    Notes: Summary Passive ionic permeabilities of synaptosomal membranes from rat brains were measured under various ionic conditions of intra- and extrasynaptosomal solutions by means of radioisotopic tracers, and were treated quantitatively. The efflux rates of Na+ and K+ ions were observed to be affected by the concentrations of permeable monovalent cations inside and outside the membranes, and not by other factors such as the osmotic pressure or the concentrations of anions. The rates increased with the outer concentrations of permeable monovalent cations, and decreased with the inner ones. Na-efflux was most efficiently accelerated by Na+ ions in the outer solution, and K-efflux by K+ ions. At the optimal conditions, K+ ions traversed the membranes much faster than Na+ ions. Cl-efflux was observed to be independent of the ionic condition of the outer solution. These observations could not be explained by simple electrochemical diffusions, and were discussed in relation to an ionic permeation model assuming exchange permeations at certain sites.

    Notes: Abstract  The potential of PCR-based markers for construction of a genetic linkage map in Einkorn wheat was investigated. From a comparison of polymorphisms between two Einkorn wheats, Triticum monococcum (Mn) and T. boeoticum (Bt), we obtained 49 polymorphic bands produced by 33 primers for inter-simple sequence repeat (ISSR) and 36 polymorphic bands shown by 25 combinations of random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) primers for mapping in 66 individuals in the F2 population. Although 44 ISSR fragments and 29 RAPD fragments statistically showed a 3 : 1 segregation ratio in the F2 population, only 9 markers each of the ISSR and RAPD bands were able to be mapped on the RFLP linkage map of Einkorn wheat. ISSR markers were distributed throughout the chromosomes. The mapped positions of the ISSR markers seemed to be similar to those obtained by the RFLP markers. On the other hand, 4 of the 9 RAPD markers could map the RFLP marker-poor region on the short arm of 3Am, suggesting a potential to map novel regions containing repetitive sequences. Comparisons of the genetic linkage map of Einkorn wheat to the linkage map and cytological map of common wheat revealed that the marker orders between the two maps of Einkorn wheat and common wheat coincided except for 4A, which harbors chromosome rearrangements specific for polyploid wheats, indicating a conservatism between the two genomes. Recombinations in Einkorn wheat chromosomes took place more frequently around the centromere and less at the distal part of chromosomes in comparison to those in common wheat. Nevertheless, recombinations even in Einkorn wheat chromosomes were strongly suppressed around the centromere. In fact, the markers located within 1 cM of the centromere were located almost in the central part of the chromosome arm.

    Notes: Summary Patterns of the sex ratio allocation of Gryon japonicum (Ashmead) (Hymenoptera: Scelionidae), a solitary egg parasitoid of Riptortus clavatus (Thunberg) (Heteroptera: Alydidae), were investigated in the laboratory, and the result was checked against the field data on the sex composition of the parasitoid. When five host eggs were presented simultaneously to each of the females of G. japonicum in a laboratory experiment, they had a strong tendency to lay a male egg in second host egg and female eggs in the others. However, when four host eggs were presented to each female more than 3 h after the completion of oviposition on a host egg, most of the females laid male eggs in the third oviposition, i.e. the second host eggs after the experimental interruption of oviposition. These results indicated that there was a mechanism for G. japonicum to produce a male egg in the second host egg in consecutive ovipositions, and that the mechanism was reset by more than 3 h intervals of oviposition. By this mechanism, G. japonicum is thought to produce the precise sex ratio in response to the size of a host egg batch. Field data on the size of a host egg batch and the sex composition of the parasitoid in a host egg batch supported this view.

    Notes: Abstract The adhesive protein allele of mussels collected at 13 points in Japan from Hokkaido to Kyushu was analyzed by the polymerase chain reaction using a set of primers which amplifies a part of the nonrepetitive region of the adhesive protein gene. While most mussels exhibited a 126 bp fragment, characteristic of the pure Mytilus galloprovincialis, 55 of 64 mussels sampled at Hiura and 1 of 14 mussels at Hakodate Port exhibited 168 and 126 bp fragments. Sequence analysis of the two fragments indicated that the 168 and 126 bp fragments are almost identical to previously reported sequences in M. trossulus and M. galloprovincialis, respectively. Since the frequency of heterozygous individuals in Hiura is very high, it is unlikely that they are simple hybrids. However, it is evident that mixing of genes occurred between the two species off Hokkaido.

    Notes: Abstract Two enzymes were purified from the green algaCodium fragile, collected in 1988 at Fukuoka, Japan, by batch-wise ion-exchange extraction, affinity chromatography and ion-exchange high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) using Boc-Ala-Ala-Pro-Arg-pNA as a substrate. The molecular weights of the enzymes were estimated as 38 000 and 39 000, using gel filtration HPLC. The enzymes had the same optimal pH range of 7 to 9 for both activities, and an exclusively hydrolyzed peptide bond on the carboxyl-terminal side of theL-arginine of peptidep-nitroanilides. The ratios of the enzymatic activity for X-Arg-pNA to X-Lys-pNA were larger than 100. The enzymes exhibited 30 times higher activity toward Boc-Ala-Ala-Pro-Arg-pNA when compared with trypsin. The activities were strongly inhibited by diisopropyl phosphofluoridate (DFP), and partially inhibited by phenylmethylsulfonyl fluoride (PMSF), benzamidine, leupeptin and antipain. The isolated enzymes were presumed to be trypsin-like serine protease from their primary substrate specificities and inactivation behavior.

    Notes: Abstract A new system for high-speed and continuous 3D measurement is presented. It is based on the slit-ray projection method. The key component is the image plane constructed by a position-sensitive device (PSD) array that is horizontally un segmented and linear, but vertically numbered. All PSD row elements are attached to their respective analog signal processors. The analog signals are multiplexed and digitized by multiplexers and A/D converters at appropriate sampling intervals and stored in memory. By virtue of this configuration of the image plane, basis data for 3D measurement are acquired during only one scan of the slit ray at high speed in the form of memory addresses and data. Moreover, if we use large capacity and/or dual port memories, we can continuously obtain 3D range data for as many scenes as needed. The trial system has been implemented with a newly designed 128-channel PSD array and has verified our method, enabling us to obtain successive 3D range data at video rates with an error within±0.3%.

    Notes: Abstract The life history and reproductive biology of the trochid sand snail Umbonium costatum (Kiener) were investigated on a subtidal sandy shore in Hakodate Bay, Japan between 1988 and 1991. Female U. costatum mature at 1 yr of age (shell diameter-11 mm), reproduce twice (in June-July and September-October) in successive years, grow to a maximum size (shell diameter=22 mm) at age 8 yr, increase annual fecundity with age from 2000 (age 1 yr) to 37000 (age 8 yr), and show a maximum monthly gonad somatic index of 8% which is constant among ages. In comparison to a previously studied life history of a tropical Umbonium vestiatium, temperate U. costatum shows more sustained growth and a longer life span after maturation. This could be explained by: (1) the optimal size model concerned with resource investment, in gametes (Sebens 1987); and by (2) bet hedging to compensate large variability in larval success at high latitudes. These two hypotheses are not mutually exclusive, but both are based on season-related extremes of environment at high latitudes where the period suitable for reproduction is short.
