    Notes: Abstract The Kumamoto oyster Crassostrea sikamea is distinguished from the closely related Pacific oyster C. gigas by concordant differences in 16S rDNA, allozymes, and a one-way gametic incompatibility. After repeated failures to find this oyster in its native habitat, we speculated in 1994 that “the Kumamoto oyster may be extinct in Japan”. In September 1996, we sampled small, deep-cupped oysters from the Ariake Sea and typed these for 16S rDNA and ITS-1 DNA markers previously shown to be diagnostic for the three most common oysters in the Ariake Sea, C. gigas, C. sikamea and  C. ariakensis. Our earlier suggestion of the demise of  C. sikamea proved incorrect. Of the 256 oysters sampled, 181 (71%) were  C. gigas, 53 (21%) were C. sikamea, and 22 (9%) were  C. ariakensis; no interspecific hybrids were observed. The distributions of C. sikamea and  C. ariakensis are clumped in the Ariake Sea:  C. sikamea occurs on the eastern and northern shores,  C. ariakensis occurs only in the northern part. These results emphasize the value of molecular markers for discriminating these morphologically plastic species both in the field and in aquaculture.

    Notes: Abstract A specially-designed rotating rig for producing near Couette flow was used in the calibration of a marginally elevated hot-wire shear stress probe. The probe was then used for measurements in both the turbulent boundary layer and pipe flows. Results showed that the mean wall shear stress can be accurately predicted and the near wall statistical quantities of intensity, skewness and flatness of shear stress fluctuations concurred well with previous works, thereby supporting the notion of a time-resolved shear stress probe for turbulent flows.

    Notes: Abstract. Mono-sized single-wall carbon nanotubes were formed in one-dimensional channels of AlPO4-5 single crystal (AFI) by pyrolysis of tripropylamine (TPA). Raman spectra have been measured for the TPA-AFI crystals thermally processed at different conditions. TPA molecules are carbonized at 400 °C, and carbon nanotubes were formed at 500 °C or above. The radial-breathing mode, which is special for carbon nanotube geometry, was observed. Three Raman-active modes with symmetry A 1g, E 1g, and E 2g were identified by detailed symmetrical analysis for the polarized-Raman spectra.

    Notes: Abstract The present paper studies the reliability-based structural optimization of the civil engineering in the seismic zone. The objective is to minimize the sum of construction material cost and the expected failure loss under severe earthquake, which is obtained by the sum of the products of the failure probability and its failure losses for the important failure modes. The set of constraints includes the deterministic constraints, and the constraints based on structural reliability – the reliability index constraints of structural element failure for the serviceability state under minor earthquake and the failure probability of the structural system for the ultimate limit state under severe earthquake. By introducing the load roughness index, the structural system reliability computation under hazard load can be greatly simplified, which is approximately determined by its weakest failure mode. Finally, the numerical example of high rising shear RC frame is calculated.

    Notes: Abstract  The interaction between anionic surfactants and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) are investigated using 13C NMR, ESR spectroscopy and surface tension measurements at the air/water interface. The behavior of single-chained surfactant, sodium dodecyl sulphonate (AS), is compared with that of the double-chained surfactant, sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl) phosphate (NaDEHP). The results showed that a surfactant–polymer complex of “necklace and head structure” is formed in AS aqueous solutions in the presence of PVP due to the hydrophobic interaction between PVP and AS. The AS micelles nucleate on the polymer hydrophobic sites, and the mobility of the AS head groups is not affected. But, for NaDEHP surfactant, it was found that PVP is little effective in influencing the monomer–micelle equilibrium and no surfactant– polymer complex formed in the NaDEHP aqueous solution.

    Notes: Abstract Adventitious root formation in excised cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) cotyledons was significantly promoted by (±)-cis-chrysanthemic acid at 0.006–1.8 mM. The effect of (±)-cis-chrysanthemic acid on indole-3-acetic acid (IAA)-induced rooting was additive. Rooting in excised cucumber cotyledons was significantly promoted by several isomers of chrysanthemic acid and sodium (±)-cis-chrysanthemate at 0.18 mM. Rooting in mung bean (Phaseolus radiatus L.) hypocotyls was also stimulated by the sodium salt at 0.06–0.6 mM. Rooting of kidney bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) hypocotyls was also clearly enhanced by sodium (±)-cis-chrysanthemate at 0.18–6 mM.

    Notes: Abstract An improved filter paper disk bioassay for determining activities of plant growth regulators was developed and evaluated. Indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), (±)-abscisic acid (ABA), and 6-furfurylamino-purine (kinetin) were dissolved in 95% ethanol at fixed dilutions. Specific concentrations of each growth regulator were then evenly dropped onto individual 6-cm paper disks and the solvent evaporated. The activities of the above three water-insoluble plant growth regulators in both solution and the disk assay were compared using the excised cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) cotyledon root formation bioassay (IAA), wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) coleoptile straight growth bioassay (ABA), and cucumber cotyledon expansion bioassay (kinetin), and similar results were obtained at each concentration. The possible principle of this method has been studied using the cucumber cotyledon expansion bioassay. The results suggested that the disks, as carriers, had highly dispersed kinetin molecules on them and greatly accelerated the dissolution and diffusion of kinetin from disks to water.

    Notes: Abstract. We have used a rabbit leg-lengthening model for detailed studies of the histology of distraction osteogenesis. Some unusual features of the endochondral ossification that occurs during the rapid transition of cartilage to bone in the regenerate were observed. Histological staining techniques together with immunohistochemistry and nonradioactive in situ mRNA hybridization for cartilage and bone-related molecules have been used to document the presence of an overlapping cartilage-bone phenotype in cells of the cartilage-bone transitional region. In those particular areas, some chondrocytes appeared to be directly transformed into newly formed bone trabeculae which are surrounded by bone matrix. Acid phosphatases were found within the cartilage matrix in some of the cartilage/bone transitional regions and type I collagen mRNA and type II collagen protein were found together in some of the marginal hypertrophic chondrocytes. This study indicates an unusual role of chondrocytes in the process of ossification at a distraction rate of 1.3 mm/day in the rabbit. Further direct evidence is required to prove the hypothesis that the hypertrophic chondrocytes may transdifferentiate into bone cells in this model.

    Notes: Abstract A mixed finite element method is presented for the large strain analysis of rubber-like materials, which are considered to be nearly incompressible. Two types of constitutive relations are included: generalized Rivlin and Ogden's models. The finite element equations are derived on the basis of a perturbed Lagrangian variational principle from which both the displacement and pressure fields are independently approximated by appropriate shape functions. A physically meaningful pressure parameter is introduced in the expression of complementary energy. In the paper, a special effort is made to split the deformation energy into two distinct parts: isochoric and hydrostatic parts. By doing this, a quadratic convergence rate of nonlinear iterative solution is achieved, particularly for problems deformed in the large strain range. The finite element equations are specialized for a two-dimensional 9-node Lagrange element with three-term pressure parameters. Five examples are given to demonstrate the application of the proposed numerical algorithm.
