Notes: Summary The zonally asymmetric stationary component of the general circulation is studied for small Rossby number without the beta-plane approximation. The equations for this component are linearized about a mean flow. An analytic solution for the meridional wind is found when the zonal wind and static stability of the mean flow are independent of the vertical coordinate. The solution is used to compute the transports of angular momentum and heat. The angular momentum transports give rise to a net convergence of the order of Rossby number and are balanced by the zonal mean Coriolis torque. However, the heat transports vanish at this order of magnitude.

Notes: Abstract Lisdoonvarna is a small town with a resident population of ca. 700, which is seasonally increased several-fold by tourists. It is located in the northwest of County Clare, western Ireland about 10 km from the Atlantic seaboard and adjacent to the karstic Burren plateau. Lisdoonvarna has two claims to fame: it is the only currently operative spa in Ireland, and it is the center for a long-established match-making festival held each September (postharvest) at which bachelor farmers are found partners by skilled match-makers. These two features of Lisdoonvarna are not wholly unconnected even though the September festival now attracts many young people from outside of the area who may not patronize the spa waters.

Notes: Abstract  The Burren plateau of County Clare is a classic example of a plateau karst characterised by patchy, thin soils, a lack of defined surface drainage, and in the instance of the Burren, a rich floristic, archaeological and landscape heritage. Since accession to the European Union and, in particular, as a result of Common Agricultural Policy initiatives, attempts have been made to raise farm incomes and to modernise agriculture in areas such as the Burren. Due to the encouragement of land reclamation and silage production has largely replaced hay farming for winter fodder. These changes pose a threat to groundwater quality by enhancing the leaching of artificial fertilizers or of organic pollutants. The Burren is highly vulnerable to water pollution from silage effluent because of its thin or absent soils and its highly karstified aquifers. A full survey of silage clamps was made in the summers of 1991 and 1992. For each site data were collected to derive the following: mass of silage, effluent produced, hazard rating of site to groundwater, likely discharge of effluent to groundwater and groundwater dilution index. About 60% of clamps were considered to be high risk and 23% medium risk. About 92% of all sites probably allow some effluent to infiltrate groundwater.

Notes: Summary Aminoglycoside pharmacokinetics were determined in 30 normal weight patients and 30 morbidly obese patients (〉90% overweight). All had normal renal function and a gram-negative infection (documented by cultures, fever and elevated white blood cell counts) which was treated only with aminoglycoside antibiotics. The normal weight and morbidly obese patients were matched with respect to the following criterion: age, sex, ideal body weight (IBW), serum creatinine, site of infection, and type of aminoglycoside antibiotic (gentamicin, tobramycin, or amikacin). The results were similar for all 3 drugs. Average half-life was 2 h for both the morbidly obese and normal weight patients. The mean volumes of distribution and clearances were significantly larger in the morbidly obese (23.31 and 135.8 ml/min for gentamicin, 29.01 and 162.4 ml/min for tobramycin, and 26.81 and 157.3 ml/min for amikacin) than in normal weight patients (17.01 and 95.9 ml/min for gentamicin, 18.31 and 101.3 ml/min for tobramycin, and 18.61 and 99.2 ml/min for amikacin). As a result of altered aminoglycoside pharmacokinetics, morbidly obese patients required significantly larger mean doses (540 mg/d for gentamicin, 690 mg/d for tobramycin and 1970 mg/d for amikacin) when compared to the normal weight patients (380 mg/d, 420 mg/d and 1420 mg/d, respectively; p〈0.005) in order to achieve comparable serum concentrations.

Notes: Summary The effects of cimetidine (1 g/day) on theophylline disposition and metabolism were examined in smokers and non-smokers for single dose intravenous and chronic oral administration of theophylline. In the intravenous study the effect of cimetidine on plasma theophylline clearance was more marked in smokers (22.7% reduction) than in non-smokers (12.2% reduction). Similarly, in the multiple dose study the effect of cimetidine on theophylline clearance was greater in smokers (28.3% decrease) than in non-smokers (11.3% decrease). The reduction in clearance was largely due to a reduction in metabolic clearances by 3-demethylation (Cl3DM) and 1-demethylation (Cl1DM) with no significant effect on clearance by 8-oxidation (Cl80X). There was a strong correlation between Cl3DM and Cl1DM (r=0.98, p〈0.001) in both control and cimetidine study phases, whereas other correlations between partial clearances were less marked and were not apparent during the cimetidine phase. The results are consistent with the view that 1- and 3-demethylation of theophylline are carried out by a common form of cytochrome P-450 which is selectively induced by cigarette smoking and preferentially inhibited by cimetidine.

Notes: Abstract The integration of heterogeneous database environments is a difficult and complex task. The A la carte Framework addresses this complexity by providing a reusable and extensible architecture in which a set of heterogeneous database management systems can be integrated. The goal is to support incremental integration of existing database facilities into heterogeneous, interoperative, distributed systems. The Framework addresses the three main issues in heterogeneous systems in tegration. First, it identifies the problems in integrating heterogeneous systems. Second, it identifies the key interfaces and parameters required for autonomous systems to interoperate correctly. Third, it demonstrates an approach to integrating these interfaces in an extensible and incremental way. The A la carte Framework provides a set of reusable, integrating components which integrate the major functional domains, such as transaction management, that could or should be integrated in heterogeneous systems. It also provides a mechanism for capturing key characteristics of the components and constraints which describe how the components can be mixed and interchanged, thereby helping to reduce the complexity of the integration process. Using this framework, we have implemented an experimental, heterogeneous configuration as part of the object management work in the software engineering research consortium, Arcadia.

Notes: Summary Two different methods have been used to simulate the structures of three-dimensional polymeric systems and tested on silica sodalite SiO, and nine metal oxides (VO, VO2 (rutile and distorted rutile), V2O3 (corundum), TiO, TiO2 (rutile), TiO, (anatase), β-PbO2 and NiNb2O6). The first method uses traditional molecular mechanics. The structure is considered to be covalent and a large fragment is built consisting of ca. 500 atoms. Force-field parameters are then derived to reproduce the structure as accurately as possible. The edge atoms are fixed during the simulation. The second method employs the ionic structure model, where no bonds are included. Periodic boundary conditions are used and the Ewald summation is employed to calculate Coulombic energy. Van der Waals parameters are optimised to reproduce the crystal structure. Results show that the ionic structure model is more successful for oxides with distorted or irregular bonding. However, simple regular structures are modelled equally well by both methods.
