Notes: Abstract We consider a one-dimensional model of a system in contact with a heat bath: A particle (the system ormolecule) of massM, confined to the unit interval [0, 1], is surrounded by an infinite ideal gas (thebath of atoms) of point particles of massm with which it interacts via elastic collisions. The atoms are not affected by the walls at 0 and at 1. We obtain “convergence to equilibrium” for the molecule, from essentially any initial distribution on its position and velocity. The infinite composite system of molecule and bath has very good ergodic properties: it is a Bernoulli system.

Notes: Abstract We investigated whether quantitative ultrasound (QUS) parameters are associated with bone structure. In an in vitro study on 20 cubes of trabecular bone, we measured broadband ultrasound attenuation (BUA) and two newly defined parameters—ultrasound velocity through bone (UVB) and ultrasound attenuation in bone (UAB). Bone mineral density (BMD) was measured by dual X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and bone structure was assessed by microcomputed tomography (μCT) with approximately 80 μm spatial resolution. We found all three QUS parameters to be significantly associated with bone structure independently of BMD. UVB was largely influenced by trabecular separation, UAB by connectivity, and BUA by a combination of both. For a one standard deviation (SD) increase in UVB, a decrease in trabecular separation of 1.2 SD was required compared with a 1.4 SD increase in BMD for the same effect. A 1.0 SD increase in UAB required a reduction in connectivity of 1.4 SD. Multivariate models of QUS versus BMD combined with bone structure parameters showed squared correlation coefficients of r2=0.70–0.85 for UVB, r2=0.27–0.56 for UAB, and r2=0.30–0.68 for BUA compared with r2=0.18–0.58 for UVB, r2〈0.26 for UAB and r2〈0.13 for BUA for models including BMD alone. QUS thus reflects bone structure, and a combined analysis of QUS and BMD will allow for a more comprehensive assessment of skeletal status than either method alone.

Notes: Abstract We consider a dynamical system consisting of one large massive particle and an infinite number of light point particles. We prove that the motion of the massive particle is, in a suitable limit, described by the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process. This extends to three dimensions previous results by Holley in one dimension.

Notes: Abstract We extend, refine and give simple proofs of some recent results on the validity of global Markov properties for classical spin systems. One of the new results is that there is a global Markov property that is satisfied by equilibrium states in general. The proof of this establishes formulas for the entropy and free energy that show that these quantities are, ford-dimensional systems, given in terms of (d−1)-dimensional systems. Furthermore, we show that global Markov properties imply the absence of some types of symmetry breaking.

Notes: Abstract We show that the particle motion in Bohmian mechanics, given by the solution of an ordinary differential equation, exists globally: For a large class of potentials the singularities of the velocity field and infinity will not be reached in finite time for typical initial values. A substantial part of the analysis is based on the probabilistic significance of the quantum flux. We elucidate the connection between the conditions necessary for global existence and the self-adjointness of the Schrödinger Hamiltonian.

Notes: Summary Under suitable conditions the motion of a massive (Brownian) particle in a fluid is well described by a Langevin equation, i.e. an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process in which the influence of the fluid on the motion is taken into account by frictional and fluctuating forces. A mechanical model for such a description was previously given for the translational motion of a sphere in an ideal gas in the “Brownian limit”. Here that description is extended to include also the rotational motion of a massive convex body. The only probabilistic assumptions concern the initial distribution of the gas; the time evolution of the convex body-ideal gas system is entirely deterministic.

Notes: Summary Let η t be the symmetric nearest neighbor simple exclusion process on ℤ3 modified to allow the spontaneous creation and destruction of particles at the origin. We study the invariant measures for the system in this non-equilibrium situation, for which a net current of particles flows from the origin. We analyze the n-point correlations of the invariant measures, which for n=2 behave like max (x 1 x 2)−4.
