    Notes: Abstract Measurements of the anomalous cosmic ray (ACR) isotopic composition have been made in three regions of the magnetosphere accessible from the polar Earth orbit of SAMPEX, including the interplanetary medium at high latitudes and geomagnetically trapped ACRs. At those latitudes where ACRs can penetrate the Earth's magnetic field while fully stripped galactic cosmic rays (GCRs) of similar energies are excluded, a pure ACR sample is observed to have the following composition: 15N/N 〈 0.023, 18O/16O 〈 0.0034, and 22Ne/20Ne = 0.077(+0.085, −0.023). We compare our values with those found by previous investigators and with those measured in other samples of solar and galactic material. In particular, a comparison of 22Ne/20Ne measurements from various sources implies that GCRs are not simply an accelerated sample of the local interstellar medium.

    Notes: Summary: The oscillatory behavior of paper wasps, Polistes fuscatus, was examined in field observations (401.9 h) of 37 preworker (pre-emergence), multiple-foundress colonies. Additional field observations were conducted on 16 multiple-foundress colonies (96 h) both before and after worker emergence, and on 10 preworker colonies (40 h) before and after eggs had hatched into larvae. In addition, we observed 18 preworker, multiple-foundress colonies: six undisturbed controls (12 h), six larvae removed (12 h), and six larvae removed and replaced (12 h). Finally, we analysed video and audio sequences of oscillatory behaviors (lateral vibrations).¶ Higher ranked foundresses performed lateral vibrations (LVs) at a significantly greater rate than lower ranked foundresses. However, there was no significant association between rates of LVs and (1) aggression or (2) magnitude of differences in dominance indices among cofoundresses. There was also no significant temporal association between LVs and departures or returns. Lateral vibrations were commonly performed by foundresses that were alone on the nest. These results and others indicate that LVs do not function in adult-adult communication. ¶Lateral vibrations were significantly, temporally associated with high activity level, primarily cell inspection. Lateral vibrations were significantly, positively correlated with abdominal wagging and antennal drumming, both of which have been implicated in adult-larval communication. Foundresses of colonies containing eggs only (compared to colonies containing eggs and larvae) rarely displayed LVs. Removal of larvae significantly reduced the rates of LVs and the replacement of removed larvae caused a marked increase in the rates of LVs. Video analyses revealed that larvae retracted their head capsules in response to an LV. All of these data indicate that LVs involve adult-larval communication via substrate vibrations. Some indirect evidence suggests that LVs signal larvae to stop secreting saliva to adult wasps.

    Notes: Summary Regeneration in hydra is considered to be morphallactic because it can occur in the absence of cell division. Whether DNA synthesis is required for regeneration or other repatterning events is not known. The question was investigated by blocking DNA synthesis with hydroxyurea and examining several developmental processes. Head regeneration, reversal of regeneration polarity and battery cell differentiation all took place in the absence of DNA synthesis. Hence, morphallactic regulation in hydra is independent of both DNA synthesis and mitosis.

    Notes: Abstract The tellinid bivalveMacomona liliana (Iredale) occurs at relatively low densities on a sandbank (Te Tau bank) in Manukau Harbour, New Zealand. Te Tau bank is dominated by polychaetes, including the tube-building spionidBoccardia syrtis (Rainer). JuvenileM. liliana are known to disperse as post-settlement juveniles by byssus-drifting. Laboratory experiments were conducted to assess whether the low abundance ofM. liliana on Te Tau bank was due to the presence ofB. syrtis, or to some reaction to the sediment itself. In particular, we, examined how juvenileM. liliana survived after exposure to Te Tau bank sediments with and without the spionid tube-mat for 1 mo in still-water conditions, and how they responded when given a choice of different sediment/tube-mat treatments in moving water. JuvenileM. liliana did not appear to have a strong aversion to settling and burrowing in sediments from Te Tau bank. Sediments without the tube-mat did not adversely affect the survivorship of the bivalves, but survival was significantly lower amongst theB. syrtis tube-mat. In the presence of a current, the juvenile bivalves settled in Te Tau bank sediments without a tube-mat, but avoided settling amongst liveB. syrtis. An artificial tube-mat enhanced settlement. Avoidance of liveB. syrtis appears to be an avoidance of the worms themselves rather than a response to the physical presence of their tubes.

    Notes: Summary DNA sequence analysis and the localization of the 5′ and 3′ termini by S1 mapping have shown that the mitochondrial (mt) small subunit rRNA coding region fromPodospora anserina is 1980 bp in length. The analogous coding region for mt rRNA is 1962 bp in maize, 1686 bp inSaccharomyces cerevisiae, and 956 bp in mammals, whereas its counterpart inEscherichia coli is 1542 bp. TheP. anserina mt 16S-like rRNA is 400 bases longer than that fromE. coli, but can be folded into a similar secondary structure. The additional bases appear to be clustered at specific locations, including extensions at the 5′ and 3′ termini. Comparison with secondary structure diagrams of 16S-like RNAs from several organisms allowed us to specify highly conserved and variable regions of this gene. Phylogenetic tree construction indicated that this gene is grouped with other mitochondrial genes, but most closely, as expected, with the fungal mitochondrial genes.

    Notes: Summary DNA sequence analysis has shown that the gene coding for the mitochondrial (mt) large subunit ribosomal RNA (rRNA) fromPodospora anserina is interrupted by two class I introns. The coding region for the large subunit rRNA itself is 3715 bp and the two introns are 1544 (r1) and 2404 (r2) bp in length. Secondary structure models for the large subunit rRNA were constructed and compared with the equivalent structure fromEscherichia coli 23S rRNA. The two structures were remarkably similar despite an 800-base difference in length. The additional bases in theP. anserina rRNA appear to be mostly in unstructured regions in the 3′ part of the RNA. Secondary structure models for the two introns show striking similarities with each other as well as with the intron models from the equivalent introns inSaccharomyces cerevisiae, Neurospora crassa, andAspergillus nidulans. The long open reading frames in each intron are different from each other, however, and the nucleotide sequence similarity diverges as it proceeds away from the core structure. Each intron is located within regions of the large subunit rRNA gene that are highly conserved in both sequence and structure. Computer analysis showed that the open reading frame for intron r1 contained a common maturase-like polypeptide. The open reading frames of intron r2 apeared to be chimeric, displaying high sequence similarity with the open reading frames in the r1 and ATPase 6 introns ofN. crassa.

    Notes: Summary To evaluate the requirement of vascular and/or neurotrophic-derived factors on determination and differentiation of chondrogenic and osteogenic phenotypes, early embryonic quail and mouse mandibular processes were cultured using a modified Trowell method in a serumless, chemically-defined medium for 10 days. Quail HH stage 22 and mouse Theiler stage 16 mandibular processes formed cartilage and produced osteoid under these experimental conditions. Chondrogenic and osteogenic phenotypes were expressed without serum or other exogenous growth-promoting influences.
