Notes: Summary A random distribution of the Y-chromosome at somatic metaphase was found in 50 patients with Ph' positive chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML). Thus, it is concluded that the ‘positive’ of the Y-chromosome at somatic metaphase does not appear to influence the loss from bone marrow cells.

Notes: Abstract The Tyndrum Pb+Zn veins, hosted by late Proterozoic quartzites, were probably generated in the Tournaisian (360 Ma). By determination of sulphur isotopic ratios of vein minerals three aspects of the Tyndrum mineralization were addressed, (i) sulphate sulphur sources; (ii) reduced sulphur source; (iii) isotopic equilibrium in the vein system including geothermometry. Twelve galenas have δ34S values ranging from +3.55 ‰ to +6.38 ‰ (this excludes one value of +11.21 ‰ from a large but nearly barren quartz vein). Other sulphides are enriched or depleted in 34S in the sense expected for isotopic equilibrium although there is no evidence for isotopic equilibrium between the vein minerals. The sulphide sulphur source was probably in the Dalradian metasediments where disseminated pyrite averages +6 ‰. Baryte had δ34S values averaging 14 ‰ and was therefore not in isotopic equilibrium with sulphides: a continental groundwater source is most likely.

Notes: Summary A highly informative microsatellite marker, DXS426, which maps proximal to DXS7 in the interval Xp11.4–Xp11.23, has been used to refine further the localisation of the gene for Norrie disease (NDP). The results from a multiply informative crossover localize the NDP gene proximal to DXS7. In conjunction with information from 2 NDP patients who have a deletion for DXS7 but not for DSX426, our data indicate that the NDP gene lies between DXS7 and DXS426 on proximal Xp.

Notes: Abstract The Reykjanes and Krafla geothermal fields are both examples of active high temperature systems and show similar assemblages of alteration minerals, but the fluid at Reykjanes is dominantly sea water whereas that at Krafla is meteoric. Oxygen isotope analyses of surface rock and of drill chip samples from different depths are presented, together with results for the Krafla fluid, which is close to local precipitation (δ 18 O = −11.9‰, δD= −86.8‰). Calcite in both systems is apparently in equilibrium with the present deep fluid at the present field temperature, except for the upper 250 m at Reykjanes where the fluid may be more meteoric than at depth. Feldspar gives similar results. Quartz separates at Reykjanes are anomalously lighter than coexisting feldspar and give exceptionally high quartz-fluid temperatures. It is suggested that quartz originally grew when the fluid was more nearly meteoric (? glacial period) and has not re-equilibrated. Bulk-rock 18 O depletion supports this interpretation of the history of the Reykjanes system. Quartz in the Krafla system is mostly in equilibrium at the present field conditions but anomalies occur near the boundary between the upper and lower parts of the system, suggesting that this is not entirely stable. A high fluid:rock ratio (10–100 minimum) is indicated for the Krafla field.

Notes: Summary A somatic hybridisation programme was undertaken to evaluate the expression of reducing sugar accumulation in potato. Interspecific hybrids created between the Solanum tuberosum cultivar Record and the diploid species Solanum phureja were evaluated at the morphological and molecular levels. These analyses indicated that the protoplast regenerants were partial (asymmetric) hybrids which had undergone elimination of S. phureja chromosomes. Tubers of the parents exhibited significant differences for reducing sugar accumulation during cold storage with S. phureja having lower levels of glucose and fructose than Record. The somatic hybrids resembled the S. phureja parent in terms of reducing sugar accumulation demonstrating that low reducing sugar accumulation is dominant to high reducing sugar accumulation in these particular genotypes. These results are discussed in relation to the exploitation of asymmetric hybridisation for the production of potato genotypes for the potato processing industry.

Notes: Summary The effect of Alternaria solani culture filtrate on adventitious shoot regeneration from tuber discs was evaluated using five potato cultivars, which were selected based on their field reaction to Alternaria solani and which represented a range of disease reactions. The culture filtrate stimulated regeneration, a response that could prove to be very useful in the wider utilization of transformation and in vitro selection technology.

Notes: Abstract Tree root activity, including fine-root production, turnover and metabolic activity are significant components of forest productivity and nutrient cycling. Differences in root activity among forest types are not well known. A 3-year study was undertaken in red pine (Pinus resinosa Ait.) and hybrid poplar (Populus tristis X P. balsamifera cv `Tristis no. 1') plantations to compare belowground root dynamics. We measured fine-root production, mortality and standing crop, as well as soil CO2 efflux. Pine fine-root production was only 2.9% of that of poplar during three years; 85 pine roots were observed in minirhizotron tubes compared with 4088 poplar roots. Live-root density oscillated seasonally for both species with late winter minimum and autumn maximum. Poplar reached constant maximum live-root length within the first growing season, but pine continued to increase observed fine-root length for three growing seasons. Within the first 100 days following initial appearance, 22% of the pine roots disappeared and 38% of the poplar roots disappeared. Median fine-root longevity of pine was 291 days compared with 149 days for poplar roots. Fine-root longevity increased with depth in the soil, and was greater for roots with initial diameter 〉0.5 mm. The probability of poplar root death from late February to May was more than three times that in any other season, regardless of root age. Despite the greater poplar root production and live-root length, fine-root biomass and soil CO2 efflux was greater in pine. Greater metabolic activity in the pine stand may be due to greater fine-root biomass or greater heterotrophic respiration.
