along a band aligned with the island chain itself, and is concentrated along several faults with an approximate N150E strike, cutting the Azores plateau in all the area covered by the OBS network. The combination of these new results with other geophysical data permits us to conclude that the tectonic setting of the Azores plateau is characterised by the existence of two sets of faults, in the N120E and N150E directions, defining several crustal blocks, whose relative motion accommodates the interaction of the three megaplates. The deformation of these tectonic blocks is probably driven by the shear between the EU and AF plates. This model explains well the spatial variability of the stress conditions in the Azores domain, the combination of dextral and sinistral strike slip mechanisms and the observed seismotectonics of the Azores islands.
