    Notes: Abstract A biolistic particle delivery system was used to genetically transform embryogenic tissue of Pinus radiata. The introduced DNA contained a uidA reporter gene under the control of either the tandem CaMV 35S or the artificial Emu promoter, and the npt II selectable marker controlled by the CaMV 35S promoter. The average number of stable, geneticin-resistant lines recovered was 0.5 per 200 mg fresh weight bombarded tissue. Expression of the uidA reporter gene was detected histochemically and fluorimetrically in transformed embryogenic tissue and in derived mature somatic embryos and regenerated plants. The integration of uidA and npt II genes into the Pinus radiata genome was demonstrated using PCR amplification of the inserts and Southern hybridisation analysis. The expression of both genes in transformed tissue was confirmed by Northern hybridisation analysis. More than 150 transgenic Pinus radiata plants were produced from 20 independent transformation experiments with four different embryogenic clones.

    Notes: Abstract Concentrations of 40 elements were determined in tissues and whole bodies of mussels (Bathymodiolus thermophilus) and/or whole bodies of limpets (Neomphalus fretterae) collected from the submarine thermal springs on the Galápagos Rift in 1977. Concentrations of Ag, As, Fe, Mn, Mo, Se, Sr, and Zn were comparable or elevated relative to those of intertidal mollusks, which have been utilized as indicators of anthropogenic trace-metal contamination. Both species contained concentrations of some elements (e.g. Ag, As, Fe, Mn, Mo, Se, Zn) which corresponded with the elevated levels of those elements discharged from hydrothermal vents. Many elements were most enriched in the gills and digestive glands of the mussels. Iron:manganese ratios of those tissues were similar to ratios of pelagic and transitional sediments, indicating that metal-rich suspended particulates had been absorbed onto mucous membranes. Comparisons with other benthopelagic organisms were precluded, since the present data represent essentially the only trace-element analyses of deep-sea macroinvertebrates.

    Notes: Summary A new aryl hydrazone structure with high insecticidal activity against the Australian sheep blowfly,Lucilia cuprina, was shown to have a higher activity as an uncoupler of oxidative phosphorylation in insect compared to mammalian mitochondrial preparations. This compound possesses the requirements of other uncouplers in its measured pKa and lipid solubility. However, when compared to a closely related structure with similar physicochemical properties, its insecticidal and insect mitochondrial uncoupling activities are greater and it exhibits decreased mammalian toxicity corresponding to this differential biochemical selectivity.

The levels of variation are typical of those found in other metazoan species. These polymorphisms are potentially useful for the identification of Africanized bees in the western hemisphere and for study of honeybee phylogenetics.

    Notes: Summary L-644,122 is a chemically stable vasodilator prostaglandin analogue. It is a selective renal vasodilator in dogs. The object of the present study was to determine whether it increases effective renal plasma flow (ERPF) in man. L-644,122 was administered intravenously to 4 healthy volunteers and by mouth to 4 mild hypertensives. It did not increase ERPF. Instead it acted as a non-specific vasodilator, lowering diastolic blood pressure and increasing heart rate. An unexpected increase in glomerular filtration rate (19% greater than placebo) after low dose intravenous L-644,122 merits further study.

    Notes: Abstract The influences of concave streamline curvature and bulk compression on a turbulent boundary layer in a supersonic flow were studied. The effects of curvature and compression were identified by comparing two flows with identical pressure distributions but different amounts of curvature. The effect of the pressure rise was to increase the wall stress and amplify the Reynolds stresses. The influence of curvature complemented the destabilizing effect of the compression, and the larger the curvature the greater the increase in the wall friction and Reynolds stresses in the boundary layer.

    Notes: Abstract A study was made of the wall pressure fluctuations in the reattachment region of a supersonic free shear layer. The free shear layer was formed by the separation of a Mach 2.9 turbulent boundary layer from a backward facing step. Reattachment occurred on a 20° ramp. By adjusting the position of the ramp, the base pressure at the step was set equal to the freestream pressure, and the free shear layer formed in the absence of any turning. An array of flush-mounted, miniature, high-frequency pressure transducers was used in the vicinity of the reattachment region to make multichannel measurements of the fluctuating wall pressure. Contrary to previous observations of this flow, the reattachment region was found to be highly unsteady, and the pressure fluctuations were found to be large. The overall behavior of the wall pressure loading is similar in scale and magnitude to the unsteadiness of the wall pressure field in compression ramp flows at the same Mach number. Rayleigh scattering was used to visualize the instantaneous shock structure in the streamwise and spanwise direction. Spanwise “wrinkles” on the order of half the boundary layer thickness were observed on the shock sheet.

    Notes: Abstract A simplified theory for the performance of a digital optical receiver is developed. The receiver sensitivity is calculated in terms of circuit parameters, received and equalized pulse shapes, photodiode parameters and bit-rate. An excellent agreement between this theory and a more complicated analysis by Personick [4] is demonstrated. It is shown that the receiver sensitivity may be improved by launching reduced-width pulses into the fibre, particularly if fibre bandwidth is a significant limitation. Reduced-width pulses bring benefits in source power consumption and lifetime, and in timing recovery.

    Notes: Abstract The effects of photodiode bulk leakage current and amplifier noise on receiver sensitivity are analysed using a model described previously [4]. The sensitivity of a receiver using a PIN photodiode can be greatly improved by employing a high-performance microwave FET in the input stage, to the point where its remaining technical disadvantage in comparison with a silicon APD receiver at 800–900 nm may be offset by economic and operational attractions. In systems operating at the optimum transmission wavelength beyond 1.1 μm, the PIN-FET hybrid receiver may offer better technical performance than an APD receiver.

    Notes: Abstract Seedlings of a susceptible inbred line of male-fertile corn were inoculated with conidia of Helminthosporium maydis race O. Histological and ultrastructural observations of mesophyll, bundle sheath and phloem were made over a period of 8 days. Histological observations at 1 day revealed that lesions were comprised of several dead mesophyll cells bordered by a pair of vascular bundles. By 3 days lesions had developed their characteristic appearance caused by mesophyll collapse and had increased to a width of 10–12 bundles. At the ultrastructural level, the first signs of mesophyll cell change were rupture of the tonoplast and swelling of the mitochondrial matrix followed by a disintegration of the cytoplasm and swelling of the chloroplast stroma. Following these changes the cytoplasm became filled with an electron dense material and the plasmalemma ruptured leaving only partial remnants of chloroplasts as recognizable organelles. All of these changes occurred by 1 day. Bundle sheath cells were more resistant and intact cells could be observed in 3-day-old lesions. Phloem showed signs of degeneration by 1 day with distortion of the sieve-tube element membranes and disintegration of the companion cell cytoplasm. By 4 days the phloem had disintegrated.
