Notes: Abstract This work investigates data structures for representing and manipulatingd-dimensional geometric objects for arbitraryd ≥ 1. A class of geometric objects is defined, the “subdividedd-manifolds,” which is large enough to encompass many applications. A new representation is given for such objects, the “cell-tuple structure,” which provides direct access to topological structure, ordering information among cells, the topological dual, and boundaries. The cell-tuple structure gives a simple, uniform representation of subdivided manifolds which unifies the existing work in the field and provides intuitive clarity in all dimensions. The dual subdivision, and boundaries, are represented consistently. This work has direct applications in solid modeling, computer graphics, and computational geometry.

Notes: Abstract We give the first efficient parallel algorithms for solving the arrangement problem. We give a deterministic algorithm for the CREW PRAM which runs in nearly optimal bounds ofO (logn log* n) time andn 2/logn processors. We generalize this to obtain anO (logn log* n)-time algorithm usingn d /logn processors for solving the problem ind dimensions. We also give a randomized algorithm for the EREW PRAM that constructs an arrangement ofn lines on-line, in which each insertion is done in optimalO (logn) time usingn/logn processors. Our algorithms develop new parallel data structures and new methods for traversing an arrangement.

Notes: Summary We have analyzed the sequences of soybean leghemoglobin genes as an initial step toward understanding their mode of evolution. Alignment of the sequences of plant globin genes with those of animals reveals that (i) based on the proportion of nucleotide substitutions that have occurred at the first, second, and third codon positions, the time of divergence of plant and animal globin gene families appears to be extremely remote (between 900 million and 1.4 billion years ago, if one assumes constancy of evolutionary rate in both the plant and animal lineages) and (ii) in addition to the normal regulatory sequences on the 5′ end, an approximately 30-base-pair sequence, specific to globin genes, that surrounds the cap site is conserved between the plant and animal globin genes. Comparison of the leghemoglobin sequences with one another shows that (i) the relative amount of sequence divergence in various coding and noncoding regions is roughly similar to that found for animal globin genes and (ii) as in animal globin genes, the positions of insertions and deletions in the intervening sequences often coincide with the locations of direct repeats. Thus, the mode of evolution of the plant globin genes appears to resemble, in many ways, that of their animal counterparts. We contrast the overall intergenic organization of the plant globin genes with that of animal genes, and discuss the possibility of the concerted evolution of the leghemoglobin genes.

Description / Table of Contents: Abstract The major fold pattern of the Chibougamau region in the Archean Abitibi Belt, Quebec, is the result of two fold phases. The principal F1-synclines first formed as subsiding fault troughs, and were shortened in NS direction and molded around volcanic centers that had been consolidated by large synvolcanic plutons; they have a general easterly direction but curve locally to the NE or SE. N-trending F1-folds are locally present in the anticlinoria and are thought to have been produced by the upwelling of basement gneiss and/or synvolcanic plutons. The F2-folds have rather regular easterly trends; their axial plane schistosity S2 is the predominant planar fabric element. Basin margin faults were transformed into east-trending thrust faults during the F1- and F2-folding. The superposed schistosities S3 and S4 are conjugate shear planes related to NS shortening. They and the kink bands produce only minor strain except at a few localities. Synkinematic and late kinematic diapiric plutons pierce the structural pattern. The F1-folds, derived from the paleogeographic pattern during the uplift of volcanic islands and during the subsidence of fault basins, may also be interpreted as diapiric. Thus, diapirism took place during the whole period of NS compression. ENE trending left-lateral shear belts and their associated first and second order faults, displaced the Kenoran structures in late Archean and early Proterozoic time.

Description / Table of Contents: Abstract The Chibougamau area, Québec, is characteristic of the internal zone of the Archean Abitibi Orogenic Belt. The paleogeographic, paleotectonic and magmatic history of the Archean sequence in the Chibougamau area is subdivided into three stages. In the first stage a submarine volcanic chain formed mainly by the effusion of submarine lava flows composed of primitive, potash-poor, tholeiitic basalt. The volcanic chain gradually grew to sea level. In the second stage, volcanic islands emerged and grew. Mainly pyroclastic eruptions of strongly differentiated, calc-alkaline andesite and dacite concentrated on the volcanic islands, whereas effusion of basalt continued at first in the surrounding basin. A felsic volcaniclastic apron was deposited around the volcanic islands. In the third stage, the volcanic islands were uplifted and were eroded to the level of their subvolcanic plutons. The debris derived from this volcanic-plutonic terrain was deposited in downfaulted marine and continental basins. The contemporaneous volcanism was shoshonitic. The first paleogeographic stage is interpreted as the growth of an immature island arc. During the second stage, the island arc became mature and its crust was thickened by accretion of plutonic material. The third stage is a period of back-arc extension.

