Notes: Abstract The permanent epithelial insect cell line used was derived from Chironomus tentans embryos. Cells are maintained in suspension culture, where they grow as single-layered vesicles. On treatment with the moulting hormone 20-OH-ecdysone cell division ceases. Patches of cuboidal epithelium appear in the vesicles which finally become multilayered and form bud-like protrusions at the outside. In the present study, we localized cholinesterase activity in the cell protrusions by histochemistry and demonstrated coexpression of cholinergic muscarinic receptors by immunofluorescence. Muscarinic receptors were visualized with the monoclonal antibody M35. Six hours after treatment with 20-OH-ecdysone, muscarinic receptors appeared in a few individual cells of the epithelial vesicles before morphological changes became visible. After 24 h, immunofluorescence was concentrated in multilayered patches which now also showed cholinesterase activity. After 3 days, muscarinic receptors and cholinesterase activity were localized in the epithelium protrusions. The results are discussed in the context of an embryonic cholinergic muscarinic system the expression of which has been described in vertebrate and non-vertebrate embryos and is correlated with phases of morphogenesis.

Notes: Summary The radiation tables byElsasser andCulbertson [1]2) are based upon an integrated form of the radiative transfer equation. Unfortunately, a term dealing with the temperature dependency of the transmission function is left out. This leads to an inconsistency of their analysis. It is the aim of this paper to correct and to modifyElsasser's graphical-numerical procedure such as to make his treatment internally consistent.

Notes: Abstract A method is developed for separating νN interactions from interactions involving an intranuclear cascade in νNe scattering at a mean neutrino energy of 145 GeV. The fraction of events featuring a cascade is evaluated by using a sample of νNe charged-current interactions. It is found that the multiplicity of charged particles in the forward direction takes the same value for events with and without a cascade for 4〈W 2〈550 GeV2. In the backward direction, cascade events have the charge multiplicity higher than the multiplicity for cascade-free events by 2.36 units. It is found that particles with momenta less than 2 GeV/c make a dominant contribution to the rescattering process. A depletion of the fastest particles for W 2〈50 GeV2 is observed, in accord with the formation-time concept.

Notes: Abstract The 1981–82 Solar Mesosphere Explorer (SME) mission is described. The SME experiment will provide a comprehensive study of mesospheric ozone and the processes which form and destroy it. Five instruments will be carried on the spinning spacecraft to measure the ozone density and its altitude distribution from 30 to 80 km, monitor the incoming solar ultraviolet radiation, and measure other atmospheric constituent which affect ozone. The polar-orbiting spacecraft will be placed into a 3pm-3 am Sun-synchronous orbit. The atmospheric measurements will scan the Earth's limb and measure: (1) the mesospheric and stratospheric ozone density distribution by inversion of Rayleigh-scattered ultraviolet limb radiance, and the thermal emission from ozone at 9.6 μm; (2) the water vapor density distribution by inversion of thermal emission at 6.3 μm; (3) the ozone photolysis rate by inversion of the O2(1Δg) 1.27 μm limb radiance; (4) the temperature profile by a combination of narrow-band and wide-band measurements of the 15 μm thermal emission by CO2; and, (5) theNO2 density distribution by inversion of Rayleighscattered limb radiance at 0.439 μm. The solar ultraviolet monitor will measure both the 0.2–0.31 μm spectral region and the Lyman-alpha (0.1216 μm) contribution to the solar irradiance. This combination of measurements will provide a rigorous test of the photochemical equilibrium theory of the mesospheric oxygen-hydrogen system, will determine what changes occur in the ozone distribution as a result of changes in the incoming solar radiation, and will detect changes that may occur as a result of meteorological disturbances.

Notes: Summary An epithelial cell line from Chironomus tentans exhibits acetylcholinesterase activity (specific activity 0.05–0.2 nkat/mg protein), which rises 30− to 40-fold after addition of 10−6 M 20-OH-ecdysone. The first visible increase occurs after 4 days of incubation with hormone. The enzyme has an apparent K m of 2.3±0.2×10−4 M for acetylthiocholine iodide as substrate and is inhibited by eserine and BW284 C51 (50% inhibition at 5×10−7 M for both inhibitiors) as well as by high concentrations of substrate, but not by tetraisopropylpyrophosphamide. The sensitivity against inhibitors is the same in extracts from hormone-treated cells and from controls. The cholinesterase activity correlates with morphological changes (shape and cell arrangement) and is indepenent of neuronal differentiation. We therefore propose a function for this activity during morphogenesis.

Notes: Abstract  In order to investigate the application of the elemental abundance of boron and its stable isotopes, 10B and 11B, for tracing anthropogenic contamination of variably mineralized thermal and mineral waters, B concentrations and isotopic compositions (δ11B) were determined for sample pairs collected during surveys in 1984–1986 and 1995 from representative wells discharging water from deep crustal reservoirs within the central European crystalline basement and sedimentary cover (SW Germany and N Switzerland). The data presented show that natural temporal variations in the total B contents of thermal and mineral waters are a common feature, which makes it difficult to recognize admixture of extraneous (anthropogenic) components from B concentrations alone. Delineation of the natural versus anthropogenic origin of solutes and quantification of the relative mixing proportions may thus benefit considerably from the utilization of boron isotopes as an additional parameter. Hypothetical mixing scenarios involving various thermal waters and municipal wastewater effluents from the study area, with the latter being characterized by conspicuously light boron isotopic compositions, reveal that, in certain cases, δ11B values provide a superior diagnostic tool for detection of objectionable substances derived from the discharge of man-made boron products.

Notes: Abstract In this paper we consider divisor classes on elliptic modular surfaces S(n) and their associated linear systems. A principal role is played by divisors I which have the property that nI (resp. n/2I) is linearly equivalent to the sum of the n2 sections if n is odd (resp. even). Our main result is the description of four different projective realizations of S(5). Some results concerning S(3) and S(4) are also discussed.

Notes: Abstract Chitinase andN-acetyl-β-D-glucosaminidase activity were quantified inPalaemon serratus (Pennant) integument and midgut gland during the moulting cycle. Studies were performed on specimens collected near Concarneau, France, in July 1989. The changes in specific activity are different in the two organs: in the midgut gland enzymatic activity is high throughout the whole moulting cycle with a weak peak at the early premoult Stage D1′, whereas in the integument the activity of both enzymes is very low throughout post- and intermoult stages and rises only after premoult Stage D1′. The highest specific activity is reached in D1‴ for chitinase and somewhat earlier (D1″) forN-acetyl-β-D-glucosaminidase. The increase in specific chitinolytic activity coincides with an increase in ecdysteroids.

Notes: Abstract Horrocks has shown that every vector bundle on ℙ2 and ℙ3 admits a certain “double-ended resolution” by line bundles, which he called a monad. We reprove Horrocks' results taking much care of uniqueness of the monads so obtained. This technique should be useful for constructing moduli spaces of stable vector bundles.
