    Notes: Abstract The problem of finding appropriate mathematical objects to model images is considered. Using the notion of acompleted graph of a bounded function, which is a closed and bounded point set in the three-dimensional Euclidean spaceR 3, and exploring theHausdorff distance between these point sets, a metric spaceIM D of functions is defined. The main purpose is to show that the functionsf∈IM D, defined on the squareD=[0,1]2, are appropriate mathematical models of real world images. The properties of the metric spaceIM D are studied and methods of approximation for the purpose of image compression are presented. The metric spaceIM D contains the so-calledpixel functions which are produced through digitizing images. It is proved that every functionf∈IM D may be digitized and represented by a pixel functionp n, withn pixels, in such a way that the distance betweenf andp n is no greater than 2n −1/2. It is advocated that the Hausdorff distance is the most natural one to measure the difference between two pixel representations of a given image. This gives a natural mathematical measure of the quality of the compression produced through different methods.

    Notes: Abstract This work explores the potential of laser excited luminescence for the study of type and concentration of rare-earth (RE) luminescence centres in CaF2. A comparison with X-ray excited luminescence is made. The luminescence spectra of several natural and synthetic samples are obtained at low and room temperatures using different Ar+ and Kr+ laser lines for excitation. Tentative assignment of the luminescent lines to different RE2+ and RE3+ ions is made. The excitation is shown to take place predominantly through the emission of one phonon. The possibilities for concentration measurements of luminescent centres are discussed.

    Notes: Abstract Severe losses of NH3 by volatilization are often reported when urea is surface applied to calcareous soils. Applications on wet soils may increase these losses. This study with N rates of 0, 20, 40, 80, 160, and 320 kg ha−1 estimates the efficiency of urea application and predicts NH3-volatilization losses when urea is surface applied on a wet calcareous soil. Placements consisted of three different methods of applying urea on or in the dry soil just prior to irrigation and a surface-broadcast treatment following irrigation. There were no significant yield differences between dry-soil placements, but all dry-soil placements gave significantly higher yields than did broadcast placement of urea on the wet soil. Thus, a second-order regression equation relating N rate and yield for dry-soil placements and another for wet-soil placement were used to determine the efficiency of wet- vs dry-soil applications of urea and to predict NH3-volatilization losses from the wet soil. The efficiency was determined by three different procedures. The first compared the amount of N needed for wet- vs dry-soil conditions to produce discrete yields. The second compared the slope of the yield curves at discrete yield levels to determine the ratio of the amount of N needed to produce one additional increment of yield under wet- vs dry-soil conditions. The third was an estimation of the availability coefficient according to a method recently developed by HR Tejeda and others. Predicted NH3 -volatilization losses were calculated from the efficiency values because loss of NH3 from urea applied on or in dry soil followed very shortly by an irrigation should be almost nil. The efficiency factors averaged 55% for the first procedure and 51% for the second while the availability coefficient was 59%. Thus, the average estimate for efficiency of urea on wet vs dry soil was 55% and predicted losses of N by NH3 volatilization averaged 45% when urea was applied to the wet surface of this calcareous soil.

    Notes: Zusammenfassung Es wurde an 60 Personen zwischen 25–55 Jahren (40 Männer und 20 Frauen) röntgenologisch die Breite der Kondylen des Femurs und des Humerus bestimmt. Das „Mager“ gewicht des Körpers haben wir mit einer durch uns modifizierten Methode des Verfahrens vonD. P. Willoughby aus der Schulterbreite und der Beckenbreite berechnet. Wir konnten die Annahme von W.v. Döbeln bestätigend feststellen, daß die bikondylären Breiten des Armknochens und des Schenkelknochens zur Beurteilung des „Mager“gewichtes verwendet werden können. Auch an fossilen Knochenresten von Ausgrabungen kann dieses Verfahren leicht zur Beurteilung des „Mager“-bzw. des Körpergewichtes angewendet werden.