Notes: Abstract Physiological and metabolic output responses to facial cooling during a graded maximal exercise and a prolonged submaximal exercise lasting 30 min at 65% $$\dot VO_2$$ max were investigated in five male subjects. Pedalling on a cycle ergometer was performed both with and without facial cooling (10°C, 4.6 m s−1). Facial cooling at the end of graded maximal exercise apparently had no effect on plasma lactate (LA), maximal oxygen consumption ( $$\dot VO_2$$ max), maximal heart rate (HR max), rectal temperature (T re), work-load, lactate threshold (LT), ventilatory threshold (VT) and onset of blood lactate accumulation (OBLA). However, the response to facial cooling after prolonged submaximal exercise is significantly different for heart rate and work-load. The results suggest that facial wind stimulation during maximal exercise does not produce a stress high enough to alter the metabolic and physiological responses.

Notes: Abstract This study was designed to clarify the effects of cold air exposure on metabolic and hormonal responses during progressive incremental exercise. Eight healthy males volunteered for the study. Informed consent was obtained from every participant. The following protocol was administered to each subject on three occasions in a climatic chamber in which the temperature was 20°, 0° or −20°C with relative humidity at 60%±1%. Exercise tests were conducted on an electrically braked ergocycle, and consisted of a propressive incremental maximal exercise. Respiratory parameters were continuously monitored by an automated open-circuit sampling system Exercise blood lactate (LA), free fatty acids (FFA), glucose levels, bicarbonate concentration (HCO 3 − ), acidbase balance, plasma epinephrine (E) and norepinephrine (NE) were determined from venous blood samples obtained through an indwelling brachial catheter. Maximal oxygen uptake was significantly different between conditions: 72.0±5.4 ml kg−1 min−1 at 20°C; 68.9±5.1 ml kg−1 min−1 at 0°C and 68.5±4.6 ml kg−1 min−1 at −20°C. Workload, time to exhaustion, glucose levels and rectal Catecholamines and lactate values were not significantly altered by thermal conditions after maximal exercise but the catecholamines were decreased during rest. Bicarbonate, respiratory quotient, lactate and ventilatory thresholds increased significantly at −20°C. The data support the contention that metabolic and hormonal responses following progressive incremental exercise are altered by cold exposure and they indicate a marked decrease in maximal oxygen uptake, time to exhaustion and workload.

Notes: Summary Neutrophil alkaline phosphatase (NAP) was analysed in 25 pregnant women with trisomy 21 foetuses whose chromosomal aberration was recognized by cytogenetic study after amniocentesis. Enzyme investigation was performed at 20–22 weeks of gestation using cytochemical and biochemical techniques. Twenty-nine women at the same stage of normal pregnancies were selected as controls. In parallel, each mother was karyotyped. Ten subjects from each series underwent biochemical and immunological investigation: measurement of enzyme levels, thermostability study and immunological tests with alkaline phosphatase isoenzyme antibodies. NAP from pregnant women with trisomy 21 foetuses was characterized by: (1) a lower rate of enzyme activity, (2) a large amount of heat-stable enzyme (T=56°C for biochemical assays, T=85°C for cytochemical tests), and (3) a marked loss of liver antigenicity. These findings suggest the presence in trisomy 21 pregnancies of a non-specific alkaline phosphatase isoenzyme which appears as an “enzyme marker” in maternal circulating neutrophils.

Notes: Summary Tissue-plasminogen activator (t-PA) has been identified in human megakaryocytes isolated from human rib fragments or from culture cells. The presence of t-PA antigen in the endoplasmic reticulum of mature cells was demonstrated by ultrastructural immunochemistry. These results suggest that t-PA can be synthesized by megakaryocytes as well as by vascular endothelial cells. In order to confirm this possibility, in situ hybridization using antisense RNA biotinylated probe was used in megakaryocyte culture at different steps of maturation. The presence of t-PA-RNA was clearly demonstrated at an early step of differentiation. Biotin staining was enhanced in mature cells and this was correlated with the detection of t-PA antigen by immunocytochemistry.

Notes: Abstract The defense-related STH-2 gene is rapidly activated following infection or elicitor treatment of potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) tubers. However, its physiological or biochemical function is unknown. To study the STH-2 gene product and its accumulation during the defense response, we raised antibodies to a β-galactosidase-STH-2 fusion protein in Escherichia coli. The antiserum specifically recognized a protein of the predicted 17-kDa size in extracts of elicited tuber disks when analyzed by Western blot. In control extracts this band was not detected. The accumulation of STH-2 protein in response to incompatible and compatible zoospores of Phytophthora infestans (Mont.) de Bary depended on the inoculum density applied. Whereas a low concentration of spores induced accumulation of STH-2 protein faster in the incompatible than the compatible interaction, this difference in timing was less pronounced at higher inoculum densities. Inoculation with a high concentration of compatible spores also resulted in the disappearance of STH-2 protein late during the infection. In both control and induced tuber tissue the antibody strongly reacted with an unknown protein of 18 kDa. This protein was present constitutively in tubers, but in leaves its accumulation was stimulated by inoculation with P. infestans.
