Notes: Abstract. Aleksandrov [1] proved that a simple convex d -dimensional polytope, d ≥ 3 , is infinitesimally rigid if the volumes of its facets satisfy a certain assumption of stationarity. We extend this result by proving that this assumption can be replaced by a stationarity assumption on the k -dimensional volumes of the polytope's k -dimensional faces, where k ∈{1,. . .,d-1} .

Notes: Abstract  Kinetic parameters (V max and K m) of dehydrogenase activity were determined in order to assess the metabolic response of a soil about 1 year after organic and mineral treatments. The soil was planted with maize (Zea mays) and treated with the following fertilisers: organic (vermicompost; VC), mineral (ammonium phosphate and urea), and an organo-mineral mixture. V max, which represents a measurement of the quantity of enzyme, markedly increased in organic and organo-mineral treatments, indicating that the addition of organic matter caused an increase in dehydrogenase in the active microbial biomass. K m, representing enzyme-substrate affinity and/or different sources of the enzymes, was similar in VC-treated soil and control soil, while it doubled in organo-mineral and mineral treatments. These results suggest that the use of VC did not alter the enzyme-substrate affinity, while mineral fertiliser reduced this affinity or changed the composition and activity of soil microbiota. A positive correlation was found between V max, the metabolic index (dehydrogenase/water-soluble carbon ratio), and the soil organic matter content. The kinetic constants of dehydrogenase activity and the metabolic index may be considered valid parameters to monitor the evolution of microbiological activity in soil.

Notes: Abstract Rhodospirillum centenum exhibited a number of general properties typically observed in nonsulfur purple bacteria, but also displayed a number of unusual characteristics that include: (1) conversion of the vibrioid/spiral cells to thick-walled cysts under certain growth conditions; (2) absence of O2 repression of photopigment synthesis; (3) synthesis of “R-bodies”; and (4) swarming motility on agar surfaces that allows macroscopic observation of colony phototaxis. The unusual characteristics indicate that Rsp.centenum will prove to be a valuable experimental system for investigating various basic problems, especially in connection with photosensory phenomena and the regulation of photopigment synthesis by dioxygen and light. The present comparative study of 13 strains was undertaken to further define the Rsp. centenum biotype.

Notes: Abstract Most photosynthetic microorganisms have the capability of photosensing light quality and intensity. Movement of motile photosynthetic microorganisms to locales that offer optimal physical and chemical conditions for light-dependent growth provides obvious selective advantages. Among phototrophs, many cyanobacteria and algae migrate towards or away from the direction of light, a process termed phototaxis. In contrast, anoxygenic photosynthetic bacteria are believed to respond to changes in light intensity in a manner that is not related to the direction of light, a process that is often described by the term "photophobic". We recently reported that "swarm colonies" of the purple photosynthetic bacterium Rhodospirillum centenum are capable of macroscopically visible phototactic behavior. In the present study we further characterize the phototactic behavior of R. centenum swarm colonies and provide an action spectrum that delineates regions of the spectrum that elicit positive and negative phototaxis.

Notes: Abstract. In this article we present explicit formulae for q-differentiation on quantum spaces which could be of particular importance in physics, i.e., q-deformed Minkowski space and q-deformed Euclidean space in three or four dimensions. The calculations are based on the covariant differential calculus of these quantum spaces. Furthermore, our formulae can be regarded as a generalization of Jackson’s q-derivative to three and four dimensions.

Notes: Abstract Absolute Ag, Ta and AuL-shell X-ray cross sections were measured using protons,4He,14N as well as20Ne ions in the energy range of 0.125–4 MeV/amu. By means of single-hole fluorescence yields experimental ionization cross sections were deduced and compared with calculations according to the corrected PWBA model — PWBA(BPCR). With decreasing asymmetry of the collision system the experimental cross sections exceed the predictions of the direct ionization theory. This is caused by an increasing contribution of a competing KL charge exchange mechanism which was investigated in detail for Ne+Ag. The Lapicki and Losonsky capture model was found to fail at energiesE〈1 MeV/amu because adiabatic relaxation effects in the projectileK-shell become important. An estimation by means of the Nikitin model led to more physically comprehensible results at the lowest ion velocities investigated.

Notes: Abstract: Based on a microscopic density functional theory we calculate the internal structure of the three-phase contact line between liquid, vapor, and a confining wall as well as the morphology of liquid wetting films on a substrate exhibiting a chemical step. We present a refined numerical analysis of the nonlocal density functional which describes the interface morphologies and the corresponding line tensions. These results are compared with those predicted by a more simple phenomenological interface displacement model. Except for the case that the interface exhibits large curvatures, we find that the interface displacement model provides a quantitatively reliable description of the interfacial structures.
