Notes: Summary The chromosome complements of eighty brain cells ofHylemya antiqua have been studied. The eighty cells were found in thirty-three larvae. Total complement length (TCL) is not randomly distributed among the larvae. Because there is an inverse correlation between chromosome length and width, it appears that in the cells studied the different chromosome lengths are partly expressions of different stages of metaphase contraction. It is suggested that synchronous division of cells still occurs in late larvae. The length of each chromosome arm is highly correlated with that of every other arm. It is possible that the correlations are complete but that inadequate technique causes the departures from completeness which are observed. The chromosome lengths are corrected slightly for distortions, but the corrections make very little difference in the correlation coefficients. There is a high value for the correlation between the correlation of two arm lengths and the sum of the two arm lengths. This is to be expected if the perfect correlation between all arm lengths is being obscured by errors of drawing and measurement. The autosomal arms have very similar coefficients of variation. The arm ratios (length of long arm divided by short arm) are not correlated with TCL or with each other, and arm ratio is randomly distributed among the larvae. The sex chromosomes have a smaller coefficient of variation than the autosomes, so that they are relatively large in small cells and relatively small in large cells. Twenty-two cells inHylemya fugax were measured. The autosomes also showed a high correlation between arm lengths. An entirely heterochromatic autosomal arm showed the same phenomenon of a low coefficient of variation which was shown by the heteropycnotic sex chromosomes inH. antiqua. The low variability of heterochromatic regions accompanied by an apparently non-random distribution of the TCL may produce an erroneous picture of the species complement when dealing with small numbers. It is suggested that for simplicity in using cytological observations of this sort for taxonomic purposes, the technique of measuring the percent TCL of a chromosome plus its arm ratio be replaced by the percent TCL of each arm plus the average length difference between the arms of each chromosome pair in units of percent TCL.

Notes: Summary Laminin immunoreactivity is thought to be masked in formalin-fixed sections since proteolytic treatment is required to unmask it. We analyzed this masking with frozen and formalin-fixed human autopsy brains obtained at various postmortem periods. In unfixed, frozen sections, intense immunoreactivity was invariably detected in vascular walls of entire sections. When such sections were postfixed in formalin, immunoreactivity was not diminished even after prolonged fixation. In vibratome sections of brain fixed in formalin in situ, immunoreactivity varied with postmortem delay: in most cases, immunoreactivity was weak and restricted to superficial cortical layers. However, the extent of immunoreactivity increased with postmortem delay. Two cases fixed after prolonged postmortem periods revealed moderate immunoreactivity throughout the sections. We also investigated rat brains processed without postmortem delay. In unfixed frozen sections, immunoreactivity again was observed throughout the sections, independent of the length of any postfixation. In vibratome sections of fixed rat brain, immunoreactivity was restricted to the cutting margins of the brain blocks and around a trauma-induced cortical lesion, regardless of how long the blocks had been kept in fixative. Our data suggest that postmortem proteolysis accomplishes similar unmasking of laminin antigen as digestion on paraffin sections and that such unmasking can also be effected by proteolysis induced by damaging tissue during cryostat sectioning of fresh tissue.

Notes: Abstract In an extension of previous work on the theory of statistical cross sections model calculations have been performed in the presence of weakly absorbing channels, a case which is of particular interest in applied work involving neutron capture or neutron scattering at low energies. Improved formulas for calculating the elastic enhancement factor and compound nucleus cross sections are presented. In our model calculations we find that the factorization condition for cross sections is not satisfied in cases where a few strongly and many weakly absorbing channels are mixed. However, even in these extreme cases, the formulas provide a good description of the computer-generated cross sections involving at least one strong channel. In addition, the structure of the formula for the elastic enhancement factor has been chosen so as to reproduce all known limiting values and to describe cases where many weakly absorbing channels contribute.

Notes: Abstract A simple selection rule for epitaxial growth techniques, which is based on morphological stability of the substrate surface is proposed. According to this rule a certain growth technique should be used for preparing a specific device structure of a three-dimensional monolithically integrated optical or electronic circuit. The formulae for morphological stability functions for LPE, MO, VPE, and MBE growth techniques are given. Calculations performed for the GaAs/Al x Ga1−x As material system by using the linear morphological stability theory of Mullins and Sekerka suggest that from the point of view of morphological stability the most suitable growth technique for fabrication of three-dimensional monolithically integrated optical and electronic device structures is the MBE technique.

Notes: Abstract Transverse energy distributions have been measured for collisions of 10 GeV/nucleon Si with targets of Al, Cu and Pb using a combination of a NaI wall and a uranium based sampling calorimeter. The measured cross sectionsdσ/dE T anddE T /dη are consistent with full stopping and an increase, with increasing values ofE T , of energy flow into large angles.

Notes: Abstract Nuclear data are numerical quantities that describe nuclear properties and nuclear interactions. Arranged into data libraries, they ultimately constitute the very basis of all nuclear applications. Nuclear data have to be measured, compiled, evaluated and validated so that users get the best and up-to-date information in an unrestricted manner. The paper provides an insight into this activity, describes the process from measurements to nuclear data services, illustrates key applications, and discusses future trends and developments.
