    Notes: Abstract The second law may be ‘time’s arrow’ but activation energies (chemical kinetics) prevent second law predictions from occurring for femtoseconds to eons. This is humanly important: Activation energies not only protect all the organic chemicals in our bodies and our oxidizable possessions from instant combustion in air, but also our breakable skis and surfboards (and legs) from disastrous fracture. Murphy’s Law is often applied to chemical and physical mishaps—things going wrong. But things do not always follow the second law and burst into flame or break! Chemical kinetics is the reason Murphy’s Law usually fails.

    Notes: Abstract Data from Equator-S and Geotail are used to study the dynamics of the plasma sheet observed during a substorm with multiple intensifications on 25 April 1998, when both spacecraft were located in the early morning sector (03–04 MLT) at a radial distance of 10–11 RE. In association with the onset of a poleward expansion of the aurora and the westward electrojet in the premidnight and midnight sector, both satellites in the morning sector observed plasma sheet thinning and changes toward a more tail-like field configuration. During the subsequent poleward expansion in a wider local time sector (20−04 MLT), on the other hand, the magnetic field configuration at both satellites changed into a more dipolar configuration and both satellites encountered again the hot plasma sheet. High-speed plasma flows with velocities of up to 600 km/s and lasting 2–5 min were observed in the plasma sheet and near its boundary during this plasma sheet expansion. These high-speed flows included significant dawn-dusk flows and had a shear structure. They may have been produced by an induced electric field at the local dipolarization region and/or by an enhanced pressure gradient associated with the injection in the midnight plasma sheet.

    Notes: Abstract  Inclusion body myositis (IBM) is a form of idiopathic inflammatory myopathy of unknown aetiology. A strong association with HLA class II (HLA-DR3) suggested a role for genes in the human major histocompatibility complex (MHC) in the predisposition to this disease. In this study, we have taken advantage of the ancestral haplotype (AH) concept and historical recombinations to map for a possible susceptibility gene(s) in the MHC. We performed detailed typing of three MHC-related HSP70 genes and defined allelic combinations in the context of MHC AH. We also modified existing methods to give a simple and accurate method for typing two TNF microsatellites. Using the HSP70 and TNF markers and HLA-DR, –B, and C4 typing of our patients with IBM, we defined a potential site for the MHC-associated susceptibility gene(s) in the region between HLA-DR and C4.

    Notes: Abstract An extensive study of the IMP-6 and IMP-8 plasma and radio wave data has been performed to try to find electron plasma oscillations associated with type III radio noise bursts and low energy solar electrons. This study shows that electron plasma oscillations are seldom observed in association with solar electron events and type III radio bursts at 1.0 AU. In nearly four years of observations only one event was found in which electron plasma oscillations are clearly associated with solar electrons. Numerous cases were found in which no electron plasma oscillations with field strengths greater than 1 μ V/m could be detected even though electrons from the solar flare were clearly detected at the spacecraft. For the one case in which electron plasma oscillations are definitely produced by the electrons ejected by the solar flare, the electric field strength is very small, only about 100 μV/m. This field strength is about a factor of ten smaller than the amplitude of electron plasma oscillations generated by electrons streaming into the solar wind from the bow shock. Electromagnetic radiation, believed to be similar to the type III radio emission, is also observed coming from the region of more intense electron plasma oscillations upstream of the bow shock. Quantitative calculations of the rate of conversion of the plasma oscillation energy to electromagnetic radiation are presented for plasma oscillations excited by both solar electrons and electrons from the bow shock. These calculations show that neither the type III radio emissions nor the radiation from upstream of the bow shock can be adequately explained by a current theory for the coupling of electron plasma oscillations to electromagnetic radiation. Possible ways of resolving these difficulties are discussed.

    Notes: Abstract This study uses data from the young women's and new youth cohort of the National Longitudinal Surveys of Youth Labor Market Experience to examine the extent to which socioeconomic background factors and race have changed in their ability to predict a first birth before age 19 between 1968 and 1980 for women aged nineteen to twenty-three. The authors find little support for their hypothesis that the increasing availability of contraception and abortion for young women from all social classes reduces the traditionally strong inverse association between social class and early childbearing. There is evidence that, even after controlling for changes in socioeconomic background factors, black young women are significantly more likely than their white counterparts to bear children before age 19 in 1980 and the relative gap between races in this regard did not alter perceptively during that period.
