Notes: Abstract Tests for the discrete scattering Hurwitz property of two-dimensional (2-D) polynomials are suggested. Results belonging to two different categories are presented. The first procedure uses a finite number of rational operations and relies on the so-called polynomial resultant algebra. Alternative methods of testing, which are computationally less complex to implement are also developed.

Notes: Abstract Steinhaus [9] prove that if a set A has a positive Lebesgue measure in the line then its distance set contains an interval. He obtained even stronger forms of this result in [9], which are concerned with mutual distances between points in an infinite sequence of sets. Similar theorems in the case we replace distance by mutual ratio were established by Bose-Majumdar [1]. In the present paper, we endeavour to obtain some results related to sets with Baire property in locally compact topological spaces, particular cases of which yield the Baire category analogues of the above results of Steinhaus [9] and their corresponding form for ratios by Bose-Majumdar [1].

Notes: Abstract —The present study emphasizes the importance of proper representation of boundary layer physics in a general circulation model. The Turbulent Kinetic Energy (TKE) closure scheme incorpo rates important processes of the Planetary Boundary Layer (PBL) compared to a simplistic first-order closure model. Hence the model which has the TKE closure scheme is capable of simulating important weather systems associated with summer monsoon, such as monsoon depressions and lows that form over the Indian subcontinent quite well compared to the first-order closure model. The present study indicates better performance of the global model with the TKE scheme in the prediction of the monsoon circulation, including the tracks of the depressions over the Indian subcontinent. Medium-range weather prediction has also improved with the use of the TKE closure. However further studies are necessary to improve the forecast, with emphasis on boundary layer processes.

Notes: Abstract We identified for the first time the 3d 94d 1 S − 3d 94p 1 P line in Ni-like Nb at 204.2 Å that was predicted to show gain. When pumped with a train of pulses containing less than 1 J per pulse, significant emission was recorded at 204.2 Å following the second and the third pulses. We measured the small signal gain coefficient per Joule of incident laser energy to be 1.49±0.42 cm−1 J−1 for this laser transition, which is higher by several orders of magnitude than that reported for other collisional laser systems in this wavelength range.

Notes: Summary In this study, a detailed examination on the evolution of summer monsoon onset over southern tip of the Indian peninsula, its advancement and withdrawal over the Indian sub-continent is carried out by utilizing the analysis/forecast fields of a global spectral model for Monsoon-1995. The data base used in this study is derived from the archives of global data assimilation and forecasting system of NCMRWF, India, valid for 00UTC at 1.5° latitude/longitude resolution for the summer monsoon period of 1995. By utilizing the analyses and forecast fields, and the established knowledge of the Indian monsoon, objective criteria are employed in this study for determining the onset, advancement, and withdrawal of the monsoon. It is found that all the major characteristics of Monsoon-1995 are captured well by the analysis-forecast system even though the criteria adopted in this study are more objective and different in nature as compared to the conventional procedures. The onset date of monsoon over the southern tip of the Indian peninsula as determined by the dynamical onset procedure is found to be matching well with the realized date. Further, the evolution of monsoon onset characteristics over the Arabian Sea both in the analyses and forecasts is found to be in good agreement with the earlier studies. However, the magnitudes of net tropospheric moisture build-up and tropospheric temperature increase differ with respect to analyses and corresponding forecast fields. In addition, all important characteristics of the advancement and withdrawal of monsoon over the Indian sub-continent viz. stagnation, revival etc., are brought out reasonably well by the analysis and forecast system.

Notes: Abstract After 8 months of nearly continuous measurements the GOLF instrument, aboard SOHO, has detected acoustic mode frequencies of more than 100 modes, extending from 1.4 mHz to 4.9 mHz. In this paper, we compare these results with the best available predictions coming from solar models. To verify the quality of the data, we examine the asymptotic seismic parameters; this confirms the improvements achieved in solar models during the last decade. Using the GOLF set of frequencies for l=0, 1, 2, 3 combined with the LOWL second year data set for l 〉 3 we then carry out inversions to infer properties of the solar core. This largely confirms the previous results down to around 0.1 R⊙, while there remain differences, even closer to the centre, where the present study shows an extreme sensitivity of the inversion results to the values of the frequencies. We finally consider physical processes which may influence directly or indirectly the solar core structure.
