Notes: Summary A variety of partly novel tri- and tetracyclic hetero systems were obtained by reaction of heteroaromatic 2-aminoesters with 2-(methylthio)-2-thiazoline, yielding double-annelation of a thiazolo[2,3-b]pyrimido moiety in a one-pot process.

Notes: Summary The male gametogenic development of the immature rat shows inhibitory effect by the exogenous infusion of ACTH (0.25 IU and 0.50 IU; i.p.). Seminiferous tubular degeneration, Leydig cell atrophy and Sertoli cell regression are very conspicuous in the dosage of 0.50 IU ACTH (i.p.). Cytometrical and histological evidence confirms that ACTH could be inhibited by FSH during male gametogenic development which leads to cellular degeneration of testes in the immature rat.

Notes: Abstract Geologic features considered to influence durability of the limestone at the sphinx are depositional history, evolution of porosity, and development of joints. These strata have two orthogonal groups of vertical joints. Where these joints intersect, wedge-shaped blocks are separating, causing loss of material from the core. Major reduction of the sphinx, however, is occurring due to salt crystallization aided by the “ink-bottle” pore systems prevailing in these rocks. The weathering profile exhibits alternating layers, less and more highly weathered. The less weathered rock is a biomicritic grainstone with smaller quantities of halite and gypsum and a larger large-pore-to-throat ratio than the indented, predominantly micritic, layers with larger concentration of salts and a smaller large-pore-to-throat ratio. Based upon poresize distributions, pressures generated in the pores have been calculated using thermodynamic principles, and an equation has been derived that provides a quantitative measure of durability of these rocks.

Notes: Abstract The performance of an underground excavation at the Lucky Friday Mine that was subjected to repetitive episodes of mining-induced seismic activities is assessed. Field measurements indicate that an underground excavation may respond to mining-induced seismicity with step changes in displacement of the rock mass around the excavation or step changes in excavation closures. However, step changes in displacement or closure were also observed without the presence of mine seismic events. This behavior may be explained using the concept of stick-slip on joints or bedding planes within the rock mass. The stick-slip mechanism is believed to be controlled by the state of stresses at a joint or bedding plane. Through this mechanism, joint displacement is accumulated in a progressive fashion leading to a weakening of rock mass around an excavation. As a result, the excavation becomes less stable and therefore is more susceptible to seismic impacts. The concept of using peak particle velocity to assess damage threshold for underground excavations may not be conservative when considering the effect of rock mass fatigue.

Description / Table of Contents: Riassunto Si deriva l'equazione di Schrödinger non lineare che descrive i solitoni dell'involucro nel caso del plasma relativistico a onde ioniche, senza fare ricorso all'usuale teoria di perturbazione riduttiva.
Notes: Summary Nonlinear Schrödinger equation describing the envelope solitons is deduced in the case of ion-acoustic relativistic plasma, without taking recourse to the usual reductive perturbation theory. The methodology is that of Friedet al. (1973), which in some sense can be considered to be an extension of the effective (pseudo) potential theory. Amplitude and velocity of the solitary wave are obtained in terms of the physical parameters of plasma.

Notes: Summary We have considered the effect of electron-ion collision on the structure of the solitary wave in a relativistic unmagnetized plasma. In the present analysis we have considered ions to be cold, the electrons hot. The equation obtained for ion velocity is not the usual KdV type but a perturbed version of it, where the perturbing term is proportional to the electron-ion collision frequency. Lastly we have used the method of Bogoliubov-Mitropolsky to study the change in the solitary-wave profile due to this perturbation.

Notes: Summary The formation of envelope solitons is discussed in a relativistic plasma under the influence of a fluctuating electric field. We use the kinetic-theory approach for our analysis. Due to the larger inertia, only the electrons are considered to be relativistic and the ions to be nonrelativistic. A NLS equation is derived describing the motion of the solitary wave. This NLS equation actually comes from an approximation of a pair of equations which can be considered to be a relativistic generalisation of the Zakharov equation. We next discuss the exact form of the envelope solitary-wave solution of the NLS equation and the modulation stability of such a wave. When the density, momentum and energy of such wave packets are fixeda priori, conditions are derived for the parameters of the problem from such stability consideration.

Notes: Summary We have derived a modified cylindrical K-dV (MCK-dV) equation for an ion-acoustic wave in a warm plasma with two-temperature electrons, in a cylindrical geometry, near the critical density where the nonlinearity of the usual CK-dV vanishes. The solitary-wave solution of MCK-dV is then discussed analytically using the concept of adiabatic invariants and the basic theorem due to Lax, instead of any numerical evaluation. This modulated form of the solitary wave is then discussed graphically as regards its variation with respect to the change in concentration of law- and high-temperature electrons.

Notes: Summary We have analysed the formation of envelope soliton near critical density in a plasma consisting of two-temperature electrons and cold ions. The non-linear Schrödinger-like equation obtained isiφ t +pφ xx +q|φ|4φ=0 which we call the modified non-linear Schrödinger equation. It is also observed that this approach leads to a physical situation where a linear combination of both the modified and usual NLS equations holds, in the formiφ t +pφ xx +q 1|φ|2φ +q 2|φ|4φ=0. It is demonstrated through graphical analysis thatq 1,q 2, thought of as a function of β(=T el/T eh), behave in opposite way. That is, whenq 1 grows,q 2 decays, or vice versa. Lastly we demonstrate that this equation can sustain a type of solution other than the usual solitary profile. The form of such a wave is also depicted graphically.
