Notes: Abstract Cytological evidence for the existence of a Y-autosomal rearrangement in meiotic cells of Sxr mice has been sought. At pachytene, in silverstained light microscope spread preparations of XY, Sxr/+ and XO, Sxr/+ spermatocytes, evidence for pairing or association between a possible Y-bearing segment of a specific autosome and a sex chromosome could not, however, be found. Such sex chromosome-autosome associations as were seen were non-specific in nature, and occurred no more often in Sxr mice than in controls.

Notes: Summary Trisomy 8, in mosaic or non-mosaic form is an extremely rare chromosomal condition in man. Liveborn subjects usually present with mental retardation, bone and joint anomalies and a variety of other physical anomalies. The mental retardation associated with the condition is, however, usually moderate compared to that found in other viable human autosomal trisomic conditions. The present report describes a trisomy 8 mosaic male subject with normal IQ and near-normal phenotype, ascertained through infertility. Chromosome studies on peripheral blood lymphocytes reveal a pure trisomy 8 constitution; cultured skin fibroblasts show 46,XY/47,XY+8 mosaicism. At meiosis, the extra No. 8 chromosome is missing from the germ line. The testicular histology indicates a germ cell maturation arrest in many spermatocytes and the patient is severely oligospermic. Biochemical studies to assay levels of glutathione reductase, a red cell enzyme, the gene for which resides in chromosome 8, show increased levels in the trisomy 8 patient compared with controls.

Notes: Abstract The diamines putrescine and cadaverine and the polyamines spermine and spermidine inhibited the senescence of nonphotosynthetic cultures of Paul's Scarlet rose. Response was observed when the media of stationary phase cultures was adjusted to either 1 mM of cadaverine or putrescine; or 0.1 μM of either spermine or spermidine along with 2% sucrose in all cases. Senescence of the cultures was followed by microscopic examination of cell aliquots removed at 10 day intervals and treated with the vital stain, fluorescein diacetate.

Notes: Summary Hydrogen peroxide generated by phagocytizing granulocytes can prevent platelet aggregation induced by ADP or collagen but not by endotoxin. Endotoxin tolerance enhances granulocyte mobilization in response to endotoxin and reduces aggregation induced by endotoxin but not ADP or collagen.

Notes: Abstract Methionine sulfoximine provided at a concentration which inhibits photosynthesis in intact leaves (10 mM) had no significant influence on the rate of photosynthesis of isolated pea leaf chloroplasts. In contrast, ammonium, 3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1,1-dimethylurea, and D,L-glyceraldehyde all strongly inhibited the photosynthesis of isolated chloroplasts. We conclude that low concentrations of methionine sulfoximine (up to 10 mM) have no direct effect on the photosynthetic process.

Notes: Abstract Monoclonal antibodies have been obtained which react with gonococcal outer membrane protein I. One antibody recognised the majority of strains expressing P.IA and another recognised the majority of strains expressing P.IB. In in vitro tests both antibodies were bactericidal in the presence of complement, opsonic for phagocytosis by human PMN and protected epithelial cells against gonococcal invasion. Thus conserved epitopes on P.I. are potentially effective targets for immunoprophylaxis.

Notes: Summary Cultivars of tomatoes, cucumbers, lettuce and peppers have been bred for resistance to one or more pathogens. Some tomato and cucumber cultivars have resistance to a wide range of diseases. Resistance has been transient in many cases and a succession of cultivars with new genes or new combinations of resistance genes has been necessary to maintain control. There has been a number of notable exceptions and these have included durable resistance to such pathogens asFulvia fulva and tomato mosaic virus. With lettuce the resistance situation is complicated by the occurrence of fungicide resistant pathotypes. There are no strains ofAgaricus bisporus purposely bred for disease resistance. In protected flower crops only resistance to Fusarium wilt in carnations has been purposely bred but differences in disease resistance are apparent in cultivars of many ornamental crops. This is particularly so in chrysanthemums where there are cultivars with resistance to many of the major pathogens. Similar situations occur with other flower crops and pot plants. Cultivars of some species have not been systematically investigated for resistance. The need for genetic resistance will increase with the further reduction, in the limits on pesticide use and an increasing public awareness and importance of pesticide pollution.

Notes: Summary Removal of all but one leaf from pepper plants prevented the senescence of the remaining leaf and caused increases of approximately 140, 200, and 200%, respectively in leaf area, weight, and nitrate reductase activity. Development of the fruit (fresh and dry weight increases) was only approximately 65% of that of fruit on control plants.
