Notizen: Abstract The thermal decomposition of wood wastes obtained from jack pine has been studied in both oxidising and inert atmospheres using thermogravimetric techniques supported by gaseous and residue product analysis. The effects of selected sequences of chemical additives on the reaction rate parameters of both native and extracted bark samples have also been examined. The maximum rate of wood waste pyrolysis is believed to be related to the rapid decomposition of the cellulose constituent, which occurs at around 350°C in nitrogen. In air, this value is shifted to around 300°C and may be explained by the intervention of exothermic reactions involving other wood constituents present in the complex wood matrix. The trend shown in the analytical results for the various wood waste residues was similar to that established by previous workers for the pyrolysis of coalification products on the basis of H/C and O/C ratios which proceed towards the carbonisation and oxidation poles, respectively, for residues obtained from heating in inert and oxidising atmospheres. Isothermal weight-change data were found to fit model kinetic expressions which indicate that the pyrolysis process may be transport-controlled.

Notizen: Abstract The pyrolysis of native jack pine bark has been studied from 200 to 340°C by thermogravimetric (TG), and isothermal weight-loss methods. The effects of particle size, solvent extraction and additions of zinc (II) and iron (III) chlorides on the pyrolysis behaviour have also been examined. The bark was characterized by infrared spectroscopy and low-temperature gas adsorption. Residues were analysed for CHN contents and structural changes which occurred on heating were examined by optical and scanning electron microscopy. The TG characteristics were not affected by solvent extraction or particle size variation while the metal chloride additions inhibited the loss of volatile materials from the bark probably by stabilizing chemical bonding in the bark components. Isothermal decomposition data were found to fit established kinetic expressions associated with inorganic decompositions. The physical mechanics of pyrolysis have been interpreted on the assumption that pyrolysis is initiated through the formation of planes of lateral strain which are sites for decomposition and which decrease in number inversely with time. It is suggested that these sites are produced by an oxidation mechanism which may be rate-controlling in the pyrolysis. This hypothesis is supported by the observation that the data fit a reaction rate compensation curve, often associated with oxidation processes but more generally with heterogeneous catalytic reactions. The compensation curve also relates the kinetic parameters found by other workers for a large variety of wood-derived materials.

Notizen: Abstract The nature of protein catabolism in a wide range of species of midwater zooplankton was investigated. The weight-specific ammonia excretion rates (μg NH3−N g−1 dry wt h−1, y) decline exponentially with minimum depth of occurreece (MDO, x), y=163.4 x−0.479±0.212 (95%ci) (CI=confidence interval), when temperature is held constant. The change in ammonia excretion can be partially explained by the decrease in percent protein (%P) with MDO, %P=80.17 MDO−0.148±0.122 (95%ci) The atomic O:N ratio of freshly caught zooplankters ranged from 9.1 to 91, with most measurements between 9 and 25. Detailed studies were carried out on the response of one of the species studied (Gnathophausia ingens) to starvation (28 d). After 14 d of starvation the average ammonia excretion rate declined by more than 75% to less than 1 μg NH3−N g−1 wet wt h−1, although the average oxygen consumption declined by only 13% within the first 7 d of starvation and then remained stable. This differential response of oxygen consumption and ammonia excretion to starvation resulted in an increase in the average O:N ratio of starved animals from an initial 33 to 165 after 21 d. The average O:N ratios of fed mysids remained below 38 during the experiment. G. ingens maintains a relatively uniform metabolic rate during starvation by relying more heavily on its large lipid stores than when being fed.

