    Notes: Abstract The 7- and 8-Iodnonulosonic acid derivatives1 and2 react with tributyltinhydride-AIBN to the 7- and 8-deoxy-N-acetylneuraminic acid derivatives3 a and4 a which after hydrolysis give the 7-deoxy-N-acetylneuraminic acid3 b (5-N-acetamido-3,5,7-trideoxy-β-D-galacto-2-nonulopyranosidonic acid=7-Deoxy-Neu5Ac) and 8-deoxy-N-acetylneuraminic acid4 b (5-N-acetamido-3,5,8-trideoxy-β-D-galacto-2-nonulopyranosidonic acid=8-Deoxy-Neu5Ac). The 4,8,9-tris-(t-butyldimethylsilyl)-N-acetylneuraminic acid derivative5 a yields after transformation to the 7-O-acetyl compound5 b and partial removing of the protecting groups the derivative5 c. Further reaction with theMitsunobu-reagent and methyliodide affords the 9-Iodocompound6 a which turned to the 8-O-acetylderivative6 b. Subsequent reduction by means of tributyltinhydride yields first the 9-deoxyderivative7 a and after hydrolysis the 9-deoxy-N-acetylneuraminic acid7 b (5-N-acetyl amido-3,5,9-trideoxy-D-glycero-β-d-galacto-2-nonulopy-ranosidonic acid=9-Deoxy-Neu5Ac). Another synthesis of7 b follows the route8 f →8 g →7 c. The Deoxy-N-acetylneuraminic acid3 b could be prepared also by an alternative procedure using the methyl-β-8,9-methylethylen-4-O-t-butyldimethylsilyl-N-acetylneuraminic acid methylester8 a via the intermediate compounds8 d and8 e. Application of the 8,9-O-methylethyliden-N-acetylneuraminic acid derivative8 opens an approach to the xanthogenates8 a and8 b which could be reduced to the deoxy-N-acetylneuraminic acid derivatives9 a and10 a. Hydrolysis of10 a yields the 4,7-dideoxy-N-acetylneuraminic acid10 b (5-N-acetamido-3,4,5,7-tetradeoxy-β-D-lyxo-2-nonulopyranosidonic acid=4,7-Dideoxy-Neu5Ac).

Notes: Summary NRA and SIMS measurements were carried out with samples from naturally weathered medieval glass paintings in order to study the quantitative depth distribution of hydrogen in the surface layers. The major parts of the profiles show good agreements in shape and depth. Nevertheless, differences were observed in the near-surface region. It could be shown that proper attention has to be paid to the vacuum environment of the instruments and to sample preparation before evacuation in order to avoid evaporation of hydrogen containing species incorporated into the silicate structure during leaching or weathering.

Notes: Summary The layers formed on surfaces of leached silicate glass with potassium and calcium oxides were investigated by secondary ion mass spectrometry and nuclear reaction analysis. The results revealed a distinct influence of the corroding media on the leaching kinetics of the glasses. Details are discussed.

Notes: Abstract Various deoxy- and epi-derivatives ofN-acetylneuraminic acid were synthesized and tested for their substrate properties withN-acetylneuraminate lyase fromClostridium perfringens.N-Acetyl-9-deoxyneuraminic acid is a good substrate,N-acetylneuraminic acid derivatives with epimeric configuration at C-7, C-8 or both are cleaved slowly, whileN-acetyl-4-epi-,N-acetyl-4-deoxy-,N-acetyl-7-deoxy-andN-acetyl-8-deoxyneuraminic acid are resistant to enzyme action.N-Acetyl-4-deoxyneuraminic acid andN-acetyl-4-epineuraminic acid competitively inhibit the enzyme. These studies give further insight into a mechanism proposed for the reversible cleavage of sialic acids byN-acetylneuraminate lyase.

Notes: Summary The frictional contact behaviour of extensible and flexible strips on rigid ground and loaded by transversal pressure is considered analytically. Complete and asymptotic solutions are presented. For specific cases diagrams are derived which can be used for engineering applications. One practical relevance of these problems is discussed with regard to the uplift of the bottom plate of vertical unanchored liquid storage tanks. The complicated behaviour of the uplift of a strip adhered to the ground is briefly investigated. Analytically obtained results of these nonlinear problems are compared with finite element solutions.

Notes: Abstract We evaluated deuterium oxide (D2O) as a tracer for cardiac output measurements. Cardiac output measurements made by thermodilution were compared with those made by indicator dilution with D2O and indocyanine green as tracers. Five triplicate measurements for each method were made at intervals of 30 minutes in each of 9 anesthetized, mechanically ventilated goats. Cardiac output ranged between 0.68 and 3.79 L/min. The 45 data points yielded a correlation coefficient of 0.948 for the comparison of D2O indicator dilution cardiac output measurements with thermodilution measurements and a linear regression slope of 1.046. D2O indicator dilution measurements were biased by −0.11±0.22 L/min compared with thermodilution measurements and had a standard deviation of ±0.12 L/min for triplicate measurements. Hematocrits ranging between 20 and 50 vol% had no effect on optical density for D2O. D2O is more stable than indocyanine green and approximately one-tenth the price (40 cents per injection compared with $4). The basic instrumentation cost of approximately $9,000 is an additional initial expense, but provides the ability to perform pulmonary extravascular water measurements with a double-indicator dilution technique. D2O has potential as a tracer for the clinical determination of indicator dilution cardiac output measurements and pulmonary extravascular water measurements.

Notes: Abstract The Ames Salmonella/microsomal activation mutagenesis assay has been modified to improve sensitivity and reproducibility to complex mixtures derived from the refining and processing of petroleum. Oil samples were dissolved in cyclohexane and subsequently extracted with dimethyl sulfoxide to produce aqueous compatible solutions which readily interact with tester bacteria. Also, the liver homogenate (S-9) and NADP cofactor concentrations were increased and hamster rather than rat liver S-9 was used. The initial slope of the dose response curve relating mutagenicity (revertants per plate) to the dose of extract added was used as an index of mutagenic activity, this slope was obtained through a computerized curve fitting procedure. The modified assay was used to rank 18 oil samples for mutagenic activity, this ranking correlates highly (r = 0.92) with potency rankings of the same samples previously determined from dermal carcinogenicity bioassays. Sensitivity and reproducibility of the assay are sufficient to permit routine use for detecting potential carcinogenic activity of individual refinery streams and blends which contain components boiling above 500°F.
