Notes: Abstract A suite of muscarinic receptor blockers was used to characterize the receptor(s) mediating the contractile effect of acetylcholine (ACh) on isolated rings of ventral aorta from the dogfish shark, Squalus acanthias. The M2/M4-specific inhibitor N,N’-bis(6-{[(2-methoxyphenyl) methyl] amino} hexyl) -1,8- octane diamine tetrahydrochloride (methoctramine) did not reduce the efficacy of ACh, and the M3-specific inhibitor 4-diphenylacetoxy-N-methylpiperidine methiodide (4-DAMP) displaced the ACh concentration-response curve to the right at much lower concentrations than the M1-specific inhibitor (5-11-dihydro-11- [4-methyl-l-piperazinyl)acetyl] -6H-pyrido[2,3-b] [1,4] benzodiazepin-6-one dihydrochloride) (pirenzepine). It appears, therefore, that an M3-type muscarinic receptor is expressed in the aortic vascular smooth muscle of the dogfish shark.

Notes: Summary The efflux of sodium ions from the loggerhead turtle,Caretta caretta, was investigated when animals were acclimated to seawater, freshwater, and during the acclimation period after transfer from seawater to freshwater. The rate of sodium loss in animals acclimated to seawater was found to be 3 μM Na · g−1 · hr−1. Cannulation of the cloaca showed that only 5% of the gross efflux of sodium was via the cloaca and it was calculated that 60% of the gross efflux was via nasal gland secretion and 35 % via integumentary diffusional loss. Cannulation experiments indicated that a significant amount of sodium may enter the body via the cloaca. Transfer of animals from seawater to freshwater resulted in a decline of sodium efflux by 90–99 % within 6 hr, and a further decline to only approximately 0 01 μM Na · g−1· hr−1 after 1–2 days in freshwater. Cannulation experiments of individuals acclimated to freshwater indicated that the role of the cloaca in sodium loss in freshwater was minimal. It was calculated that sodium loss in freshwater is so small that survival in freshwater for at least 20 days is possible without active extraction of sodium from the medium. No evidence could be found for active uptake of sodium ions from freshwater baths byCaretta.

Notes: Abstract  The products of the highly polymorphic and variable major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I loci play a crucial role in host defenses against infectious disease. While similar alleles have been found in closely related species, sharing of a functional MHC class I allele between two species has never been reported. Here we show that an identical functional MHC class I molecule is present in two different primate species with an approximate divergence time of 0.7 million years. Lymphocytes from the red-crested tamarin (Saguinus geoffroyi) expressed an MHC class I allele (Sage-G * 01) that was identical in coding sequence to an MHC class I allele (Saoe-G * 08) found in the cotton-top tamarin (Saguinus oedipus). Furthermore, influenza virus-specific cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs) generated in the cotton-top tamarin killed lymphocytes expressing the influenza virus nucleoprotein (NP) from the red-crested tamarin. Since the influenza virus NP epitope is bound by Saoe-G*08 in the cotton-top tamarin, it is likely that this molecule is functional in both species. These data provide the first evidence that functional MHC class I molecules can be maintained entirely intact in two separate species.

Notes: Abstract We investigate the state on theC*-algebra of Pauli spins on a one-dimensional lattice (infinitely extended in both directions) which gives rise to the thermodynamic limit of the Gibbs ensemble in the two-dimensional Ising model (with nearest neighbour interaction). It is shown that the representation of the Pauli spin algebra associated with the state is factorial above and at the known critical temperature, while it has a two-dimensional center below the critical temperature. As a technical tool, we derive a general criterion for a state of the Pauli spin algebra corresponding to a Fock state of the Fermion algebra to be primary. We also show that restrictions of two quasifree states of the Fermion algebra to its even part are equivalent if and only if the projection operatorsE 1 andE 2 (on the direct sum of two copies of the basic Hilbert space) satisfy the following two conditions: (1)E 1 −E 2 is in the Hilbert-Schmidt class, (2)E 1 ∧ (1 −E 2) has an even dimension, where the even-oddness of dimE 1 ∧ (1 −E 2) is called ℤ2-index ofE 1 andE 2 and is continuous inE 1 andE 2 relative to the norm topology.

Notes: Summary The definition of acceleration parameters for the convergence of a sparseLU factorization semi-direct method is shown to be based on lower and upper bounds of the extreme eigevalues of the iteration matrix. Optimum values of these parameters are established when the eigenvalues of the iteration matrix are either real or complex. Estimates for the computational work required to reduce theL 2 norm of the error by a specified factor ɛ are also given.

Notes: Abstract The solution of banded circulant systems based on structured factorisation is presented. The structured factorisation of banded circulant matrices is obtained by solving a set of non-linear equations. When the matrix is strictly diagonally dominant, the corresponding non-linear system can be solved by an iterative algorithm, e.g., a non-linear SOR or Newton's iteration. Both approaches are presented. The computational complexity of algorithms for computing the structured factorisation depends on the matrix bandwidth and not on its dimensions. A coupled system obtained by the factorisation is solved using a rank-annihilation formula. The structured approach is competitive to the deconvolution one based on the FFT. Moreover, in many practical applications where large matrices with narrow bandwidths occur the structured approach is the most efficient.

Notes: Abstract 1. In an Abelian group, a module, or more generally a one-based group H, the only definable groups are the obvious ones: if G is interpretable in H, then it has a definable subgroup of finite index which is definably isomorphic to a quotient A/B, where A and B are definable subgroups of a Cartesian power of H. 2. In such a group the introduction of those quotient groups weakly eliminates imaginary elements. More generally, for a stable theory the existence of canonical real bases for complete types implies the elimination of imaginary elements. 3. A group which is interpretable in a one-based structure is one-based. The property of being one-based is preserved by interpretation for theories of finite rank but not in general.
