    Notes: Elicitors are molecules known to trigger plant defence responses against pathogens. In a search for new sources of eliciting compounds from marine algae, an extract was prepared from green algae, Ulva spp., and its elicitor activity was established on the model legume, Medicago truncatula. When infiltrated into plant tissues or sprayed onto the leaves, this extract induced the expression of the defence-related marker gene PR10 without provoking necrosis. Spraying a solution at 500 µg mL−1 was sufficient to obtain maximum induction of PR10 after 2 d. Using a cDNA array enriched in genes potentially involved in plant defence, the expression of 152 genes was monitored after one or two consecutive treatments. A broad range of defence-related transcripts was found to be up-regulated, notably genes involved in the biosynthesis of phytoalexins, pathogenesis-related proteins and cell wall proteins. In contrast, the expression of primary metabolism-related genes did not change significantly. Consistent with its effect on defence gene expression, it was found that prior treatment of M. truncatula with the Ulva extract protected the plants against subsequent infection by the pathogenic fungus Colletotrichum trifolii.

    Notes: Abstract Highly dispersed electrocatalytic materials were obtained by vacuum deposition of catalytic metals on electromechanically suspended graphite powder particles. Graphite electrodes, vacuum-deposited with various metals (Ni, Pt, Au, Pd, Rh) or an alloy (Cu-Al), were bonded with an inorganic polymer, LaPO4. A.c. impedance and steady-state polarization methods were used to investigate the mechanism and kinetics of the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in 1m KOH at 25°C for Pt/C, Pd/C and Rh/C electrodes. It was concluded that the HER follows a Volmer-Heyrovsky mechanism.

    Notes: Abstract: We study the collective behavior of inclusions inducing local anisotropic curvatures in a flexible fluid membrane. The N-body interaction energy for general anisotropic inclusions is calculated explicitly, including multi-body interactions. Long-range attractive interactions between inclusions are found to be sufficiently strong to induce aggregation. Monte Carlo simulations show a transition from compact clusters to aggregation on lines or circles. These results might be relevant to proteins in biological membranes or colloidal particles bound to surfactant membranes.

    Notes: Abstract Feeding rates, patterns of prey selection, and starvation tolerance were investigated for adult males and females of the cyclopoid copepod Corycaeus anglicus collected from the waters of Friday Harbor, Washington, USA. Selection by C. anglicus was determined largely by prey body-size, but was also affected by species and developmental stage. Small developmental stages of all prey species were fed upon at relatively low rates. The small calanoid species Acartia clausii was increasingly vulnerable to predation by C. anglicus as it progressed through successive developmental stages. Larger prey species, Pseudocalanus sp. and Calanus pacificus, were more vulnerable in intermediate stages, the C3 and N6 stages, respectively. Larger and smaller prey were characteristically attacked at different sites on their bodies; however, attack sites fell within a similar range of body widths, 130 to 170 μm. Males of Corycaeus anglicus killed a maximum of 1.4 prey d-1 when feeding on the optimally-sized adult females of Acartia clausii, which are approximately equivalent to its own body length. Males fed at approximately double the rates of females. Despite its small size and apparent lack of metabolic stores, this cyclopoid is highly tolerant of starvation conditions. Median survival time without food is at least 2 wk for both males and females. In its predatory behavior, C. anglicus employs an ambush-type strategy and seems to be adapted for infrequent encounters with relatively large prey.

    Notes: Abstract A method of image enhancement and real-time input of 3-D, microscopic phase objects into a coherent optical pattern recognition system is described. The method consists of directing a low-power laser beam into a microscope objective to produce a real, magnified, coherent image of the specimen under test. The image plane is followed by two successive Fourier transform (FT) planes. In the first FT plane, low and high frequency spatial filters, one of which is photographically produced, are used as pre-processing filters to enhance the image quality. The enhanced signal is imaged from the first FT plane to the second FT plane which contains a matched spatial filter used for specimen identification. The system does not require an expensive incoherent-to-coherent light transducer and in addition, is capable of utilizing both phase and amplitude information from 3-D objects. Examples of results are given.

    Notes: Abstract: We study, by coarse-graining methods, the dependence of the nematic anchoring energy on the scale at which the orientation of the nematic director is resolved. We obtain a relationship allowing to compare anchoring measurements with different resolutions performed on the same nematic-substrate system. Our theory also permits to calculate the effective macroscopic anchoring corresponding to a given micro-fabricated surface aligning pattern, and to determine the limitations of this effective description.

    Notes: Abstract Graphite powder electrodes bonded by polymerized LaPO4 have been investigated for the first time by atomic force microscopy (AFM). The interest in investigating this material stems from the fact that graphite electrodes intercalated, or not, with various metals and bonded with LaPO4 have shown very good mechanical and electrochemical stability during the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in 1 M KOH aqueous solutions. Examination of their surfaces by scanning electron microscopy has revealed that these electrodes are very porous. AFM furnishes additional data about the surface and can therefore be considered a powerful tool for surface characterization.

    Notes: Abstract  In transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSE), such as scrapie in animals and Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in humans, the central event is the conversion of a host-encoded amyloidogenic protein (PrPc) into an abnormal isoform (PrPsc) that accumulates as amyloid in TSE brain. PrPc is a membrane sialoglycoprotein synthesized in the central nervous system and elsewhere. We have examined the ultrastructural localization of PrPc in numerous hamster and some human extracerebral tissues, by means of a post-embedding electron-microscopic method combined with immunogold labeling. In stomach, intestine, lung, and kidney from hamsters, and in stomach, kidney, and spleen from humans, immunogold labeling specific for PrPc is observed on various cellular substructures related to secretory pathways: Golgi apparatus, secretory globules, and plasma membrane. In mucous epithelial cells of stomach and intestine, PrPc appears to be concentrated in secretory globules, suggesting a role for PrPc in the secretory function of the digestive tract. The secretory aspect of PrPc may be a key to understanding the physiopathological mechanisms underlying TSE.

    Notes: Summary A capillary GC/MS method is presented for the analysis of iprodione (CAS registry number 36734-19-7) in chicory and in leek. Preliminary extraction was carried out using methanol, and the extracts were cleaned up using two liquid-liquid extractions and Bakerbond SPE Florisil® cartridges. The eluates were evaporated to dryness under reduced pressure, and the residues dissolved in hexane. Iprodione was then monitored by capillary Gas Chromatography, with Mass Spectrometric Detection, in the selective ion mode at m/z 314. Recoveries of 89% to 108% were obtained for chicory and leek fortified at 100 and 500 μg kg−1. The proposed method of analysis has a detection limit of 2 μg kg−1 for chicory and 4 μg kg−1 for leek.
