Notes: Summary The abundance of nematodes was investigated in agricultural plots treated in three different ways, the first with no treatment, the second with 300 m3 ha-1 a-1 raw sewage sludge and the third with 300 m3 ha-1 a-1 sewage sludge with the addition of heavy metals. The nematodes were determined down to the genus and were assigned to five feeding groups. Total nematode numbers were highest in the site treated with sewage sludge and heavy metals. The smallest total numbers were found in the control site. The plant-feeding nematode genera showed different patterns of abundance depending on the sludge treatment and heavy metal content. For the mycophagic and bacteriophagic nematodes, numbers increased with the amount of sludge, especially in the sites with a higher heavy metal content. The family Rhabditidae was the most numerous group in the sludge plus heavy metals treatment. In contrast to these findings, the omnivorous nematodes were very rare in the sludgetreated plots and were completely absent in plots treated with sludge plus heavy metals, whereas predatory nematodes were numerous only after the application of sludge alone.

    Notes: Abstract. For a countable group G and an action (X, G) of G on a compact metrizable space X, let M G (X) denote the simplex of probability measures on X invariant under G. The natural action of G on the space of functions $ \Omega = \{ 0,1 \}^G $ , will be denoted by $ (\Omega, G) $ . We prove the following results.¶(i) If G has property T then for every (topological) G-action (X, G), M G (X), when non-empty, is a Bauer simplex (i.e. the set of ergodic measures (extreme points) in M G (X) is closed).¶(ii) G does not have property T if the simplex M G $ (\Omega) $ is the Poulsen simplex (i.e. the ergodic measures are dense in M G $ (\Omega) $ ).¶For G a locally compact, second countable group, we introduce an appropriate G-space $ (\Sigma, G) $ analogous to the G-space $ (\Omega, G) $ and then prove similar results for this more general case.

Notes: Abstract We establish large deviations bounds for translation invariant Gibbs measures of multidimensional subshifts of finite type. This generalizes [FO] and partially [C, O, and B], where only full shifts were considered. Our framework includes, in particular, the hard-core lattice gas models which are outside of the scope of [FO, C, O, and B].

Notes: Abstract Deletions of the pseudoautosomal region (PAR1) of the sex chromosomes have recently been discovered in individuals with short stature, and a minimal common deletion region of 700 kb within PAR1 has subsequently been defined. We have cloned this entire region, which is bounded by the Xp/Yp telomere, as an overlapping cosmid contig. In the present study, we have used fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) to study four patients with X-chromosomal rearrangements, two with normal height and two with short stature. Genotype-phenotype correlations have narrowed down the the critical “short stature interval” to a 270-kb region containing the gene with an important role in growth. A minimal tiling path of 6–8 cosmids bridging this interval is now available for interphase and metaphase FISH and provides a valuable tool for diagnostic investigations of patients with idiopathic short stature.

Notes: Abstract: The decay of 123Ba to 123Cs has been studied with mass-separated sources. Singles spectra of -rays, X-rays and conversion electrons as well as , , and X-e-t coincidences were recorded. A level scheme of 123Cs has been constructed including 26 new excited states and 82 transitions. The existence of a I =11/2-, T =1.7 s isomer, bandhead of the h band, is confirmed. Its excitation energy equals 156.3 keV. A new T =114 ns isomer has been established at 232 keV using the in-beam recoil catcher technique. It is assigned to the I =9/2+ bandhead of the g band. Collective bands based on the 1/2+ ground state and first 3/2+ excited state are proposed. The level structure is described in the frame of the interacting boson-fermion and core-quasiparticle coupling models.

Notes: Abstract The results of measurements of the gamma-ray and conversion-electron singles and coincidence spectra from the decay of the 122 s121m Cs and the 155 s121g Cs to levels of121Xe are reported. TheM 3 multipolarity of the 68.5 keV isomeric transition in121Cs has been deduced. Numerous low-lying levels below 1.6 MeV excitation energy are found. A negative-parity level at 355.9 keV is observed for the first time. The results supplement the low lying energy level systematics in odd-A xenons. A comparison is made with theN=67 barium isotone.

Notes: Abstract: The decay of the 17 μs isomer of 133Sb was re-investigated experimentally. It was produced by thermal neutron induced fission of 241Pu. Its detection is based on time correlation between fission fragments selected by the LOHENGRIN spectrometer at ILL (Grenoble), and the γ-rays, and conversion electrons from the isomer. The interpretation of the level scheme is based on shell model calculations, where empirical two-body matrix elements were employed. The good agreement between theory and experiment suggests that the isomer is the 21/2+ member of the 2p-1h πg 7/2ν(f 7/2 h 11/2 −1) configuration.

Notes: Abstract: High spin states of 126La have been populated using the reaction 116Sn+14N at 68 MeV. γ-rays and conversion electrons were detected with the GAREL array. Multipolarities of the lowest-lying in-band dipole transitions have been determined from the deduced internal conversion coefficients. Experimental B(M1)/B(E2) ratios have been derived for the bands and compared with calculated values using the Dönau-Frauendorf geometrical model. Configurations are proposed for the bands comparing them with cranked shell model calculations and on the basis of the measured B(M1)/B(E2) ratios. The β-decay of 126La has also been revisited. The population of the 126Ba levels gives a probable spin value of five for the decaying high-spin 126La state with T 1/2≈ 64 s which may indicate a signature inversion in the πh11/2νh11/2 band.
