    Notizen: The quantum mechanical transition between a free particle Lagrangian and the Klein–Gordon field description of a free particle (particle-wave duality) is conjectured to extend to an analogous construction of relativistically invariant wave equations associated with strings and branes. Electromagnetic interactions in the two systems are discussed. It is emphasized that all integrable free field theories, including those of Dirac–Born–Infeld type, are associated with Lagrangians equivalent to divergences on the space of solutions of the equations of motion. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: Abstract A selective survey is given of convergence results for sequences of Padé approximants. Various approaches for dealing with the convergence problems due to `defects" are discussed. Attention is drawn to the close relationship between analyticity properties of a function and the `smoothness" of its Taylor series coefficients. A new theorem on the convergence of horizontal sequences of Padé approximants to functions in the Baker–Gammel–Wills conjecture function class is presented.

    Notizen: Abstract For any odd integern ≥3 and prime powerq, it is known thatPG(n−1, q2) can be partitioned into pairwise disjoint subgeometries isomorphic toPG(n−1, q) by taking point orbits under an appropriate subgroup of a Singer cycle ofPG(n−1, q2). In this paper, we construct Baer subgeometry partitions of these spaces which do not arise in the classical manner. We further illustrate some of the connections between Baer subgeometry partitions and several other areas of combinatorial interest, most notably projective sets and flagtransitive translation planes.

In this paper, we prove a conjecture of Coleman, Kaskel, and Ribet about the ℚ-valued points of the modular curve X 0(N) which map to torsion points on J 0(N) via the cuspidal embedding. We give some generalizations to other modular curves, and to noncuspidal embeddings of X 0(N) into J 0(N).

    Notizen: Abstract The classification of perfectBaer subplane partitions of PG(2, q2) is equivalentto the classification of 3-dimensional flag-transitive planeswhose translation complements contain a linear cyclic group actingregularly on the line at infinity. Since all known flag-transitiveplanes admit a translation complement containing a linear cyclicsubgroup which either acts regularly on the points of the lineat infinity or has two orbits of equal size on these points,such a classification would be a significant step towards theclassification of all 3-dimensional flag-transitive planes. Usinglinearized polynomials, a parametric enumeration of all perfectBaer subplane partitions for odd q is described.Moreover, a cyclotomic conjecture is given, verified by computerfor odd prime powers q 〈 200, whose truth would implythat all perfect Baer subplane partitions arise from a constructionof Kantor and hence the corresponding flag-transitive planesare all known.
