Description / Table of Contents: Contents An adaptive procedure for dynamic contingency selection in the on-line security assessment is proposed. Because of the masking effect in conventional performance index algorithms a possibly large number of critical contingencies is misclassified. In the new procedure results of former security checks are used for evaluating the current contingency list. A linear corrective function is applied to transform the standard second orderG-values into improved valuesĜ.

Notes: Abstract Ultrastructural features of spermatozoa and spermatogenesis are described for the first time in a monoplacophoran and compared with data for other conchiferan molluses. Spermatozoa of Laevipilina antarctica Warén and Hain, 1992, are of the structurally simple, aquasperm type, featuring a conical acrosome, a compact nucleus with lacunae, a short midpiece and a single flagellum. The acrosomal vesicle shows an electron-dense inner zone, and a basal invagination (subacrosomal space) contains granular material but no axial rod. The nucleus exhibits a shallow indentation apically which contains subacrosomal material, and five (sometimes four) indentations posteriorly which partially accommodate the five (rarely four) midpiece mitochondria. Two centrioles are present, the distal connected to the annulus by satellite fibres and acting as a basal body for the flagellum (axoneme probably 9+2 structure). Spermatogonia, characterized by an oblong nucleus and one or two nucleoli, line the basal membrane of the testis wall; spermatids of varying stages of maturity occupy the remainder of the testis. Acrosome and flagellum production is already well advanced in spermatids and probably commences at the spermatocyte stage. Cytoplasmic bridges occur in all developmental stages, most visibly in spermatids. The spermatid chromatin condenses in large tracts, leaving electron-lucent lacunae. Mitochondria collect posteriorly and form, presumably by fusion, the five (or four) larger, spherical mitochondria which gather around the centrioles.

Notes: Abstract. This investigation of 219 hemodialysis patients relates the history and prospective risk of bone fractures to apolipoprotein E (apoE) genotype. A greater percentage of the 41 patients with the E3/4 and E4/4 genotypes than of the 38 patients with the E2/3 and E2/2 genotypes had a history of bone fractures at the time of recruitment (44% versus 16%, P 〈 0.005). During the 4 years following recruitment, more of the patients with apoE genotypes E3/4 and E4/4 than with apoE genotypes E2/3 and E2/2 suffered bone fractures, but this difference was not statistically significant (17.1 versus 5.3%, P 〈 0.1). ApoE genotype appears to be an important genetic risk factor for bone fracture, possibly due to its previously reported influence on vitamin K concentrations in blood.

Notes: Summary The quantification of short chain fatty acids in their free form, by gas chromatography, is the method of choice provided that the underivatized acids elute with good peak shape and reproducibility. In biological samples not only the highly polar acids themselves but also deposits of nonvolatile sample components may interact with the column or the packing material. As a result, the peak symmetry of the fatty acids and their reproducibility can become increasingly poor. Reduction of the nonvolatile matrix components by filtration of the sample has been examined in order to achieve direct analysis of the short chain fatty acids in intestinal samples by packed column GC. Membrane filter units (0.8 μm) allow a quick and simple filtration of the samples. This pretreatment reduces the peak tailing and the broadening of the peaks. The method, when applied to different intestinal samples, allowed the quantification of short chain fatty acids in hundreds of samples without derivatization. Good results are obtained at sample concentrations higher than 0.2 mmol l−1 for each acid.

Notes: Summary A pheromone-producing gland was discovered in the second abdominal segment of virgin female tobacco beetles,Lasioderma serricorne (Fabricius). The gland duct extends to an orifice below the genital pore and is supported by a rigid invagination of the integument. Hexane extracts of intact pheromone glands were found attractive to male tobacco beetles and also induced high receptor potentials in the olfactory sensilla of the antennae of maleL. serricorne. A surface extract of virgin females proved to be significantly more attractive than an extract of pheromone glands.

Notes: Abstract Lamellar nigerite is found in Zn-rich spinel from a sample that contains chiefly anthophyllite + spinel + cordierite, lesser amounts of quartz and chlorite, as well as sphalerite, pyrite, pyrrhotite, and galena, and rare cassiterite and rutile. Nigerite can be described as interlayering of spinel-like (R2+Al2O4) and nolanite-like ((Sn, Ti)Al4O8) structures. In nigerite, the spinel-like part is also compositionally related to spinel, but in the nolanite-like part only the structural analogy exists. Stoichiometric assumptions that relate the anhydrous cation sum to the amount of R4+ cations present, allow Fe3+ estimates from microprobe analyses, and a representative analysis gives the following anhydrous formula: Mg1.30Fe 0.65 2+ Zn3.03Mn0.03Al11.65Fe 0.35 3+ Sn0.32Ti0.18O24. The nigerite is Zn-rich with a Zn ratio (Zn/(Zn+Mg+ Fe2+)) of about 0.59, and the Sn ratio (Sn/(Sn+Ti)) that ranges from about 0.63 to 0.41. The Fe3+ content in these samples ranges from 0.35 to 0.52 (24 oxygen basis). Textures suggest that the nigerite could have formed by the breakdown of R 2 2+ (Sn, Ti)O4 and R2+Al2O4 spinel components during more complex reactions. An experimental investigation of the MgAl2O4-Mg2SnO4 join indicates that the solubility of Mg2SnO4 component in spinel over the T interval 500 to 900° C is about 0.5 to 3.0 mole %. This, coupled with the increased solubility expected from the presence of Ti, gives good agreement with the 2.4 to 2.6 mole % R 2 2+ (Sn, Ti)O4 component in spinel that is estimated to be the maximum necessary to form the compositions and amounts of observed nigerite.
