Notes: Abstract. —The mechanism of Kaiser effect was studied with the aid of a damage model for rock. Recognizing that the AE counts are transient elastic waves due to local damage of the rock, the quantitative relation between AE counts and statistical distribution of the local strength of the rock has been established. Subsequently, according to Damage Theory, an expression for Kaiser Effect under uniaxial stress state was derived from the model. This is found to be in good agreement with the experimental results.

Notes: Abstract A new transmitting pattern, a buried non-symmetrical electric dipole in a conducting half space, is treated theoretically. A simple formula for the stationary current field of this pattern is derived from the Laplace equation and it is confirmed by the laboratory experiments and a well site experiment. This formula gives the upper limit of the electrical signal strength at the surface, transmitted from the bottom of a drill string.

Notes: Abstract. Given a graph G=(V,E), the well-known spanning forest problem of G can be viewed as the problem of finding a maximal subset F of edges in G such that the subgraph induced by F is acyclic. Although this problem has well-known efficient NC algorithms, its vertex counterpart, the problem of finding a maximal subset U of vertices in G such that the subgraph induced by U is acyclic, has not been shown to be in NC (or even in RNC) and is not believed to be parallelizable in general. In this paper we present NC algorithms for solving the latter problem for two special cases. First, we show that, for a planar graph with n vertices, the problem can be solved in $O(\log^3 n)$ time with O(n) processors on an EREW PRAM. Second, we show that the problem is solvable in NC if the input graph G has only vertex-induced paths of length polylogarithmic in the number of vertices of G. As a consequence of this result, we show that certain natural extensions of the well-studied maximal independent set problem remain solvable in NC. Moreover, we show that, for a constant-degree graph with n vertices, the problem can be solved in $O(\sqrt{n}\log^3n)$ time with O(n 2 ) processors on an EREW PRAM.

Notes: Abstract  A new method of standardizing metal concentrations in sediments was tested on samples from Lake Miccosukee, a large karstic lake in north Florida. Metal concentrations were analyzed in 222 sediment samples from 26 cores representing 9 sampling sites in the lake. Measured sedimentation rates in the lake are low. Percent organic matter strongly increases upward in all the cores. The C/N ratio remains constant throughout all the samples, with a mean value of about 13, regardless of depth or location. All of the geochemical variables are at least approximately log-normally distributed; thus, log-log or semi-log scattergrams were used and the data were log-transformed before statistical calculations were performed. Some elements (Mn, Zn, Hg, Cu, and Ca) are primarily associated with the organic fraction; others (La, Cr, Sr, and Ba) are clearly related to the terrigenous fraction; others show affinities for both fractions. Consequently, no bivariate scattergrams or plots of ratio versus depth – commonly used for standardization by plotting or ratioing a reference element (such as Al) to an element of interest – were found to be adequate for standardization of this dataset. The best method for standardization was found to be one based on multivariate (trivariate) linear regression, using log Al and log C as the independent variables (reference elements representing terrigenous and organic fractions, respectively), and the log of the element of interest as the dependent variable. Residuals (deviations) from the best-fit linear surface were then plotted versus depth in the cores to accomplish the standardization. The results indicate that, with the possible exception of Mn at two sites, there is little evidence of anthropogenic input of trace elements to the lake, and most trace-element concentrations in the lake can be considered as valuable baseline information. A significant finding is that different and erroneous conclusions might have been reached if other standardization methods, not based on trivariate regression, had been employed.

Notes: Abstract  Hydrological records collected from water gauge stations since the 1950s demonstrate that the Taihu lake level is rising. The average rate of the lake-level rise is 0.4–1.1 mm/year during the non-flood season, resulting directly from a rise in sea level. High rates of 3.0–5.0 mm/year of rise are even recorded during the wet season. This indicates increasing human activities such as reclamation, sluicing and embanking, which significantly hinder the expulsion of extra lake water to the coast shortly after a rainfall. Generally, the lake level of the western inlet is higher than that of the eastern outlet. However, the lake-level difference between the west and east has been diminished annually from ∼10–15 cm in the 1950s to 〈3 cm at the present time. During non-flood seasons, the lake-level difference even appears to be reversed, indicating a retrogression of the lake flow from east to west. It is predicted that the Taihu drainage basin will lose much of its natural water-expelling ability in the next 50 years as the sea level continues to rise, and retrogression will likely occur during the flood season in the near future.

Notes: Abstract. We give sufficient conditions for the existence of positive solutions to some semilinear elliptic equations in bounded domains $D \subset \Bbb R^n$ $(n\ge 3)$ with Dirichlet boundary conditions. We impose mild conditions on the domains and lower order (nonlinear) coefficients of the equations in that the bounded domains are only required to satisfy an exterior cone condition and we allow the coefficients to have singularities controlled by Kato class functions. Our approach uses an implicit probabilistic representation, Schauder's fixed point theorem, and new a priori estimates for solutions of the corresponding linear elliptic equations. In the course of deriving these a priori estimates we show that the Green functions for operators of the form ${1\over 2} \Delta + b\cdot \nabla$ on D are comparable when one modifies the drift term b on a compact subset of D. This generalizes a previous result of Ancona [2], obtained under an $L^p$ condition on b, to a Kato condition on $|b|^2$ .
