Notes: Summary Cystic kidneys from the mutant CPK strain of C57BL/6J mice were cultured in serum-free organ culture. During 120 h of incubation in chemically-defined medium, CPK cystic tubular changes underwent complete regression. Environmental factors regulate the expression of genetically determined polycystic kidney disease in this model.

Notes: Abstract A Zürich-Montpellier analysis provided more detailed information about pelecypod associations in two sediment beds than either a traditional subjective approach or a cluster analysis based on Jaccard's coefficient. The Zürich-Montpellier test separated till and sand pelecypod associations, and indicated distinguishing species and atypical samples. Species distinguishing the till association were Cardita ventricosa, Yoldia myalis, Semele rubropicta, Venerupis kennerlyi, Clinocardium nuttallii, Nuculana minuta and Macoma incongrua. Species distinguishing the sand were Macoma elimata, Compsomyax subdiaphana, Yoldia ensifera, Macoma calcarea, M. lipara, M. brota, Yoldia limatula and Macoma alaskana. Two samples contained species from both associations plus some species rare elsewhere. Combined R-and Q-type grouping procedures, of which the Zürich-Montpellier approach is an example, are useful in evaluating benthic faunal similarities, but the suitability of various forms of the procedure needs further study.

Notes: Abstract We have performed atomic-level first principle electronic structure calculations on doped grain boundaries (GB) in SrTiO3. This was motivated by the electron holography experiments, which were able to quantify the electrostatic potential and the associated space charge distribution across the Mn-doped GB in this material. The embedded cluster Discrete Variational (DV)-Xα method was used to determine the charge and the densities of states for several idealized models of a single crystal and symmetrical tilt grain boundaries in SrTiO3. Special attention was given to the role of Mn+2 and Mn+3 acceptors substituting for Ti+4 resulting in charge segregation across the grain boundaries, which was shown in the electron holography experiments. We have found that Mn replacing Ti prefers to have valence charge around +2 and this picture agrees with the experimental observation of negative grain boundary charges in the GB core.

Notes: Abstract The MOCVD growth of cadmium sulphide from dimethyl cadmium and ditertiarybutyl sulphide on indium tin oxide (ITO) coated glass is optimized in this work. Optimum transmission characteristics and grain size are observed for films grown at 290 °C at VI/II ratios of 1–1.5. This was related to the identification of a nucleation delay during in situ growth monitoring via laser interferometry. The nucleation delay is noted to vary with temperature and also VI/II ratio, allowing the rationalization of the resulting film quality in terms of this observation. Structural analysis indicates polycrystalline CdS of hexagonal phase of (1 0 0) preferred orientation. © 1998 Kluwer Academic Publishers

Notes: Abstract We have examined the effect of exposing isolated rat ventricular myocytes to lithium while measuring cytosolic free magnesium ([Mg2+]i) and calcium ([Ca2+]i) levels with the fluorescent, ion sensitive probes mag-fura-2 and fura-2. There was a significant rise in [Mg2+]i after a 5 min exposure to a solution in which 50% of the sodium had been replaced by Li+, but not when the sodium had been replaced by bis-dimethylammonium (BDA). However, there were significant increases in [Ca2+]i when either Na+ substitute was used. The possibility that Li+, which enters the cells, interferes with the signal from mag-fura-2 was eliminated as Li+ concentrations up to 10 mM had no effect on the dye's fluorescence signal. A possible explanation for these findings is that Li+ displaces Mg2+ from intracellular binding sites. Having considered the binding constants for Mg2+ and Li+ to ATP, we conclude that Li+ can displace Mg2+ from Mg-ATP, thus causing a rise in [Mg2+]i. This work has implications for other studies where Li+ is used as a Na+ substitute.

