Notes: Abstract The effects of a combination regimen of metoprolol and β1-adrenoceptor agonist denopamine on resting and exercise heart rate have been studied in 10 normal volunteers. Maximal ramp upright bicycle exercise was performed three times at 1-week intervals. Two hours before each exercise test, 5 mg metoprolol plus 20 mg denopamine, 5 mg metoprolol plus a denopamine placebo, or two placebos were orally administered in a double-blind fashion. During exercise after placebo administration, heart rate increased in parallel with the exercise intensity. Compared to the placebo values, resting heart rate was significantly decreased by an average of 10 beats · min−1 by 5 mg metoprolol, whereas it was not altered by the combination regimen. During exercise, however, both the combination regimen and metoprolol alone showed a significant negative chronotropic effect, decreasing peak exercise heart rate by an average of 14 and 21 beats · min−1, respectively. Peak oxygen uptake was also significantly decreased by both regimens. We conclude that concomitant administration of 5 mg metoprolol and 20 mg denopamine exerts an effective β-adrenoceptor blocking action during exercise but a minimal effect at rest in normal subjects. The combination regimen appears to have a favourable pharmacological profile for β-adrenoceptor blocker therapy in patients with chronic heart failure.

Notes: Abstract High quality oxide and fluoride single crystals for optical, piezoelectric and other applications have been grown by advanced crystal growth techniques. La3Nb0.5Ga5.5O14 and La3Ta0.5Ga5.5O14 piezoelectric single crystals of size and quality comparable to La3Ga5SiO14 (langasite), have been produced. The piezoelectric and device properties of the crystals were investigated. A search for new langasite-type materials was also performed. Growth conditions of (La,Sr)(Al,Ta)O3 and Ca8La2(PO4)6O2 single crystals are discussed. These crystals have excellent lattice matching with GaN, a promising material for optoelectronic devices. Promising optical micro-crystals—K3Li2Nb5O15, KNbO3 and Y3Al5O12—and new structural materials, Al2O3Y3Al5O12 eutectic fibers, have been grown by the micro-pulling-down (μ-PD) technique. The advantages of the μ-PD technique have been shown. Ce-doped fluoride single crystals—LiCaAlF6, LiYF4 and BaLiF3—have been grown for solid state UV laser applications. Growth results and optical characterizations are discussed.

Notes: Abstract Venturia nashicola isolates with a high level of resistance to carbendazim showed either increased sensitivity or were resistant to theN-phenylformamidoxime compoundN-(3,5-dichloro-4-propynyloyphenyl)-N′-methoxyformamidine (DCPF). Isolates with an intermediate or low level of carbendazim resistance were resistant to DCPF. Increased sensitivity to DCPF was also associated with a high level of carbendazim resistance inBotrytis cinerea but not with a moderate resistance level. Increased sensitivity to DCPF was not observed in carbendazim resistant isolates ofGibberella fujikuroi. Binding of [14C]DCPF in cell-free mycelial extracts of the highly carbendazim-resistant and DCPF-sensitive isolate ofV. nashicola was higher than in those of DCPF-resistant isolates that were either highly-resistant, intermediately resistant, or weakly resistant to carbendazim or were sensitive to carbendazim. [14C]carbendazim binding in extracts of highly carbendazim-resistant isolates ofB. cinerea was lower than that in extracts of sensitive isolates, whereas [14C]DCFP binding was higher. A decreased [14C]carbendazim binding was also observed in extracts of carbendazim-resistant isolates ofG. fujikuroi, binding of [14C]DCPF, however, was similar in extracts of both carbendazim-resistant and sensitive isolates.

