Notes: Abstract Samples of the system LiNbO3-Fe2O3 prepared by water quenching and by the double-roller quenching method in the range up to 24 mol% Fe2O3 were investigated by Mössbauer and ESR spectroscopy. In the water quenched samples up to 11 mol% Fe2O3 only the Fe3+ and the Fe2+ valence states could be detected. The Fe2+ concentration decreased with increasing Fe2O3 content. Above 11 mol% Fe2O3 magnetically split Mössbauer spectra indicated the presence of Fe2O3 clusters. The isomer shift values of Fe3+ as a function of Fe2O3 concentration showed jumps at 6 and 11 mol% Fe2O3, whereas no significant changes could be detected in the quadrupole splitting values. The ESR data already exhibited the existence of isolated Fe3+ ions and of clusters with Fe-Fe distances less than 8 Å for the lowest Fe2O3 concentration. The cluster signal intensity increased with increasing Fe2O3 content. The roller quenched samples showed increased Fe2+ concentration as compared to the water quenched samples, which suggests that slow quenching results in iron oxidation and cluster formation. For low Fe2O3 concentrations a valence state change Fe3+⇄Fe2+ can easily be obtained by heat treatments in various atmospheres, whereas for higher Fe2O3 contents (9.8 mol%) precipitations ofα-Fe (in reducing atmosphere) and Fe2O3 (in air) could be observed in addition to the valence state changes of a remaining part of dissolved Fe ions. On the basis of the obtained results a model was suggested for the unusual behaviour of the lattice parameters observed in LiNbO3-Fe2O3.

Notes: Abstract The positron lifetimes and relative intensities were measured in highly purified liquid and solid hydrocarbons. It was found that most of the lifetime parameters changed at the melting point of the samples and their values were lower in the solid than in the liquid phase. A study of hexane isomers was also performed.

Notes: Abstract Positron lifetime measurements were made on Ca2+ doped NaCl, Ba2+ doped NaCl and X-ray- and additively-coloured KCl crystals. In the NaCl(Ca) system a correlation which could be approximated by a power equation was found between the dopant concentration and the positron annihilation parameters. In the NaCl(Ba) system the decay parameters do not change significantly as expected and no significant difference in the decay parameters of the coloured and uncoloured crystals could be found.

Abstract: Zusammenfassung Ein unter Nicht-Gleichgewichtsverhältnissen gefrorenes System aus H2O-FeCl2 bzw.
Notes: Abstract In the H2O-FeCl2 and H2O-Fe(ClO4)2 systems frozen under non-equilibrium conditions the nearly eutectic solution is supercooled, and then solidifies in a glassy form. The temperatures of the glass-to-supercooled liquid transition and of the crystallization of the quasi-eutectics, as well as some points of the solidus and liquidus curves were measured by the DTA method. The results are in good agreement with the changes in the Mössbauer spectra of these solutions.

Notes: Abstract Phase transitions of pure water and aqueous Fe(II) perchlorate solutions, frozen between 1 and 5 kbar were detected by the DTA method at atmospheric pressure. Only the crystal structure of the primarily formed ice varies with the pressure, while water molecules remaining in the near eutectic solution — which solidifies into a glassy state — show no sensitivity towards pressure.

Notes: Abstract It is inferred from the thermoanalytical data obtained on 0.2–4.0M solutions of Fe(ClO4)2 which are frozen under non-equilibrium conditions that the phase containing the solute ions turns into a glassy state below −95°. On the warming of these solutions exothermic and endothermic processes are observed which can be related to the effects observed by the nuclear gamma resonance method.
