Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung In Tabelle I geben die Verff. eine Liste der ihnen bekannten Tiefenbeben im östlichen Mittelmeer.
Notes: Summary In Table I the authors give a list of known deep-focus earthquakes in the eastern Mediterranean. Fig. 1 shows that their epicenters generally lie in the zones of active volcanoes, as in the regions surrounding the Pacific Ocean; however, their coincidence with positive gravity anomalies is less evident.

Notes: Summary Effects of low-velocity channels in the atmosphere, the ocean and the solid earth are discussed. There are two major low-velocity channels in the atmosphere, one with its axis at the tropopause, and another at a height of about 80 km. They produce “zones of silence” and permit the transmissions of waves involving the whole atmosphere. Low-velocity layers in the ocean result from the combined effects of temperature, pressure and salinity. In the earth, the sudden decrease of velocity at the boundary of the core produces a low-velocity at the boundary of the core produces a low-velocity channel for elastic waves. In the earth's crust there are two major low velocity shannels, one below theMohorovičić discontinuity, the other at a depth of about 15 Km. Misinterpretation of their effects has caused incorrect conclusions concerning the structure of the outer portion of the earth's mantle.

Notes: Abstract Roots of mountains are studied by use of gravimetric data, dispersion of surface waves, travel times of refracted and reflected body waves from earthquakes or artificial explosions. Under Southern and Central California, the thickness of the crust (depth of the Mohorovičić discontinuity) increases from about 20 km near the coast to 30–35 km under the lower valleys and to about 50 km under the Sierra Nevada. Near the Atlantic coast of the United States it increases from about 20 km under the shelf to about 30 km under the coast, 35 km under the Canadian Shield, and about 45 km under the southern Appalachians. In Western Europe it is about 25–30 km, seems to increase under the Central and Southern Alps to 45–50 km and possibly to 60 km under the Abruzzi. The thickness of the „granitic“ layer seems to be 25–30 km under Southern California and the Sierra Nevada, roughly 20 km under western Europe, but seems to increase to about 35 km under the Central and Southern Alps. Thus, the root under the Sierra Nevada is possibly mainly an effect of a thickening of the „basaltic“ layer, while under the Alps it results mainly from a thicker „granitic“ layer. This difference could result from different tectonic processes in the two regions during their late geological history. The local temperatures in the earth's crust can apparently greatly affect the depth at which phase changes occur and thus the thickness of the crust. Processes connected with reestablishment of isostatic equilibrium probably occur mainly below the crust.

Notes: Summary New data concerning the uplift in northern North America and in Fennoscandia are combined with earlier findings. The main quantities involved in the hypothesis of postglacial uplift are of the same order of magnitude for Fennoscandia and for the Great Lakes-Hudson Bay regions. Whereas the hypothesis of postglacial uplift is readily accepted for Fennoscandia, it has been rejected in several publications for the present uplift in North America, partly as a consequence of misinterpretation of data. Actually, it offers the best explanation by far for the uplift in both areas.