Notizen: Abstract Laboratory production during the life span of Euphausia pacifica was measured directly (as the sum of growth, molting and reproduction) and indirectly (as assimilation minus metabolism and leakage) to test the hypothesis that weight-specific production is a constant for all sizes. Euphausiids were collected in Puget Sound, Washington State, USA, from September 1973 to March 1978. Equations were determined (in terms of carbon and nitrogen at 8° and 12° C) expressing the relationships between body weight and the daily rates of growth, molting, reproduction, ingestion and metabolism. The allometric equation (R=aW b ) best related body weight (W) to the rate (R) for growth, molting, ingestion, respiration and excretion for life stages from late larvae through adults. As predicted by the original above hypothesis, the weight-specific coefficient (b) was close to 1.0 for ingestion and excretion; in contrast, b was 0.62 for growth, and 0.77 to 0.85 for molting and respiration. The Q10 s also varied: 3.5 for growth, 2.4 for molting, about 3.0 for ingestion, and 2.0 for respiration and excretion. Assimilation efficiencies, for all weights and at both temperatures, were 81.3% of carbon and 85.9% of nitrogen ingested. The relationships between rate and body weight of early larvae for growth and molting were linear, as was the relationship for reproduction in adults. Weight-specific production was higher by I to 2% at 12° than 8° C for all life stages, and was 2 to 4% for carbon and 2 to 6% for nitrogen in adults, but 13 to 17% for carbon and 14 to 15% for nitrogen in early furcilia larvae. The null hypothesis was rejected for production measured directly, but would have been accepted if only an indirect measurement of nitrogen production had been considered. Clearly, indirect measurement incorporates all errors of measurement and assumption and makes interpretation difficult.

Notizen: Abstract Complete carbon and nitrogen budgets at 8° and 12° C over the life span of Euphausia pacifica were constructed from data published in the foregoing publication. The relative magnitudes of physiological functions such as metabolism and growth for the different life history stages were compared. The carbon net growth efficiency (NGE) for E. pacifica increased to a maximum of 60 to 74% at Calyptopis 3 (a larval stage) and then decreased rapidly to a level of 10 to 12% for adults. The cumulative amount of assimilated carbon or nitrogen in reproductive products was equal to that in growth. The cumulative net production efficiency (tissue plus molts plus reproductive products) is 24 to 29%, and is slightly higher for nitrogen than for carbon. For juveniles and adults, the largest proportion (40 to 65%) of assimilated material is used in metabolism, and is about 10% higher at 8° than 12° C. The difference between measured and predicted ingestion (the sum of metabolism, leakage, defecation, growth, molting and reproduction) probably results from poorly understood aspects of zooplankton physiology (e.g. the effect of body weight on leakage). Nitrogen budgets at 8° C for furcilia bulanced the best, with deviations of less than 10%. In general, predicted ingestion was increasingly less than measured ingestion as body weight and temperature increased. Possible omissions or errors in assumptions or methods that may cause the imbalances are discussed.

Notizen: Abstract The spawning frequency of Euphausia superba was estimated from observations of egg production by live individual females in captivity on board ship. The females were collected during the austral summer of 1982 near the South Shetland Islands and Elephant Island, Antarctica. On the average, 15.6% of the females spawned each day, which indicates an interval between spawnings of 6.7 d. This evidence contradicts earlier descriptions of the spawning behavior of E. superba. The females appear to be continually producing eggs and releasing them periodically over the entire spawning season, and thus have much higher fecundities than previously estimated.

Notizen: Abstract Sinking rates of the embryos of Euphausia superba were measured during development in the laboratory at Palmer Station. Antarctic Peninsula, during austral summer 1982. Two densities of seawater were used in these experiments; the lower density (1.027 g cm-3) is characteristic of the upper 300 m of the water column, the higher (1.029 g cm-3) is characteristic of the deeper “circumpolar deep water”. During development, the eggs sank at an initial average rate of 175 m d-1, declining to 51 m d-1 during the gastrula to early limb bud stages and increasing before hatching to near initial rates. The larvae hatched within 6 d. We predict that the majority of the embryos of E. superba should hatch at a depth of about 850 m.

Notizen: Summary MaleChoristoneura fumiferana are disrupted by atmospherically permeating any blend of the 2 sex pheromone components. The mechanisms of disruption and attraction are different and appear to result from decisions in the brain based on chemical and physical characteristics of the air and pheromone plumes surrounding a pheromone source.
