Summary The free volume, a mass independent physical parameter for pure and mixed mobile phases, has been calculated for mixtures composed of carbon dioxide and methanol using a thermodynamic equation of state. These calculated data have then been used for a correlation to the measured thermodynamic parameter in chromatography, the capacity ratio. Three effects of mobile phase modifiers in SFC have been discussed. An analysis of some experimental capacity ratio data shows that the free volume is a valuable parameter for the comparison of composition programming and pressure programming in SFC on a uniform basis. Finally the correlation found is used for a description of a simple application of composition programming with carbon dioxide and methanol to an oligostyrene separation.