Notes: Arachis hypogaea L.) in tropical and subtropical areas. The aims of this study were (i) to evaluate three genotypes (ICG 1236, ICGS 44, and Chico) of groundnut for their heat acclimation potential (HAP), and (ii) to examine whether the growth, yield, and photosynthetic responses of these genotypes to temperature related to the HAP. We defined HAP as the change in leaf heat tolerance based on plasmalemma thermostability at 40 to 60°C measured by electrolyte leakage after acclimation at 35/30°C day/night temperature. Initially, plants were raised in a glasshouse maintained at 25/C day/night temperature. One half of the plants were shifted to another glasshouse maintained at 35/30°C after the appearance of the third leaf. Heat killing time (HKT), defined as the time required to cause 50% relative injury, indicated that the three genotypes acclimated to high temperature stress, with significant variations in HAP. All genotypes maintained greater vegetative growth and higher photosynthetic rates when grown under the higher temperature regime and genetic differences in photosynthetic rate were related to HKT. The higher temperature regime affected the reproductive growth adversely by increasing flower abortion and decreasing seed size, however. Differences in chlorophyll fluorescence and membrane thermostability between growth temperature were found only after incubating the leaf tissue at temperatures of 50°C or higher. Genetic differences in HAP were small and unrelated to growth differences.

Notes: Abstract The crystal structure of perovskite-type MgSiO3 has been studied up to 96 kbar, using a miniature diamondanvil pressure cell and by means of single-crystal four-circle diffractometry. The observed unit cell compression gives a bulk modulus of K o=2.47 Mbar, assuming K′o=4. The unit cell compression is controlled mainly by the tilting of SiO6 octahedra. The effect of pressure is to change Mg polyhedron towards 8-fold coordination rather than 12-fold coordination. The polyhedral bulk moduli of SiO6 and MgO8 are 3.8 Mbar and 1.9 Mbar, respectively.

Notes: Abstract Combining a miniature diamond-anvil pressure cell with a single crystal four-circle diffractometer, the crystal structure of a synthetic ZrO2 has been studied in situ up to 51 kbar at room temperature. The space group of the unquenchable orthorhombic high pressure phase is Pbcm. The directions of the b and c axes are preserved through the transition and the transformation is displacive. The coordination configurations of the Zr atoms and oxygen atoms are the same in the high pressure and low pressure phases. The orthorhombic high pressure phase has a higher entropy than that of low pressure monoclinic phase.

Notes: Abstract. To investigate whether common variants in the human genetic background are associated with pathogenesis of ischemic heart diseases, we systematically surveyed 41 possible candidate genes for single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) by directly sequencing 96 independent alleles at each locus, derived from 48 unrelated Japanese patients with myocardial infarction, including 25.8 kb 5' flanking regions, 56.8 kb exonic and 35.4 kb intronic sequences, and 1.8 kb 3' flanking regions. In this genomic DNA of nearly 120 kb, we identified 187 SNPs: 55 in 5' flanking regions, seven in 5' untranslated regions (UTRs), 52 in coding elements, 64 in introns, eight in 3' UTRs, and one in a 3' flanking region. Among the 52 coding SNPs, 26 were non-synonymous changes. Allelic frequencies of some of the polymorphisms were significantly different from those reported in European populations. For example, the Q506R substitution in the coagulation factor V gene, the so-called "Leiden mutation", has a reported frequency of 2.3% in Europeans, but we detected the Leiden mutation in none of the Japanese genomes that we investigated. The allelic frequencies of the –33A〉G SNP in the thrombomodulin gene were also very different; this allele occurred at a 12% frequency in the Japanese patients that we examined, although it had been detected in none of 82 Caucasians reported previously. These data support the hypothesis that some SNPs are specific to particular ethnic groups.

Notes: Abstract Tracer experiments on the chemical transformation of technetium in paddy soil and the transfer to rice seedlings have been carried out using 95mTc as a tracer. Two common Japanese soils, Andosol and Gray lowland soil were used in the soil incubation experiments. The chemical form of soluble Tc in soil water was a mixture of Tc-organic matter complex, Tc-iron complex and pertechnetate. An uptake experiment with rice seedlings using nutrient solution showed that the Tc-organic matter complex was less available than pertechnetate or the Tc-iron complex. These chemical forms of Tc were also observed in the root bleeding sap of rice seedlings when introduced to the nutrient solution containing soluble Tc. These results suggested that the transfer of technetium from soil to rice would depend on the chemical form of Tc and they would transport from the root to the leaf without chemical transformation.
