    Notes: Abstract One hundred six strains of aerobic bacteria were isolated from the Fiora River which drains an area of cinnabar deposits in southern Tuscany, Italy. Thirty-seven of the strains grew on an agar medium containing 10μg/ml Hg (as HgCl2) with all of these strains producing elemental mercury. Seven of the 37 strains also degraded methylmercury. None of 106 sensitive and resistant strains produced detectable monomethylmercury although 15 strains produced a benzene-soluble mercury species. Two strains of alkylmercury (methyl-, ethyl- and phenylmercury) degrading bacteria were tested for the ability to degrade several other analogous organometals and organic compounds, but no activity was detected toward these compounds. Mercury methylation is not a mechanism of Hg resistance in aerobic bacteria from this environment. Growth of bacteria on the agar medium containing 10μg/ml HgCl2 was diagnostic for Hg detoxification based on reduction.

    Notes: Abstract A new method for the calibration of a superconducting gravity meter is described, in which a 273 Kg annular mass is placed around the meter and is moved up and down. The geometry of the apparatus is easy to model and the accuracy in the computation of the gravity variation induced by the mass, 6.7µgal, is limited only by the accuracy in the knowledge of value of the gravitational constant. Measurements done in ‘91 and ‘92 for the calibration of the instrument GWR-T015 are described. The calibration factor has been determined with a precision of about 0.3%.

    Notes: Abstract  A spontaneous recessive mutation named nackt (symbol: nkt) affecting hair growth and T-cell development was discovered in a moderately inbred stock of mice. Skin lesions were characterized by sparse rough coat, bare patches around the eyes and neck, and a scratching behavior throughout life. Fluorescence-activated cell sorter analysis indicated a deficiency in the CD4+ 8– T-cell subset in the thymus and a marked decrease in CD4+ T cells in peripheral lymphoid organs. Linkage analysis using a set of molecular markers and an F2 intersubspecific cross indicated that the mutation maps to the central region of mouse chromosome 13, in a region homologous to human chromosome 5q22-q35.

    Notes: Abstract Bioleaching of a pyrite ore containing high concentrations of cobalt (0.1%) and zinc (0.065%) was affected by small amounts of calcitic gangue (from 0.01 to 1.01%). Results from an air-lift percolator and from Erlenmeyer flask experiments show that a small percentage of calcite raises the pH and arrests the growth of the acidophilic bacterium Thiobacillus ferrooxidans. In percolator experiments, when calcite is completely removed by the continuous addition of small quantities of acid, and the pH of the liquor becomes acid, the micro-organism begins to grow and to bio-oxidize the pyrite ore. The growth of T. ferrooxidans shows different lag phase spans (from 13 to 190 days) depending on carbonate dissolution. The metals Fe, Zn and Co are released into the leaching solution together at different rates after a lag-time which depends on calcite concentrations in pyrite gangue. Metal ratios in the mineral bulk are different from those in the liquor, Zn dissolving 5 times more readily than Co. Bioleaching rates for metal removal from pyrite are higher in percolator (for Fe, from 5 to 15 mg/l/h) than in flask experiments (from 0.5 to 2 mg/l/h), but the lag phases are shorter (from 2 to 65 days). The differences between the two systems are related to calcite dissolution and gypsum precipitation.

    Notes: Abstract A strain of broad-spectrum, mercury-resistant Pseudomonas putida FB1 was used to remove mercury as the gaseous element (Hg(0)) from a continuous axenic culture, fed with a synthetic medium containing 1 mg Hg l-1 as HgCl2. Mercury determinations were performed in steady-state cultures using various culture fractions [whole culture, filtered supernatant, bacterial cells (dry wt), recovery trap liquid] in order to determine the removal efficiency at different dilution rates (from 0.1 to 3.0 day-1). The removal efficiency ranged from 99.2% to 99.8%, and the residual Hg was maintained below 5 μ l-1 (the maximum allowable concentration of Hg in liquid wastes according to Italian law) at a dilution rate of 1.0 day-1, corresponding to a Hg flux of 40 μg l-1 h-1. Hg accumulation by cell biomass was negligible for dilution rates under 1.0 day-1. A progressive accumulation of Hg, both in the liquid phase and in cells, occurred at a higher dilution rate (3.0 day-1; close to washout), corresponding to a Hg concentration of 25 μg g-1 (dry wt). The estimated Km and Vmax for Hg reduction were 0.241 mg l-1 and 9.5 mg g-1 h-1, respectively. In batch experiments maximum Hg removal occurred at the optimum growth temperature (28°C) of P. putida. The maximum recovery of Hg in the liquid trap was 78%.

    Notes: Abstract Computational modeling is being used increasingly in neuroscience. In deriving such models, inference issues such as model selection, model complexity, and model comparison must be addressed constantly. In this article we present briefly the Bayesian approach to inference. Under a simple set of commonsense axioms, there exists essentially a unique way of reasoning under uncertainty by assigning a degree of confidence to any hypothesis or model, given the available data and prior information. Such degrees of confidence must obey all the rules governing probabilities and can be updated accordingly as more data becomes available. While the Bayesian methodology can be applied to any type of model, as an example we outline its use for an important, and increasingly standard, class of models in computational neuroscience—compartmental models of single neurons. Inference issues are particularly relevant for these models: their parameter spaces are typically very large, neurophysiological and neuroanatomical data are still sparse, and probabilistic aspects are often ignored. As a tutorial, we demonstrate the Bayesian approach on a class of one-compartment models with varying numbers of conductances. We then apply Bayesian methods on a compartmental model of a real neuron to determine the optimal amount of noise to add to the model to give it a level of spike time variability comparable to that found in the real cell.

    Notes: Abstract We investigate the properties of a model recently introduced by Heiligenberg (1987) for an array of sensors tuned to progressively higher ranges of a continuous stimulus variablex and with bell shaped single response curve with width parameterd. The main result is that asd increases, the overall response rapidly becomes almost linear in a very smooth and robust fashion. Biological relevance and implications of the model and of its extensions are discussed together with a few examples.

    Notes: Summary Liquid-liquid (LLE) and liquid-solid extraction (LSE) procedures were developed to identify polyphenols in phillyrea (Phillyrea angustifolia L.) leaves. The liquidsolid extraction, carried out by using two serial Bond-Elut® CH and Bond-Elut® SAX cartridges allowed the collection of both polyphenols and soluble carbohydrates during a single extraction of leaf. This method seems to be suitable for both phytochemical and physiological study of the species, allowing the identification of two classes of organic compounds which have a central role in the metabolism of phillyrea plants. A method of isolation and concentration of polyphenols for further molecular characterization, using centrifuge chromatography, was also developed. Molecular characterization, carried out by UV-Vis spectrophotometry and mass spectrometry, demonstrated the presence of compounds with interesting biological activity, i.e. flavonoids and oleuropein derivatives. The soluble carbohydrate composition of phillyrea leaves did not substantially differ from that ofOlea europaea L. leaves, except for a higher mannitol/glucose ratio. This carbohydrate distribution may be linked to the evolution pattern of this species which usually grows in severely stressed environments.

    Notes: Abstract Active networks are receiving increasing attention due to their promise of great flexibility in tailoring services to applications. This capability stems from the exploitation of network devices whose behaviour can be changed dynamically by applications, possibly using technologies and architectures originally conceived for mobile code systems. Notwithstanding the promise of active networks, real-world applications that clearly benefit by them are still missing. In this paper we describe the design of a videoconference system conceived expressly for operation over active networks. The goal of this activity is to pinpoint the benefits that mobile code and active networks bring to this application domain and to provide isnights for the exploitation of these concepts in other application domains.
