Notizen: Abstract This paper reports the investigation of mean and turbulent flow characteristics of a two-dimensional plane diffuser. Both experimental and theoretical details are considered. The experimental investigation consists of the measurement of mean velocity profiles, wall static pressure and turbulence stresses. Theoretical study involves the prediction of downstream velocity profiles and the distribution of turbulence kinetic energy using a well tested finite difference procedure. Two models, viz., Prandtl's mixing length hypothesis and k-ɛ model of turbulence, have been used and compared. The nondimensional static pressure distribution, the longitudinal pressure gradient, the pressure recovery coefficient, percentage recovery of static pressure, the variation of U max/U bar along the length of the diffuser and the blockage factor have been valuated from the predicted results and compared with the experimental data. Further, the predicted and the measured value of kinetic energy of turbulence have also been compared. It is seen that for the prediction of mean flow characteristics and to evaluate the performance of the diffuser, a simple turbulence model like Prandtl's mixing length hypothesis is quite adequate.

Notizen: Abstract A numerical solution for the transient natural convection flow over a vertical cylinder under the combined buoyancy effect of heat and mass transfer is presented. The velocity, temperature and concentration profiles, local and average skin-friction, Nusselt number and Sherwood number are shown graphically. It is observed that time taken to reach steady state increases with Schmidt number and decreases as combined buoyancy ratio parameter N increases. Stability and convergence of the finite difference scheme are established.

Notizen: Abstract The unsteady natural convection boundary layer flow over a semi-infinite vertical cylinder is considered with combined buoyancy force effects, for the situation in which the surface temperature T ′ w(x) and C ′ w(x) are subjected to the power-law surface heat and mass flux as K(T ′/r) = −ax n and D(C ′/r) = −bx m . The governing equations are solved by an implicit finite difference scheme of Crank-Nicolson method. Numerical results are obtained for different values of Prandtl number, Schmidt number ‘n’ and ‘m’. The velocity, temperature and concentration profiles, local and average skin-friction, Nusselt and Sherwood numbers are shown graphically. The local Nusselt and Sherwood number of the present study are compared with the available result and a good agreement is found to exist.

Notizen: Abstract Finite difference solution of the transient free-convection flow of an incompressible viscous fluid past an impulsively started semi-infinite vertical plate with heat and mass transfer is presented here. The steady state velocity, temperature and concentration profiles are shown graphically. Velocity profiles are compared with exact solution. It has been observed that there is a rise in the velocity due to the presence of a mass diffusion. An increase in Schmidt number, leads to a fall in the velocity. Stability and the convergence of the finite difference scheme are established.

Notizen: Abstract Experimental and numerical investigations of the three-dimensional flowfields in an isothermal model of an afterburner are presented. Five-hole pilot probe measurements along the entire length of the model in three different azimuthal planes, allow the determination of three mean velocity components which provide comprehensive information to aid understanding of such complex flows. The numerical calculations are performed using a SIMPLE based algorithm with staggered grid arrangement. The standardk-ɛ model is used for physical modeling. The numerical results agree quite satisfactorily with the time-mean velocity measurements. The predicted turbulence kinetic energy contours have also been presented.

Notizen: Abstract This paper describes the measurement of mean velocity and turbulence intensity using hot-wire anemometry inside the cylinder of a Diesel engine under motoring (non-firing) conditions. The effects of engine speed and compression ratio on mean velocity and turbulence intensity have been studied. In addition, turbulence scales have also been evaluated using auto-correlation function and power spectrum which are obtained from fluctuating velocity. The measurements were carried out at 4 different locations inside the piston cavity. Mean velocity and turbulence intensity are found to increase with speed. Increase in compression ratio has significantly increased the mean velocity at all crank angles. The main feature of this investigation is that the experiments have been conducted at higher compression ratios and a relatively high speed using a single high temperature straight wire probe.

Notizen: Abstract  The main aim of the present investigation is to experimentally study the flow parameters inside a spherical combustion chamber of an indirect injection diesel engine. For this a spherical chamber has been fitted in the cylinder head. Using a constant temperature hot-wire anemometer, measurements have been made under non-firing condition at 400 and 500 rpm during compression stroke. Mean velocity and turbulence intensity values are evaluated from the hot-wire signal. Measurements are made at three axial planes, six angular locations and four radial positions. Large variations of mean velocity and turbulence intensity have been observed within the chamber. From the measurements, the mean velocity and turbulence intensity are found to be maximum at 30° before compression TDC and these values are found to decrease towards the centre of the pre-chamber. The mean velocity and turbulence intensity distribution with respect to various locations and crank angles are presented and discussed.

The constants appearing in the proposed method are determined from a statistical analysis of the the test results of Hognestad, Clark and Baseet al. Experimental crackwidth values are compared with the crackwidth values computed from the equations given by CP110, Model Code, Gergely and Lutz and the proposed method and the results are discussed.
