Notes: Abstract The many unusual properties of the ternary molybdenum chalcogenides of the type MMo6X8 (M=Metal, X=Chalcogen) are reviewed. Special emphasis is put on the superconducting properties like critical temperature, critical field and the problem of coexistence of magnetism and superconductivity.

Notes: Abstract.  A direct observation of the grain-boundary phases for several well-characterized hot-pressed PbMo6S8 samples were made by Auger electron spectroscopy. The surface elemental concentrations are completely different when compared to its bulk composition. The thickness of this altered composition is in the range 100–200 AÅ gradually increasing with increase in hot-pressing temperature. Also, evidence of segregation of impurities, such as carbon and SiO x , to the grain-boundaries were noticed for some of the samples. Calorimetric experiments show a continuous broadening and a reduction in amplitude of the specific heat anomaly at T C. This in terms of superconducting volume fraction indicates a T C distribution in the range 9–15 K. Such an observation can be related to the local inhomogeneities with respect to the ternary composition, i.e., a deviation from ideal stoichiometry, PbMo6S8. The results are discussed in conjunction with X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope, and energy dispersive X-ray analysis. By considering the grain-boundary phases and the calorimetric observation of inhomogeneities, a plausible explanation is given for the low critical current densities in these materials.

Notes: Abstract With the overall critical current density,J c , remaining low for PbMo6S8, the addition of 0.3 at. % Sn noticcably improved the performance. The enhancement occurs despite the presence of excess Pb and a slightly suppressedT c . The increase inJ c can be attributed to a better homogeneity with respect to the chemical composition of the samples, which may be as a consequence of Sn substitution in the lattice. Detailed calorimetric investigation of undoped PbMo6S8 showed aT c distribution down to 9 K evidenced by a smearing ofT c . This may be due to a progressive degradation of the sample quality leading to a plausible off-stoichiometry. High-resolution Auger electron spectroscopic experiments suggest a variation in composition indicating excellent correspondence with the specific heat data. However, no such deviation was detected for the Sn-doped samples and therefore the observed raise inJ c . The results are discussed in conjunction with oxygen, lead and tin incorporated PbMo6S8.

Notes: Abstract The electron field emission from a metal covered with a thin layer of a semiconductor with electron affinity χ and dielectric constant ɛ is considered. The model takes into account the metal-semiconductor (Schottky) barrier of height ϕb, the conduction current inside the semiconductor, and the band bending at the semiconductor-vacuum interface due to the external field penetration. For thick films under moderately high electric fields, the metal-semiconductor interface does not influence the emission behaviour whereas for thin films, the interface plays an important role, depending on the barrier heights. In particular, for χ/ϕb〈ε2/3 the I–V characteristics will, for strong fields, be dominated by the field emission process at the interface. In such cases important deviations from Fowler-Nordheim behaviour are found.

Notes: Abstract The superconducting transition temperatureT c of a two band superconductor in the presence of magnetic and nonmagnetic impurities as well as exchange fields is calculated using a new (8 × 8)-matrix formalism for the electron Green's function. In particular we investigate the influence of spin correlations onT c near a magnetic phase transition. It is shown that in the strong interband phonon coupling limit the system behaves essentially as a one band superconductor. In the weak coupling limit we find typical deviations from one band theories.

Notes: Abstract: The role of Nd/Ba disorder on the superconducting properties of Nd1+xBa2-xCu3O 7 - δ epitaxial thin films has been systematically studied. The temperature dependence of the ab-plane penetration depth of highly c-axis epitaxial samples having different Nd/Ba composition has been measured by an inverted microstrip resonator technique. Stoichiometric films (x = 0) exhibit a linear penetration depth at low temperature, while Nd-rich films (0 〈 x 〈 0.3) show a T2 law. We find that for low Nd excess it is possible to obtain a reasonable fit of the data in the full temperature range using the d-wave picture, with the assumption that Nd at Ba site plays the role of unitary scattering center. At high concentration, the low temperature data can be instead explained supposing that excess Nd acts as impurity with intermediate strength. The dependence of the critical temperature and of the zero temperature superfluid density on disorder have been also studied. It is found that these two quantities are correlated in a way analogous to what reported for YBCO films and single crystals having Zn, Ni impurities at Cu site. An attempt to explain the results using a s-wave approach, as in the two-gap model, is able to reproduce the data but gives results quantitatively conflicting. On the contrary a self-consistent picture within a d-wave framework can be obtained taking into account the effect of localization and suppression of the order parameter at impurity sites in the case of both low and high impurity content.
