Description / Table of Contents: Summary Rectilinear flows of mixtures of a gas and droplets consisting of the same material are treated. If the velocity, the temperature and the vapour pressure of the droplets are different from the corresponding values of the gas, equalizing processes occur. Here especially, such cases are considered in which the temperature of the gas decreases. The influence of the various parameters on this effect is discussed for nitrogen.

Notes: Summary Slip boundary conditions are deduced for the Navier-Stokes equations describing the flow of a mixture of gases along a wall. Chemical reactions and changes of the internal energy at the wall are taken into account. A simplified approximation is introduced for a special case of the flow of a binary mixture consisting of atoms and molecules, which can be used as a model in treating the high-altitude flight of a space vehicle. The resulting conditions are compared with those given by other authors.

Notes: Abstract The influence of hydrostatic pressure on the stability and activity of glutamate dehydrogenase (GDH) from the liver of the Antarctic fish Chaenocephalus aceratus (Notothenioidei: Channichthyidae) has been investigated using the homologous bovine enzyme for comparison. At gradually increasing pressure, the fish GDH retains all activity up to 140 MPa, whereas in the same pressure range the bovine enzyme is slightly inactivated. The kinetics of pressure-induced inactivation of Antarctic GDH displays an exponentially decreasing residual activity as a function of the incubation time, whereas the bovine enzyme shows a complex pattern of behaviour in the first 20 min of incubation, attributable to the transient formation of aggregates. The coenzyme NAD increases the stability of both enzymes. The activation volume calculated for the reaction catalysed under pressure by fish GDH is higher than that of the bovine enzyme. These results indicate that the molecular properties of fish and bovine GDH are affected differently by hydrostatic pressure. A common mode of inactivation under extreme conditions of pressure and temperature of the cold-adapted Antarctic fish and mesophilic bovine GDH is deduced and discussed.

Notes: Abstract When the proper stimuli are given, somatic plant cells may form adventitious embryos, roots or shoots. The three pathways of regeneration show apparent similarities. They consist of three analogous phases: 1) dedifferentiation (during which the tissue becomes competent to respond to the organogenic/embryogenic stimulus), 2) induction (during which cells become determined to form either a root, a shoot or an embryo), and 3) realization (outgrowth to an organ or an embryo). The first phase may involve a period of callus growth (indirect regeneration), but often cells present in the explant become competent without cell division or without cell division at a large scale (direct regeneration). In an explant, only very few cells show the organogenic/embryogenic response. In direct regeneration, the three regenerative pathways start from cells in different tissues. This is most obvious when the different types of regeneration occur in the same explant. The hormonal trigger for the dedifferentiation phase is a general one, probably auxin. During the induction phase, each pathway requires specific hormonal triggers. During the realization phase, hormones should be absent or at low concentration. The successive steps in the regeneration process coincide with events on the molecular and biochemical levels, but so far no coherent picture has emerged. In particular during the early stages of regeneration, research on these levels is hampered by a technical problem, viz., the very low proportion of cells that participate in the process of regeneration. New methods may overcome this problem.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary With the aid of an errorbound-arithmetic bounds are computer for the minimum and maximum of a polynomialP (x) in an interval [a, b]. The coefficients ofP (x) can be interval-numbers. To do this the zeros ofP′ (x) are enclosed in intervals whereP (x) is evaluated in a suitable manner. One gets the zeros ofP′ (x) by computing successively the zeros ofP (i−1) (x) untilP′ (x) beginning with a derivationP (i) (x) with,P (i) (x)≠o. Thereby one uses the fact that between two zeros ofP (l) (x) there is utmost one zero ofP (l−1) (x). The zeros are enclosed in intervals by means of the method of interval-halfing.
