Notes: Abstract The sensitivity of the charmonium and bottomonium spectroscopy to the short distance part of the interquark potential is critically re-examined using the latest data. We confirm that the data cannot accomodate a QCD scale parameter $$\left( {\Lambda _{\overline {MS} } } \right)$$ smaller than about 150 MeV, whereas we find no constraint on larger values for the scale parameter, contrary to a previous analysis. The effect of dynamical heavy quark masses in the loop correction to the perturbative potential is studied in detail and the effective four quark theory with a massive charmed quark is found to give an accurate description of the perturbative potential for quarkonia of mass up to about 200 GeV. It is argued that the experimental determination of the mass ande + e − decay width of the 1S and 2S toponium resonances (of mass round 80 GeV) with the accuracy anticipated at the forthcominge + e − colliders should enable the QCD scale parameter to be determined to within ±100 MeV.

Notes: Abstract A novel approach to study electroweak physics at one-loop level in generic SU(2)L×U(1)Y theories is introduced. It separates the 1-loop corrections into two pieces: process specific ones from vertex and box contributions, and universal ones from contributions to the gauge boson propagators. The latter are parametrized in terms of four effective form factors $$\bar e^2 (q^2 ), \bar s^2 (q^2 ), \bar g_Z^2 (q^2 )$$ and $$\bar g_W^2 (q^2 )$$ corresponding to the γγ, γZ,ZZ andWW propagators. Under the assumption that only the Standard Model contributes to the process specific corrections, the magnitudes of the four form factors are determined atq 2=0 and atq 2=m Z 2 by fitting to all available precision experiments. These values are then compared systematically with predictions of SU(2)L×U(1)Y theories. In all fits α s (m Z ) and $$\bar \alpha (m_Z^2 )$$ are treated as external parameters in order to keep the interpretation as flexible as possible. The treatment of the electroweak data is presented in detail together with the relevant theoretical formulae used to interpret the data. No deviation from the Standard Model has been identified. Ranges of the top quark and Higgs boson masses are derived as functions of α s (m Z ) and $$\bar \alpha (m_Z^2 )$$ . Also discussed are consequences of the recent precision measurement of the left-right asymmetry at SLC as well as the impact of a top quark mass and an improvedW mass measurement.

Notes: Abstract. We examine how accurately the general HZV couplings, with $V=Z,\gamma$ , may be determined by studying $e^+e^-\to Hf\bar{f}$ processes at future $e^+e^-$ linear colliders. By using the optimal-observable method, which makes use of all available experimental information, we find out which combinations of the various HZV coupling terms may be constrained most efficiently with high luminosity. We also assess the benefits of measuring the tau-lepton helicities, identifying the bottom-hadron charges, polarizing the electron beam and running at two different collider energies. The HZZ couplings are generally found to be well constrained, even without these options, while the $HZ\gamma$ couplings are not. The constraints on the latter may be significantly improved by beam polarization.

Notes: Abstract. We determined the fraction of ‘slow’ and ‘fast’ conformations of bovine cytochrome c oxidase, following the kinetics of cyanide binding to the oxidized enzyme. We investigated whether treatment of heart mitochondrial particles with different commercially available types of cholate (standard and ultra-pure) can affect the fraction of cytochrome c oxidase in the two states. Compared to standard cholate, the use of ultra-pure cholate for solubilization of heart mitochondrial particles significantly increased the fraction of the fast enzyme. Complete homogeneity (∼100% fast) was observed when cytochrome c oxidase was solubilized with ultra-pure cholate from heart mitochondrial particles pre-equilibrated with AMP; equilibration with ADP yielded a much smaller fraction of fast enzyme (∼35%). These observations are discussed on the basis of the structural relationships between the known cholate-binding site and the binuclear cytochrome a3-CuB site: variation in the occupancy of this binding site with cholate or nucleotides may modify reactivity of the oxidized binuclear centre towards cyanide.

Notes: Abstract Fine structures were observed in the tunneling conductance of a sintered Bi 2223-SnO2 junction. The structures are weaker than those of a single crystalline Bi2212. They correspond to the Raman spectrum of Bi2223 and approximately to the phonon density of states of Bi2212. The structures must therefore be phonon structures, and phonons may contribute substantially to highT c superconductivity. Multiphonon structures are scarcely discernible. Hence we propose a new model, in place of the prior multiphonon model, to explain the rapid increase inT c with the CuO2 layer number. 2Δ (21 K)=68±4 meV inT c=98±5 K. 2Δ (0)/k B T c is 8.1±0.9. The temperature dependence of the gap was also observed and discussed.

Notes: Abstract. We study the effects of heavy Higgs bosons on the $t\overline{t}$ production process at photon linear colliders. The interference patterns between the resonant Higgs production amplitudes and the continuum QED amplitudes are examined. The patterns tell us not only the CP nature of the Higgs bosons but also the phase of the $\gamma\gamma$ -Higgs vertex which gives new information about the Higgs couplings to new charged particles. We point out that it is necessary to use circularly polarized photon beams to produce efficiently heavy Higgs bosons whose masses exceed the electron beam energy, and show that the above interference patterns of the production amplitudes can be studied by observing t and $\overline{t}$ decay angular distributions. Analytic expressions for the helicity amplitudes for the sequential process $\gamma\gamma \rightarrow t \overline{t} \rightarrow (bW^ + ) (\overline{b}W^-) \rightarrow (b f_1 \overline{f}_2) (\overline{b} f_3 \overline{f}_4)$ are presented in terms of the generic $\gamma\gamma \rightarrow t \overline{t}$ production amplitudes.

Notes: Abstract General expressions for single and pair production cross sections of excited leptons (e *,µ*,v *) are presented. Specific results are shown for a realisticSU(2)×U(1) invariant model. Pair production ine + e − annihilation can measure anomalous magnetic moments of excited leptons. Single production ofe * is dominated by thet-channel γ exchange contribution which makes its detection feasible up to masses just below thee + e − c.m. energy. Due to this small |t| enhancement effect, contributions from elastic and resonance scattering inep production ofe * are substantial. Realistic estimates of the excited lepton production cross section at HERA are given

Notes: Abstract We study possible deviations from the Standard Model in the reactione + e −→Zϕ, where ϕ denotes a spinless neutral boson. We show how theZ decay angular correlation can be used to extract detailed information on the ϕ couplings, such as the parity of ϕ, radiatively-induced form factor effects and possible CP violation in the scalar sector. Consequences of gauge invariant dimension six operators are discussed as an example.
