Notes: Abstract In this paper we present efficient methods to approximate nearly singular surface integrals arising massively when discretizing boundary integral equations via the collocation method. The idea is to introduce local polar coordinates centred at a corner of the triangle. Thus it is possible to perform the inner integration analytically, where either the corresponding formulae can be evaluated numerically stable or can be replaced by simple (rational) approximation quite efficiently. We show that the outer integration can be performed by simple Gauß-Legendre quadrature and how to adapt the order of the Gauß formulae to a required order of consistency. Numerical tests will emphasize the efficiency of our method.

Notes: Abstract We present a new version of the panel clustering method for a sparse representation of boundary integral equations. Instead of applying the algorithm separately for each matrix row (as in the classical version of the algorithm) we employ more general block partitionings. Furthermore, a variable order of approximation is used depending on the size of blocks. We apply this algorithm to a second kind Fredholm integral equation and show that the complexity of the method only depends linearly on the number, say n, of unknowns. The complexity of the classical matrix oriented approach is O(n 2) while, for the classical panel clustering algorithm, it is O(nlog7 n).

Notes: Abstract The polarization of the recoil proton in πN-scattering has been calculated as a function of the scattering angle at the energies 150, 170, 190 MeV. It is shown that this polarization depends sensitively on the πN-scattering phase-shiftP 11. Slight changes of the other phase-shifts do not affect the polarization to the same extent. New measurements of the differential cross-section and of the polarization in the process π−+p→π−+p are suggested. They would allow for a new precise phase-shift analysis, which could possibly determine the sign of theP 11-phase at the inelastic threshold. This sign is important in connection with the bound-state picture of the nucleon.

Notes: Abstract The wellknown derivation ofFresnel's formula for the reflection coefficient of a metal surface in the case of an oblique incident wave polarized parallel to the plane of incidence includes a mistake concerning the boundary conditions and neglecting the possibility of optical excitation of plasma waves. The right formula for this case is derived in the following paper byForstmann. The discussion of an approximate formula obtained by a simplified method leads in the case of vanishing reflectivity forΩ〉Ω p to a real Brewster-angleα B . ForΩ〈Ω p there exists another solution with a complex Brewster-angle, representing a surface wave in form of a Zenneck-wave. For large wave numbers and for light velocity ≫ electron velocity the dispersion formula for these surface waves is nearly identical with that obtained byRitchie andWagner, while for small wave numbers there is a great difference between these two formulas. In the middle region the frequenceΩ is nearlyΩ p /√2.

Notes: Abstract For the so-called “conditioned” distribution functions, derived from the distribution functions used in the BBGKY-hierarchy, a certain ansatz is made, the consequences of which are investigated. As an application a simple example is discussed, namely the problem of the charge distribution around an ionized particle in presence of an external electrical field.

Notes: Abstract The hyperfine structure of the lowest1P1 state of25Mg,43Ca,87Sr,135Ba and137Ba have been measured by the level-crossing and anticrossing technique. The magnetic dipole and electric quadrupole coupling constants determined by these measurements are25Mg(3s3p1P1):A=− 7.7(5) MHz; 16 MHz〉B〉0 MHz,43Ca(4s4p1P1):A=− 15.3(4) MHz; ¦B¦〈12 MHz,87Sr (5s5p1P1:A=− 3.4(4) MHz;B=39(4) MHz,135Ba(6s6p1P1):A=− 97.5(1.0) MHz;B=31(9)MHz,137Ba(6s6p1P1):A=−109.2(1.2) MHz;B=51(12)MHz. The results have been compared with the predictions of the Breit-Wills theory of the two-electron hyperfine structure using the experimental data on the3P states. Large discrepancies have been observed which are due to different radial wave functions of thes andp electron in the triplet and singlet system. This effect has been taken into account by fitting the data with the aid of two additional parameters. That this procedure is justified is shown by an analysis of the fine structure splitting, the life times, and the isotopic shifts in thesp configurations of group II elements.