Notes: For the full scale implementation of in situ anaerobic bioremediation of tetrachloroethene (PCE) in groundwater, the following issues must be addressed: which organic substrates at which concentration would be most effective in promoting dechlorination and are economical; how far the substrate, electron acceptor, and nutrients can be transported in the aquifer; and the placement of delivery and recovery wells for distributing these amendments. In a microcosm study, almost all of the tested inexpensive substrates supported reductive dechlorination of PCE through vinyl chloride (VC) under methanogenic conditions. A minimum of about 60 mg L−1 of organic carbon was needed to dechlorinate 23 μM PCE with a single feeding. In a second microcosm study dechlorination stopped at 1,2-dichloroethene (DCE) in microcosms fed higher concentrations of several substrates. At the highest concentrations the substrates inhibited DCE production. Three field tracer tests were conducted to evaluate methods to distribute the amendments across the aquifer. The natural groundwater gradient is not sufficient to distribute substrate evenly. Groundwater injection at 60 times the natural flux rate increased the distribution of substrate. A mixing strategy of cross-gradient injection further increased the distribution of the substrate. Ammonia-nitrogen, sulfate, and phosphate were retarded relative to the substrate and inorganic tracer.

Notes: Abstract The pre-Cambrian granulites of Enderby Land Antarctica, contain coexisting spinel-quartz, sapphirine-quartz, hypersthene-sillimanite-quartz and osumilite on a regional extent. Osumilite is present in a variety of mineral assemblages, most of which are documented in granulites for the first time. The mineral assemblages, reactions and compositional zoning in minerals are discussed in terms of continuous and discontinuous reactions in response to changing conditions of metamorphism. The development of many of the mineral coronas can be explained by continuous rather than discontinuous reactions, due to the effects of Mg-Fe and (Mg,Fe)-2Al exchange equilibria with decreasing temperature. The highest P-T conditions of metamorphism (8–10 kb, 900 °–980 ° C, Ellis, in preparation) were beyond the stability limit of coexisting garnet-cordierite. Secondary cordierite has developed through a large number of mineral reactions in response to cooling of these granulites. A theoretical analysis of the phase relations involving osumilite in the chemical systems K2O-MgO-Al2O3-SiO2 and K2O-MgO-FeO-Al2O3-SiO2 is presented. In the pure Mg-system the lower temperature stability limit of Mg-osumilite is inferred to be defined with increasing pressure by the reactions Os→Cd+En+Kfeld+Qtz, Os→Sa+En+Kfeld+Qtz, Os→Sill+En+Kfeld+Qtz. In iron-bearing systems an important reaction involving osumilite is Os+Gt→Cd+Hy+Kfeld+Qtz. At moderate temperatures and pressures, osumilite is limited to rocks which lie on the Mg-rich side of the Cd-Hy stable tie line on an AFM diagram. At higher pressures and temperatures osumilite occurs in a widerrange of rock compositions because of the stability of coexisting garnet and osumilite. Petrographic data, as well as chemographic relations indicate that for many common rock compositions, garnet, cordierite, hypersthene, sapphirine and sillimanite cannot coexist with both osumilite and K-feldspar.

Notes: Abstract The molecular characteristics of markers in the chromosome region surrounding the supernodulation gene (nts-1) of soybean (Glycine max L. Merr.) were investigated in 187 F2 plants from a cross of G. max cv. Bragg (nts) and G. soja PI468.397 (wild-type nodulation). RFLP marker pUTG-132a, linked tightly (0.7±0.5 cM) to nts-1, was converted to a PCR marker. The polymorphism resides within a 1.72 kb PstI fragment and consists of an 832 bp insertion in G. max relative to the wild progenitor G. soja. The insertion is flanked by a 35 bp direct duplication that was found only once in G. soja. Data suggest that the pUTG-132a sequence exists only once in the genome, which is compatible with the recessive nature of nts-1. Accordingly, pUTG-132a is a valuable marker for map-based cloning. Another RFLP marker, pA-381, was mapped 4.8 cM distal to nts-1. Marker order, established by Maximum Likelihood Analysis, placed nts-1 between pUTG-132a and pA-381. To generate additional molecular markers, a segregating F2 population was analysed using bulked segregant analysis (BSA) and single oligonucleotide primer-based PCR (DNA amplification fingerprinting; DAF). PCR marker pcr5-4L was mapped to soybean linkage group H and sequenced. The data revealed (i) recombination events and marker order in the nts-1 region; (ii) the molecular nature and cause of polymorphisms in linked molecular markers; (iii) a low density of polymorphisms around nts-1, and (iv) diploidy of the distal region of linkage group H of soybean.
