    Notes: Abstract A study of NADH ferricyanide reductase activity in oriented vesicles or open ghosts of human and porcine erythrocytes shows that the dehydrogenase activity can have three types of orientation in the membrane. There is activity which responds only to acceptors and NADH exclusively on the inside face, or exclusively on the outer surface. There is also activity which requires exposure of both sides of the membrane and thus is transmembranous. The transmembrane activity is inhibited by insulin, whereas the internal and external enzymes do not respond to insulin. The transmembrane dehydrogenase can be a basis for proton transport in the plasma membrane.

    Notes: Abstract Observations from the Nimbus 6 pressure modulator radiometer (PMR) have been used to estimate monthly mean planetary wave fluxes of heat and momentum in the stratosphere and mesosphere. While the eddy heat fluxes play an important role in the mean meridional circulation of the winter stratosphere they are shown to be less important in the upper mesosphere. Incorporation of the observed momentum fluxes into the Oxford two-dimensional circulation model has shown that they are incapable of providing the momentum transport necessary to balance the zonal flow accelerations induced by the mean meridional motion. Other unspecified transfer processes represented by Rayleigh frictional damping of the zonal fow are shown to dominate. In contrast the observed fluxes in the stratosphere achieve the necessary redistribution of momentum. Moreover their interannual variability profoundly influences the stratospheric circulation, as demonstrated in the model by the use of two different annual sets of observed momentum fluxes. The desirability of calculating the planetary wave behaviour within the model is indicated.

    Notes: Abstract  The high thermal gradient and heat flow 〉1000 mW m-2 on Håkon Mosby Mud Volcano are ascribed to rapid transport of pore water, mud, and gas in a narrow, deep conduit within a 3.1-km-thick glacial sediment unit. The instability is caused by rapid loading of dense glacial sediments on less dense oozes. Changes in pressure–temperature conditions by sudden, large-scale downslope mass movement may induce structural deformation, opening transient pathways from the base of the glacial sediments to the sea floor. This model may also explain slope maxima elsewhere on the margin.

    Notes: Summary We have previously identified a mutation in the gene for methylmalonyl CoA mutase in a patient with the mut- phenotype of methylmalonic aciduria. This mutation (G717V) interferes with the binding of the deoxyadenosylcobalamin cofactor to the apoenzyme producing a mutant holoenzyme that is defective, but not completely inactive, in vitro. This report describes the clinical phenotype associated with this mutation in the original patient and two additional patients who are homozygous for this allele. All three patients presented in the first years of life with multiple episodes of life-threatening organic acidosis and hyperammonemia. None had evidence of disease in the perinatal period, and all three have low-normal intelligence. These three children exhibit a distinctive phenotype of disease that is intermediate between the fulminant and benign forms of methylmalonic aciduria. These data suggest that this phenotype is the specific consequence of the G717V mutation, and that the degree of residual enzyme activity associated with the G717V mutation is close to the threshold required in vivo for maintaining metabolic homeostasis.

    Notes: Abstract. In this study we have mapped newly identified rDNA loci in Gossypium hirsutum. Four new minor 18S-26S rDNA loci, in addition to the sites previously identified, were mapped using fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) to heterozygous translocation (NT) quadrivalents (IVs). The newly detected 18S-26S rDNA loci were mapped to the right arms of chromosomes 8, 9, 15, 17, 19, 20, and 23 and the left arms of chromosomes 5, 11, 12, and 14. Using the rDNA loci as common reference points, we detected several erroneous arm assignments in the previously published map of NT breakpoints. The data are summarized in the form of an integrated map for all 17 known rDNA loci, relative to centromeres, telomeres, and NT breakpoints. This information will facilitate future locus-specific research on rRNA gene evolution and function.

    Notes: Summary The effects of the ingestion of food and digoxin on the cardiovascular system alone and in combination have been observed in eight healthy subjects. A positive inotropic response was seen following food (2.5 MJ) and intravenous digoxin (0.01 mg/kg) with significant decreases in QS2Index (QS2I) pre-ejection period (PEP) and PEP/LVET (LVET — left ventricular ejection time). These responses were potentiated when food and digoxin were combined. Opposing effects of food and digoxin on % diastole (%D) and diastolic time were observed, food decreasing %D and DT while digoxin increased these variables. Both food and digoxin decreased T-wave amplitude, and digoxin alone or in combination with food decreased QTc. The positive inotropic effect of a 2.5 MJ mixed meal and a loading dose of digoxin in healthy subjects are of similar degree, different mechanism, and are potentiated in combination.

    Notes: Summary The hypokalaemic effects of equal doses (5 mg) of fenoterol, salbutamol, terbutaline and an equal volume of saline administered by nebulization were compared in eight healthy subjects. Plasma potassium was measured at 15-min intervals for 60 min and at 90 min, 2, 4 and 6 h following administration. Fenoterol, salbutamol and terbutaline all significantly decreased plasma potassium when compared to saline; however, the magnitude and duration of this effect differed between the active agents. Both fenoterol and terbutaline significantly reduced plasma potassium for 4 h whereas salbutamol was only different from 30 to 120 min. The maximum decrease occurred with fenoterol (−0.78 mmol/l), followed by terbutaline (−0.70 mmol/l) and salbutamol (−0.33 mmol/l). Both terbutaline and fenoterol had a significantly greater effect compared with salbutamol. When administered by nebulization fenoterol and terbutaline are likely to have a greater hypokalaemic effect then salbutamol and this effect is likely to be more long lasting.

    Notes: Summary We have investigated the cardiovascular and metabolic effects of multiple inhaled doses of salbutamol and hexoprenaline in 12 healthy volunteers. They inhaled 200 μg of salbutamol or hexoprenaline at 15 min intervals for 60 min from a metered dose inhaler (total dose 1000 μg). We measured heart rate, blood pressure, total electromechanical systole (as a measure of inotropic response), QTc interval on the ECG, and plasma potassium at baseline, 10 min after each inhalation, and 30 and 60 min after the last inhalation. There was no difference in the effects of the two drugs on blood pressure, total electromechanical systole, or QTc interval. Salbutamol significantly increased heart rate compared with hexoprenaline. Hexoprenaline caused a significantly greater fall in plasma potassium compared with salbutamol.

    Notes: Abstract The problem of bacterial pollution in shellfishing areas is not uncommon in the coastal regions of the United States. Bacterial contamination from man's activities can effectively reduce our natural shellfish resource areas by forcing their closure because of high potential risk of diseases being spread by shellfish harvested in these areas. Tillamook Bay, a relatively small, enclosed drainage basin of nonurban character, presents an excellent study area for observing this problem. The high population density of animals, raised on a relatively small floodplain area, represents one of the major sources of pollution in the bay. This paper summarizes the history of the agencies involved with the problem and presents the current approach to alleviate bacterial pollution in the bay without unduly penalizing other industries in the Tillamook basin. The paper also presents some of the legal aspects of reducing water pollution in shellfish harvesting areas and the jurisdiction of federal agencies in these matters. Finally, recommendations are given to reduce bacterial output by the major source categories in the basin, and criteria for bay closure to shellfish harvest are developed to protect the public from bacterially contaminated shellfish.
