Notes: Abstract The nuclear magnetic susceptibility of bcc solid3He with a small concentration of4He is calculated in the high-temperature approximation. The exchange Hamiltonian used for the system is that obtained from a Hubbard-like cell model developed in earlier work. A brief discussion is also given of our general approach to the study of the magnetic properties of impure solid3He as compared to other approaches to the problem.

Notes: Abstract In earlier work, a model Hamiltonian has been used to study in detail the effects of4He impurities in solid3He. Starting with this Hamiltonian we use the Green function method, with a suitable decoupling scheme, to study the “mass fluctuation” waves caused by the impurities, and also to study the effect of the impurity terms in the Hamiltonian on the magnons of the system. Expressions are presented for the shifted positions of the poles, in the energy plane, corresponding to the excitations concerned.

Notes: Abstract Observations on the pattern of blood circulation in eggs and early larvae of Ambassis, Mugil, Dorosoma and Thrissocles species have been made. In the initial stages, the tubular heart lies on the left side, near the cephalic region. The anterior end of the heart lies near the snout. The posterior end is attached to a point mid-way between the orbits and auditory vesicles; the position of the anterior end is greatly influenced by the size of yolk. Initially, the tubular heart and dorsal aorta lie in a line. As a result of yolk absorption, the anterior end of the tubular heart gradually sinks to a position posterior to the attached end. Liquified yolk is circulated through the heart in early stages; blood corpuscles become apparent only in larvae. The heart-beat, which is initially irregular, gradually becomes regular as development progresses. In the initial stages the blood flows to the caudal and not to the cephalic region. The blood vessels are narrow, and the oval-shaped blood corpuscles must therefore pass through individually, with their long axes parallel to the passage. A definite capillary system is not evident. The blood vessels can dilate and contract when required.

Notes: Abstract Eggs of Thrissocles species are found in surface plankton in the Ernakulam Channel (Cochin Harbour)during February to May 1967. The eggs hatch within 24 h. Empty egg shells have characteristic apertures, through which the embryos have emerged; yolk is resorbed 36 h after hatching.Larvae (36 to 72 h groups) assemble at the lighted region of the aquaria during day-time and scatter to different levels at night. Larvae older than 72 h show no inclination to assemble as before. All larvae died between 96 and 110 h after hatching. Many batches of eggs were reared in the same medium, and all of them behaved as described. The results indicate that the right type of food was available in the aquaria for larvae up to a period of 72 h. The volume of water also appears to have a bearing upon the survival rate and longevity of the larvae since, in small aquaria, more larvae died at an early stage.

Notes: Abstract Employing the gonad index method, the reproductive cycles of three decapod crustaceans, Uca annulipes (Latreille), Portunus pelagicus (Linnaeus) and Metapenaeus affinis (Milne-Edwards) have been studied. In these crustaceans breeding is not continuous all the year round, but extends over several months of the year with distinct peak periods of gonadal activity. The male and female reproductive cycles are not concurrent. The peak of the reproductive cycle of males occurs slightly earlier in the breeding season than that of females. These studies indicate the possibility of production of successive broods of eggs during the same breeding season. In these species, the low saline conditions of the monsoon period are unfavourable for breeding. The medium and high saline conditions during the post-monsoon and pre-monsoon months, respectively, with plenty of planktonic food for the larvae, seem to be the favourable periods for breeding activity.

Notes: Summary Single crystals of copper indium disulfide (CuInS2) have been grown by chemical-vapour transport technique (CVT) using iodine as the transporting agent. The obtained phase was checked by X-ray diffractometry and the presence of copper, indium and sulfur in the grown crystals was confirmed by Energy-Dispersive Spectrum Analysis (EDSA). The mechanical properties of the grown crystals were studied using microindentation analysis. Optical-transmission measurements were done to determine the energy gap of the grown crystals. The four-probe technique was used to measure the electrical properties of the grown crystals. The as-grown crystals were found to bep-type conducting and they were converted ton-type by suitable annealing treatment. The electrical parameters of bothn- andp-type crystals were measured.

Notes: Abstract An alkalophilicBacillus (NCL-87-6-10, NCIM 2128), with a high productivity for extracellular xylanase (EC 3.2.1.8) and free of cellulase, was isolated from soil containing coconut fibre detritus. When grown on a wheat bran/yeast extract medium in submerged culture for 48 h, it produced 100 to 120 IU of enzyme activity per ml. The crude enzyme consists of two fractions of apparent mol sizes of approx 10.4 and 29 kDa in the proportion of 90:10, as determined by native gel exclusion chromatography. Optimum activity of the xylanase was at 60°C and pH 8.0. A two-fold increase in enzyme activity was obtained when reducing agents, thioethanol and dithiothreitol, were included in the assay.
