    Notes: Abstract Experimental data for sorption of Hg, Cd, Cu, and Pb by sand, silt, and organic-rich sediments from the Ottawa River, Canada show significant conformity to Langmuir's equation. Values of the bonding energy constant and the sorption maximum correlate directly with organic content and mean grain size (φ). Desorption experiments indicate that the heavy metals form stable complexes in nitrilotriacetate (NTA) and NaCl Solutions, with the following desorption ratios: Hg, 1:1 (Cl−:NTA); Pb, 1:10; Cd, 1:2. Serial and batch desorption studies under various conditions show that the cation-exchange order in the sediments is Hg〉Pb〉Cu〉Cd. For a given heavy metal the partition coefficient between sediment and solution is not greatly changed by the presence of another cation, provided the latter has the same order of concentration. If, the concentration of one cation exceeds another by more than 10, however, significant desorption of the less concentrated ion takes place on a mass action basis.

    Notes: Abstract Sediment samples of Ottawa River were examined using a relatively new technique, electron microscopy/energy dispersive (EM/ED) microanalyzer, to identify and document the binding sites for mercury on sediments and biota. Samples were deposited on a Nucleopore filter, dried, and then mounted on an aluminum stub for EM/ED analysis. Better images for documentation were obtained by depositing the samples directly on a carbon planchet, thus eliminating the insulation from the filter and the x-ray emmission from the aluminum stub. The salient features of ED x-ray microanalyzer, such as identification of most major and minor elements in a single analysis, and simple spectrum of x-ray energies versus atomic number of elements, are listed. Pitfalls in the methodology of the positive identification of elements resulting from peak shifting and peak overlap in the complex spectra of environmental samples are discussed. Remedies for successful resolution of broad spectra into individual elemental peaks are clearly outlined. Analyses of sediment samples revealed the presence of a variety of structures in aquatic environments with varying elemental compositions. Data gathered on mercury-bearing structures in the present study showed that mercury binding is on sulfur sites but never in a stoichiometric ratio; not all sulfur sites accumulated mercury. Possible reasons for sulfur sites void of mercury are (1) uneven distribution of binding sites, (2) concentrations of mercury too low to saturate all the binding sites, or (3) possible desorption of mercury from the binding sites by either chemical or biologic processes.

    Notes: Abstract Ion-specific electrodes were used to study the binding of Hg2+, Pb2+, Cu2+, and Cd2+ ions to widely used bacterial growth media (Nutrient broth, trypticase soy broth, the medium of Foot and Taylor [6] and of Nelsonet al.[12]) and to media components [yeast extract, peptone, tryptone, proteose peptone, and casamino acids (acid hydrolyzed casein)]. Volatilization of Hg2+ from aqueous solutions could be prevented by any of the growth media or their components. All media bound large amounts of Hg2+, Pb2+, and Cu2+, but much less Cd2+. Of the media components, casamino acids showed the most binding activity for all metal ions; the relative affinity of other media components to different ions varied with the cation studied. In general, the Irving-Williams [8] series for cation affinity to organic ligands was followed: Hg2+〉Pa2+≫ Cu2+≫ Cd2+. After adding 20 ppm of Hg2+, Pb2+, or Cu2+ (concentrations inhibitory to the growth of most microorganisms) to the growth media, 80 ppb or less remained as free cations in the solution. This might suggest that such ions enter bacterial cells as organic complexes, or that bacterial cells can compete successfully with growth media for the bound ions.
