Notes: Summary A computerized quantitative technique was used to analyze the distribution of ferritininsulin receptor sites on rat adipocytes and the effects of cytochalasin B on groups of receptor sites. Computer analysis of separation distances between receptor sites established that insulin receptor sites on adipocytes did not have a random distribution but have a distinct tendency to exist in groups with a maximum separation distance between particles of 400 Å. A peak in the distribution of separation distances occurred at 100–200 Å. Cytochalasin B, but not cytochalasin D, treatment of adipocytes resulted in a decrease in the number of large groups of receptor sites and a corresponding increase in single and paired receptor sites without affecting the separation distance between the remaining grouped receptors. This suggested that when cytochalasin B disrupted the bond holding receptor sites together, it caused complete disruption. These observations provided additional information on the ultrastructural characteristics of the insulin receptor. Further application of these techniques to the analysis of insulin receptors may provide the necessary structural correlates to the biochemically observed differences in insulin action in other tissues and diseased states.

Notes: Abstract In late 1981 Federal workplace safety officers, and those of several states, began on-site checks of plants' injury records to determine which establishments to inspect. Critics claim incentives for underreporting were thus created, and that published injury rates could be biased downward. Because the records-check procedure is not applied in all states or industries, this research (using four different statistical models) compares pre- to post-1981 changes in reported injury rates across states and industries. Data on 3059 uninspected plants suggests a 5–14% decline (cet. par.) in reported rates among plants potentially subject to the records-check procedure.

Notes: Abstract In situ satellite observations of type III burst exciters at 1 AU show that the beam does not evolve into a plateau in velocity space, contrary to the prediction quasilinear theory. The observations can be explained by a theory that includes mode coupling effects due to excitation of the parametric oscillating two-stream instability and its saturation by anomalous resistivity. The time evolution of the beam velocity distribution is included in the analysis.

Notes: Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco] plantation growing with volunteer red alder (Alnus rubra Bong.). Ten years earlier, the preceding mature conifer stand was clearcut and nearly all logging slash and forest floor were consumed by slash fire. Forest floor mass in the 9-yr-old plantation averaged 9.86 Mg ha-1, with 3.71 Mg C, 98.0 kg N, 10.6 kg P, and 8.4 kg S ha-1. Mineral soils to 1-m depth averaged 176 Mg C, 8330 kg N, 3340 kg P, and 605 kg S ha-1 in the 〈2-mm fraction. The 2- to 〈6-mm soils fraction averaged an additional 100 Mg C, 4480 kg N, and 1700 kg P ha-1. Net mineralizable N as NH4 (anaerobic N mineralization index) totaled 99 kg N ha-1 in the top 45 cm of the mineral soil and 62 kg N ha-1 in the 45- to 100-cm depth. Density fractionation showed that the light fraction (〈1.65 Mg m-3 ) was only 13.4% of the fine soil mass of the 0- to 15- cm depth, yet contained about 40% of the total C and N capital in the 〈2-mm size fraction. The substantial amounts of C and nutrients in this low-bulk density soil (〈2-mm fraction, 0.30 Mg m-3) indicate a fertile soil despite large previous losses of organic matter and N from the site.

Notes: Abstract The definition of random polytope adopted in this paper restricts consideration to those probability measures satisfying two properties. First, the measure must induce an absolutely continuous distribution over the positions of the bounding hyperplanes of the random polytope; and second, it must result in every point in the space being equally as likely as any other point of lying within the random polytope. An efficient Monte Carlo method for their computer generation is presented together with analytical formulas characterizing their aggregate properties. In particular, it is shown that the expected number of extreme points for such random polytopes increases monotonically in the number of constraints to the limiting case of a polytope topologically equivalent to a hypercube. The implied upper bound of 2 n wheren is the dimensionality of the space is significantly less than McMullen's attainable bound on the maximal number of vertices even for a moderate number of constraints.

Notes: Abstract There has been increasing attention recently on average case algorithmic performance measures since worst case measures can be qualitatively quite different. An important characteristic of a linear program, relating to Simplex Method performance, is the number of vertices of the feasible region. We show 2 n to be an upper bound on the mean number of extreme points of a randomly generated feasible region with arbitrary probability distributions on the constraint matrix and right hand side vector. The only assumption made is that inequality directions are chosen independently in accordance with a series of independent fair coin tosses.

Notes: Abstract We consider the class of linear programs with infinitely many variables and constraints having the property that every constraint contains at most finitely many variables while every variable appears in at most finitely many constraints. Examples include production planning and equipment replacement over an infinite horizon. We form the natural dual linear programming problem and prove strong duality under a transversality condition that dual prices are asymptotically zero. That is, we show, under this transversality condition, that optimal solutions are attained in both primal and dual problems and their optimal values are equal. The transversality condition, and hence strong duality, is established for an infinite horizon production planning problem.
