Abstract Data are cited on the effect of ionizing radiations on the chemical stability of vitreous materials intended for radioactive waste disposal. It is shown that exposure in air leads to a change in the chemical composition of the surface of specimens as a result of heterogeneous radiation-chemical reactions involving the solid preparations and components of the air. Suggested reaction products are carbonates, hydroxides, and nitrates.
