Notes: Abstract This paper chronicles the work of the TEI textual criticism working groups through several phases, documenting how and why the design goals were shaped by the requirements of several distinct user communities and by the nature of the textual evidence itself. Encoding schemes for the representation of physical details of textual witnesses were unified with encoding schemes for critical editing practices when it was observed that the two phenomena were inextricably layered and linked within real texts. Rationale is offered for the development teams' adherence to exceedingly general design principles: (a) the requirement that the encoding notations be neutral in text-theoretic terms; (b) the need to accommodate dramatically different text-transmission phenomena and research goals within diverse text-critical arenas; (c) the need for commensurability of the text-critical markup with encoding notations used in closely related text-analytic research. The paper also assesses the results of the effort in terms of the encoding scheme's adequacy for several scholarly purposes: suggestions are made concerning the need for programmatic testing, for refinement, and for extension of the encoding model to support a broader range of text-transmission phenomena and research objectives.

Notes: Abstract Volcan Popocatepetl, which lies 70 km southeast of Mexico City, is one of the most famous andesite composite volcanoes in the world. With 5,450 m of elevation, it is the second highest peak of Mexico. Located 320 km north of the Middle America Trench, at the centre of the Mexican Volcanic Belt, Volcano Popocatepetl forms the southern active part of a northsouth volcanic complex, the northern part consisting of the eroded Volcano Iztaccihuatl. Since its earliest reported eruption in 1519, Volcano Popocatepetl has had a continuous fumarolic activity in its crater, and in frequent small eruptions (1720, 1802–1804, 1920). In contrast with this light activity, C14 data indicate pre-historical cycles of intense volcanism with paroxysmal pyroclastic eruptions (ash and pumice-flows) alternating with effusive phases and plinian air-fall deposits. The results of a volcanological study and the petrological characteristics of the main volcanic units show that Volcano Popocatepetl is composed of a primitive composite-volcano on which a recent summit cone is superimposed. It has been built during 2 very dissimilar volcanic periods linked by a transitional phase.

Notes: Abstract In this paper we carry out technical efficiency and productivity growth comparisons among the four largest European carriers and eight of their American counterparts. The time period of our comparisons is 1976 through 1986. This is a particularly interesting period since it begins just after the informal steps toward deregulation in the United States and ends just prior to the introduction of the first wave of reforms by the Council of Ministers in Europe. We also identify the potential efficiency gains of the European liberalization by comparing efficiency differences between the two carrier groups. The reductions in inefficiency describe the amount that inputs can be decreased without altering output.

Notes: Abstract Firm-specific and temporal patterns of technical efficiency of the interstate natural gas transmission industry during the implementation of the Natural Gas Policy Act are estimated by two alternative methodologies. A new panel stochastic frontier systems estimator exploits the potential exogeneity of certain regressors from firm effects. This allows for heterogeneity in slopes, as well as in intercepts. Patterns of technical efficiency based on the structural stochastic model are compared with those based on deterministic programming methods, data envelopment analysis. Concordant findings based on these alternative methodologies suggest a perversive pattern of declining technical efficiency in the industry during the period of phased in well-head price deregulation.

Notes: Abstract In this article we analyze the relationship between risk-avoidance behavior and economic jointness in a multi-output agricultural technology. We focus on farmer specific heterogeneity in attitudes towards risk-taking, while treating production uncertainty as unobserved stochastic error that is common to all region specific farms. We furthermore utilize a new flexible functional form, the Constant Elasticity of Transformation, Constant Elasticity of Substitution, Generalized Leontief (Behrman, Lovell, Pollak, and Sickles, [1992]) which has the appealing property of relative flexibility while ensuring proper curvature properties of the estimated multi-output technology over a larger sample region of the price/quantity space than a flexible form such as the Generalized Leontief [Diewert, 1971]. Our empirical study deals with small-scale agriculture in the Indian Semi-Arid Tropics (SAT), partly because of the importance of yield-related risk in this region, but also because we have measures of farmer specific risk attitudes in the SAT data. Our modeling approach allows for the calculation of the shadow cost of farmer specific risk attitudes in terms of foregone profits, while at the same time controlliing for the technical factors that give rise to multi-output production in the absence of risk. We are thus able to estimate these opportunity costs while modeling a multiple output technology in which cost complementarities can lead to diversified production and in which joint production is not always undertaken.
