Notes: Abstract The conformation of brain proteolipid apoprotein (PLA) has been investigated using infrared spectroscopy and freeze-fracture electron microscopy. For this purpose, spectroscopic samples consisting of a mixture of liquid paraffin and wet protein have been prepared. These systems have allowed us to record the infrared spectra of PLA at neutral pH. The amide I and III regions reveal the existence of a predominantly α-helical structure, as well as the presence of minor β-strands and random coil forms. The effect of sonication and a non-denaturing detergent, (n-octyl-β-d-glucopyranoside), on the structure of the protein have also been investigated. Sonication produces an increase of the β and unordered structures at the expense of the α-helical conformation. These structural changes are enhanced in the presence of the non-ionic detergent n-octyl-β-d-glucopyranoside. Lipids protect the native protein structure from the effects of sonication. The aforementioned detergent changes the PLA conformation by increasing the α-helical content at the expense of β-sheet and random coil forms. Therefore the PLA structure seems to be similar to the structures of other proteins intrinsic to non-neural membranes. The effects investigated also suggest that PLA behaves in a conformationally flexible manner.

Notes: Abstract Raman and infrared spectroscopy have been simultaneously applied, for the first time, to the study of myelin membranes and their proteolipid protein (PLP) so as to obtain information on the secondary structure of proteins and the ordering of lipid chains. The vibrational spectra were recorded at physiological pH using a non-denaturing detergent (n-octyl-β-d-glucopyranoside) in phosphate buffer. Neither the buffer nor the detergent interfere spectroscopically with the amide bands from proteins. The spectra reveal that the predominant secondary structure in the polypeptide backbone in myelin is the helix. The proteolipid protein was found to be more disordered than the polypeptide arrangement of the myelin membrane, as deduced from the relative intensities and halfwidths of characteristic infrared amide I bands. β-form and turns are also present, the amount of these structures being higher in PLP. The study of the Raman spectra of vC-C and vC-H regions made it possible to obtain information on the lipid chain order.

Notes: Abstract EPR and magnetic susceptibility investigations on the $$x{\text{V}}_{\text{2}} {\text{O}}_{\text{5}} \cdot {\text{(100}} - {\text{x)[2P}}_{\text{2}} {\text{O}}_{\text{5}} \cdot {\text{PbO]}}$$ glass system with 0〈x≤50 mol % were performed. The covalence degree of vanadium bonds was evaluated according to the LC AO-MO model. The changes observed in the EPR spectra with increasing V4+ ion content are explained using a simulation program on the assumption of the superposition of two signals, one with hyperfine structure (hfs) typical for isolated ions and another one consisting of a broad line without hfs characteristic for clustered ions. The hfs is not shown for x〈3mol%V2O5. The EPR data show the presence of V4+ ions in a square-pyramidal co-ordination (C4V) for 3≤x≤20mol%V2O5. The progressive disappearance of hfs for high V2O5 content (〉20 mol %) suggests the increase of the associated ion number coupled by superexchange interactions. This result is consistent with magnetic susceptibility data for 〉3 mol % where the temperature dependence of magnetic susceptibility is described by the Curie–Weiss type law with a negative paramagnetic Curie temperature. The magnetic susceptibility results allowed the estimation of the V4+/V4+ + V5+ ratio in the sample studied.

Notes: Summary The efficiency of ion chromatography columns packed with styrene-divinylbenzene copolymer containing quaternary ammonium groups to preconcentrate phenols at μg l−1 levels has been established. Retention is carried out in acidic medium based on non-polar interactions between the column and phenols. Pure acetonitrile was used for one step elution. Enrichment factors of at least 100 times are achieved. Regeneration of the column can easily be accomplished with a mixture of 60 mM nitric acid: methanol (1∶99). Recoveries from a river water sample for nine priority pollutant phenols were in the range 92–105%. Other retained organic substances do not disturb liquid chromatographic determination of the phenols studied.

Notes: Abstract New complexes CuL2×2H2O, CoL2×3H2O, MnL2×2H2O and FeL3×2H2O, L=γ-L -glutamyl-5-(p-nitroanilide), were synthesized and characterized by their spectral, magnetic and thermal properties. The thermal stabilities of the synthesized complexes were examined in the temperature range 20–500°C. In all these complexes γ-L -glutamyl-5-(p -nitroanilide) acts as a bidentate ligand, its coordination involving the carbonyl oxygen and the nitrogen atom of the second amino group. The local structure around the Cu(II) ion is pseudotetrahedral. In the Co(II), Mn(II) and Fe(III) complexes, the metal ions are in the high-spin form, with octahedral stereochemistry.

Notes: Abstract Na+, K+-ATPase is ubiquitously expressed in the plasma membrane ofall animal cells where it serves as the principal regulator of intracellularion homeostasis. Na+, K+-ATPase is responsible for generating andmaintaining transmembrane ionic gradients that are of vital importance forcellular function and subservient activities such as volume regulation, pHmaintenance, and generation of action potentials and secondary activetransport. The diversity of Na+, K+-ATPase subunit isoforms andtheir complex spatial and temporal patterns of cellular expression suggestthat Na+, K+-ATPase isozymes perform specialized physiologicalfunctions. Recent studies have shown that the α subunit isoformspossess considerably different kinetic properties and modes of regulationand the β subunit isoforms modulate the activity, expression and plasmamembrane targeting of Na+, K+-ATPase isozymes. This review focuseson recent developments in Na+, K+-ATPase research, and in particular reportsof expression of isoforms in various tissues and experiments aimed atelucidating the intrinsic structural features of isoforms important forNa+, K+-ATPase function.

Notes: Abstract Using Mössbauer spectroscopy the quinolinates of iron/II/ and iron/III/ have been studied. In iron/II/ quinolinate three sublattices were evidenced, two of them being attributed to Fe2+ ions and the third to Fe3+ impurities. In the iron/III/ quinolinate five structural sublattices were found, two of them containing Fe3+ ions, the other two Fe2+ ions and the fifth may be attributed to the interstitial Fe3+ ions.

Notes: Abstract Electron spin resonance spectroscopy was used to investigate the radiation damage in a powder of 2-acetoxybenzoic acid (Aspirin). Three types of radicals occur by γ-irradiation of Aspirin at room temperature. Two of them are the result of hydrogen abstraction while the third is produced by hydrogen addition at one of the carbon atoms of the ring. The relative yielding of the free radicals as a function of absorbed dose in the range of 2.4 kGy to 160 kGy is also discussed.
