    Notes: Abstract The dynamics of optical filaments in broad aperture semiconductor lasers was studied. We use the model where one longitudinal mode is taken into account. The spectrum and the instabilities of lateral modes joined with the above mentioned longitudinal mode were investigated. The structures arise due to instability of various number of lateral modes. On the background of these modes we found a new type of modulation with a frequency depending on the laser aperture width. This frequency is smaller than the electron-photon resonance one. The existence of the modulation was confirmed by experimental investigations of broad aperture laser noise spectra.

    Notes: Summary Formalin-fixed paraffin sections of livers, spleens and kidneys from patients with primary, secondary and familial amyloidosis as well as from a casein-induced murine amyloid model were analysed by an immunocy-tochemical (unlabeled antibody enzyme) method utilizing antisera to amyloid-related proteins. All amyloid deposits of all amyloid types showed positive reactions with anti-AP of the respective species. Positive reaction of anti-human AA to human secondary amyloid deposits and of anti-mouse AA to the deposits of casein-induced murine amyloid was also observed, but there was no species cross reactivity. No significant deposition of the reaction products was produced by anti-immunoglobulin light chains on deposits of any amyloid type, or by anti-AA in the tissues from primary or familial amyloidosis. The results indicate that amyloid proteins AA and AP can survive as antigens through routine histologic preparation, that anti-AP can be a universal marker for deposits of any amyloid type within the same species, and that AA-type amyloid can be identified by this method while there may as yet be no feasible universal marker for the AL-type at present.

    Notes: Summary Localization of protein AP, which is known to be associated with all amyloid-laden tissues in systemic amyloidoses, was studied by an immunocytochemical peroxidase-antiperoxidase staining method in a series of localized amyloidosis, i.e. islet amyloid, lichen amyloidosus, and nodular amyloidosis of the respiratory and urinary tracts. The amyloid fibrils of these localized amyloidoses are believed to be of three different chemical classes belonging to the AE, AD and AL type, respectively. The present study revealed that protein AP was present in amyloid deposits in all tissues examined, thus supporting that protein AP is present in amyloid deposits not only of all types of systemic amyloidosis but also different forms of localized amyloidosis.

    Notes: Abstract Coronite-bearing anorthositic granulites consisting of olivine, orthopyroxene, clinopyroxene, garnet and plagioclase assemblages are particularly well preserved at Gaupås and Holsnöy in the Bergen Arc of West Norway. The coronites are considered to have formed near T= 900° C and P=10 Kb by two stages of subsolidus reaction from an anorthositic gabbro parent. The first reaction involved ol+plag→cpxI+opxI+sp and the second cpxI+opxI+sp+pl→cpxII+opxII+gn. The incomplete reaction products are preserved to varying extents in different corona structures. Sm-Nd isotopic data for each of four coronas yield precise isochrons, and demonstrate isochronism both between the constituent phases of the corona assemblages and dispersed ground mass phases. Three individual coronas not associated with shear zones yield ages of 907±9 my, 912±18 my and 905±37 my. Eclogite facies mineralogy is developed locally in shear zones, which are shown by Sm-Nd and Rb-Sr analyses to be Caledonian in age. Where relict corona structures survive unsheared within these zones, Nd exchange between the constituent phases cannot be resolved. This observation together with sympathetic Ca/Mg and Sm/Nd zoning preserved at T∼900° C in the garnet mantles of coronites places a limit on the diffusivity of Nd in pyropic garnets which is no higher than published experimental values for Mg in pyrope-almandine garnets. Consequently even in slowly-cooled granulite terrains, garnet grains are expected to yield Sm-Nd chronologies very close to the time of mineral growth.

    Notes: Abstract The concentrations and isotopic compositions of Sr, Nd, Pb, He and C have been determined for suites of xenoliths from Bullenmerri (Australia), Ichinomegata (Japan), Geronimo (Arizona), and East Africa. The wehrlites and pyroxenites from Bullenmerri have Sr, Nd and Pb isotopic compositions that are generally similar to those found for alkali basalts in the region. The spinel lherzolites, in contrast, have higher 87Sr/86Sr and 206Pb/204Pb and lower 143Nd/144Nd ratios. Whereas the isotopic compositions of He are generally within the range of mid-ocean-ridge basalts (MORB) and do not covary with those of other trace elements, there is an apparent correlation between the 13C/12C and 143Nd/144Nd ratios for each of the two petrologic groups. These relationships, if substantiated for other xenolith suites, greatly limit the possible mechanisms for generating lithophile and volatile isotopic variations in the continental lithosphere. The helium isotopic compositions for all of the xenoliths fall within the range for MORB. This includes those from Ichinomegata, suggesting that the lower 3He/4He ratios found for He sampled at the surface at subduction zones result from mixing mantle He with near-surface crustal He rather than with subducted radiogenic He. Measured C isotopic compositions (relative to Peedee belemnite) for the Ichinomegata xenoliths $$\left( {\mathop \delta \nolimits^{^{13} } C_{PD{\text{B}}} = - 3.2 to - 17.5} \right)$$ include values that are both lighter and heavier than those in MORB, and are compatible with contributions from subducted carbon. The Nd and Sr isotopic compositions of the Ichinomegata xenoliths exhibit a correlation over a substantially greater range of values than typically observed for other light-rare-earth-element (LREE)-depleted xenoliths, and include more radiogenic Sr and less radiogenic Nd compositions. The carbon isotopic compositions found for the East African and Geronimo xenoliths extend to values that are lighter than those typically found for MORB.

    Notes: Abstract The pattern of Th, U and Rb depletion has been investigated in a suite of contrasting lithologies from the classic Lewisian granulite terrain at Scourie, N.W. Scotland. The study is based on lithologies ranging from ultramafic to tonalitic gneisses, together with calcsilicate and pelitic metasediments, sampled on the metre scale. Because of their close proximity, all of these lithologies have experienced identical P-T-t histories since depletion; however, their expected dehydration and melting characteristics are markedly different. Pb isotope analyses of the samples define the latest time of U/Pb fractionation as 2.665±0.026 Ga, and indicate substantial U and Th depletion relative to Pb in tonalitic and mafic lithologies, and in some metasediments. In contrast, ultramafic samples show no U and Th depletion. Sm-Nd isotope analyses of the mafic and ultramafic samples define an age of 2.707±0.052 Ga, which is interpreted as the time of igneous differentiation of the mafic-ultramafic bodies. This time is indistinguishable from the latest time of Th−Pb and U−Pb fractionation. Overall there is a straightforward relationship between the magnitude of depletion, lithology and the stability of mineral phases. Tonalitic and mafic gneisses are depleted in Th and U relative to Pb, whereas ultramafic gneisses which retain amphibole show no evidence for depletion. The observations are consistent with loss of U, Th and Rb in fluids produced by metamorphic dehydration and melting. A role for externally derived CO2 in the depletion process is not excluded by the data but there is no evidence for it having existed. Limits are placed on the length scale of transport for several elements. U, Th and Rb are depleted regionally from mafic and tonalitic lithologies; transport distances must have been on the kilometre scale. In contrast, movements of Sm and Nd have been more restricted.
