    Notes: Abstract. Pseudomonas putida CSV86, a soil bacterium, grows on 1- and 2-methylnaphthalene as the sole source of carbon and energy. In order to deduce the pathways for the biodegradation of 1- and 2-methylnaphthalene, metabolites were isolated from the spent medium and purified by thin layer chromatography. Emphasis has been placed on the structural characterisation of isolated intermediates by GC-MS, demonstration of enzyme activities in the cell free extracts and measurement of oxygen uptake by whole cells in the presence of various probable metabolic intermediates. The data obtained from such a study suggest the possibility of occurrence of multiple pathways in the degradation of 1- and 2-methylnaphthalene. We propose that, in one of the pathways, the aromatic ring adjacent to the one bearing the methyl moiety is oxidized leading to the formation of methylsalicylates and methylcatechols. In another pathway the methyl side chain is hydroxylated to –CH2-OH which is further converted to –CHO and –COOH resulting in the formation of naphthoic acid as the end product. In addition to this, 2-hydroxymethylnaphthalene formed by the hydroxylation of the methyl group of 2-methylnaphthalene undergoes aromatic ring hydroxylation. The resultant dihydrodiol is further oxidised by a series of enzyme catalysed reactions to form 4-hydroxymethyl catechol as the end product of the pathway.

The resultant diol was oxidized via 3-formyl salicylate, 2-hydroxyisophthalate, salicylate and catechol to TCA cycle intermediates.

    Notes: Abstract For a subsetS, let the descent statistic β(S) be the number of permutations that have descent setS. We study inequalities between the descent statistics of subsets. Each subset (and its complement) is encoded by a list containing the lengths of the runs. We define two preorders that compare different lists based on the descent statistic. Using these preorders, we obtain a complete order on lists of the form (k i ,P,k n−i , whereP is a palindrome, whose first entry is larger thank. We prove a conjecture due to Gessel, which determines the list that maximizes the descent statistic, among lists of a given size and given length. We also have a generalization of the boustrophedon transform of Millar, Sloane and Young.

    Description / Table of Contents: Riassunto Si fanno calcoli autoconsistenti e nonlineari della schermatura per l’idrogeno e il μ+ nel gellio, usando il formalismo funzionale per la densità di Hohenberg-Kohn e Kohn-Sham. La prescrizione di Blatt è usata per incorporare l’effetto dimensionale. Non si trova nessuno stato legato per H e μ+ nelle densità elettroniche corrispondenti a matrici di Al, Mg e Cu, e ciò è in accordo con le informazioni sperimentali sul μ+. Le cariche protoniche nette risultano essere 0.40e, 0.42e e 0.49e e le cariche muoniche nette 0.34e, 0.35e e 0.46e in matrici di Al, Mg e Cu, rispettivamente, in accordo con i calcoli precedenti. La resistività risidua calcolata per il sistema Cu−H risulta essere in buon accordo con il valore sperimentale.
    Notes: Summary The self-consistent, nonlinear screening calculations for hydrogen and μ+ in jellium are carried out by using the Hohenberg-Kohn and Kohn-Sham density functional formalism. The Blatt prescription is used to incorporate the size effect. No bound states are found for H and μ+ in the electronic densities corresponding to Al, Mg and Cu matrices, which is in agreement with experimental information on μ+. The net protonic charges are found to be 0.40e, 0.42e and 0.49e and net muonic charges are 0.34e, 0.35e and 0.46e in Al, Mg and Cu matrices, respectively, which are in agreement with earlier calculations. The calculated residual resistivity for the Cu−H system is found in good agreement with the experimental value.

    Notes: Abstract Orbiter ion mass spectrometer measurements, as available in the UADS data files are used to study the response of dayside Venus ions at various altitudes to solar wind dynamic pressure, P sw. Ion densities below about 200 km are not affected by changes in P sw. At altitudes above 200 km the ions get abruptly depleted with increase in P sw, and this abrupt depletion occurs at lower altitudes when P sw is high. At lower P sw, the depletion occurs at higher altitudes. The effect is similar for all ions. These results are also compared with the empirical relationship observed by Brace et al. (1980) between the ionopause altitude and P sw from electron density measurements on orbiter electron temperature probe.

    Notes: Abstract Pseudoconvexity of a function on one set with respect to some other set is defined and duality theorems are proved for nonlinear programming problems by assuming a certain kind of convexity property for a particular linear combination of functions involved in the problem rather than assuming the convexity property for the individual functions as is usually done. This approach generalizes some of the well-known duality theorems and gives some additional strict converse duality theorems which are not comparable with the earlier duality results of this type. Further it is shown that the duality theory for nonlinear fractional programming problems follows as a particular case of the results established here.
