Notes: Abstract Plasma and magnetic field signatures from 29 November 1990 indicate that the Ulysses spacecraft passed through a series of interplanetary structures that were most likely formed by magnetic reconnection on open field lines ahead of a coronal mass ejection (CME). This reconnection changed the magnetic topology of the upstream region by converting normal open interplanetary magnetic field into a pair of regions: one magnetically disconnected from the Sun and the other, a tongue, connected back to the Sun at both ends. This process provides a new method for producing both heat flux dropouts and counterstreaming suprathermal electron signatures in interplanetary space. In this paper we expand upon the 29 November case study and argue that reconnection ahead of CMEs should be less common at high heliolatitudes.

Notes: Abstract The overall multi-layer structure of the magnetic field profile observed by Ulysses across a broad solar wind tangential discontinuity can be reproduced fairly well by means of a kinetic model. Such a simulation provides complementary information about the velocity distribution functions, which are not always available from the plasma experiment due to the low time resolution inherent in plasma measurements. The success of such a simulation proves that the kinetic model can be used as a realistic basis for further studies of the structure and stability of solar wind tangential discontinuities.

Notes: Abstract The photoconductive response of an ORP10 InSb detector has been found to be dependent on the cube root of illuminating intensity for high levels of irradiation at 5.3 μm. The limiting power for a linear response (∼1 W) is consistent with the predictions of a theory developed by Moss for a high mobility semiconductor.

Notes: Abstract Refractive index versus composition data are presented for three silica based binary glass systems SiO2-B2O3, SiO2-P2O5 and SiO2-GeO2. Using a near-field scanning method refractive index measurements were made on graded-index optical fibres, of known composition, fabricated by the chemical vapour deposition technique. The experimental data for each glass system is also compared with theoretical predictions of refractive index versus composition made from a single oscillator, Sellmeier model involving an oscillator energy and a dispersion energy term.

Notes: Abstract A composition-dependent single Sellmeier oscillator model, developed for predicting the refractive index against composition behaviour for the three binary glass systems, SiO2-B2O3, SiO2-P2O5 and SiO2-GeO2, is extended to a double Sellmeier oscillator model. The inclusion of both composition-dependent u.v. and i.r. terms in the Sellmeier equation has enabled the wavelength dispersive properties of optical glass fibres; refractive index, material dispersion and profile dispersion, to be computed for any composition, in any one of these three binary glasses. Theoretical calculations, for particular compositions, of material and profile dispersions are compared with experimental measurements on fibres of the same compositions, fabricated by chemical vapour deposition.

Notes: Abstract Optical rectification in single crystals of tellurium produced by infra-red radiation at 10.6 μm has been observed. The value of ¦χ0 111¦ is found to be 0.9×10−6 esu. Preliminary experiments to test the usefulness of the effect to monitor mode-locked infra-red laser pulses have been inconclusive.

Notes: Abstract The superplastic deformation properties, i.e. flow scenes and stain rate sensitivities, of the commercial alloy Ti-4% Al-4% Mo-2% Sn-0.5% Si (IMI55O) have been assessed in the temperature range 805 to 915° C and for different initial microstructures. Fine grainedα +β microstructures showed superplastic properties at temperatures above 850° C and grain coarsening, which led to increases in flow stresses and e reduction in superplastic properties, was only pronounced at the higher temperatures. In transformedβ microstructures the method of strain rate cycling led to a breakdown of the acicularα platelets end the development of an equiaxed α +β microstructure. At the same time the flow stresses at low strain rates decreased and the strain rate sensitivities increased. Light and electron microscopy showed that theβ-phase became the continuous or matrix phase even at volume fractions below 50% (i.e. at the lower deformation temperatures) and that molybdenum segregation at the longitudinal interphase boundaries (parallel to the tensile axis) occurred. The results suggest that there is a strain distribution between theα-phase and the α-phase, theβ-phase effectively behaving as a deforming mantle around theα grains.

Notes: Abstract Quartz particles from the Norwegian Lodalen clay and the Canadian St Jean Vianney clay have been examined by electron microscopy. The high-voltage electron microscope in particular allows the internal structure and the surface nature to be examined. Dislocation networks have been observed in the quartz particles and also Moiré patterns suggesting regions of structural deformation. The particles have a plate-like shape with a habit plane parallel to the basal plane which suggests that at small particle sizes (∼3 μm) a cleavage mechanism may operate in quartz. The edges of the particles appear to be heavily deformed and cracking fragmentation is apparent which may correspond to the deformed lattice region of Lidstrom. The observations cast some light on the origin of the sensitivity of the strength of such clays to disturbance.
