Notes: Summary Spectacular large (3 cm) euhedral trapezohedra composed of single crystals of analcime or aggregates of pumpellyite occur in three stratigraphically adjacent phonolitic lavas from Aghda. The trapezohedra contain concentrically arranged inclusions of plagioclase, pyroxene, titanomagnetite and apatite which are fresh in the analcime but extensively altered in the pumpellyite. The analcime crystals are remarkably homogeneous in composition and are interpreted as having formed by ion-exchange pseudomorphous replacement of primary leucite. In the lower phonolite, however, the analcime became unstable and was replaced by pumpellyite which has a wide compositional range, reflecting variable input of Fe, Mg, Ca and Al from the precursor analcime and alteration of inclusions. The occurrence of analcime and pumpellyite at Aghda is indicative of zeolite facies conditions with low fCO 2and H2O activity and probably high Pfluid.

Notes: Abstract The problem of time operator in quantummechanics is revisited. The unsharp measurement modelfor quantum time based on the dynamical system-clockinteraction is studied. Our analysis shows that theproblem of the quantum time operator with continuousspectrum cannot be separated from the measurementproblem for quantum time.

Notes: Abstract Male-produced rectal gland secretions of a number of species now considered to be members of theBactrocera dorsalis complex of fruit flies have been examined by combined gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The structures of a number of previously unreported compounds have been confirmed by synthesis and Chromatographic comparisons. Compounds identified in these secretions include fatty acids, esters, amides, keto alcohols, diols and spiroacetals. These chemical findings are in agreement with taxonomic revisions based on other criteria.

Notes: Abstract Laboratory experiments with natural phytoplankton assemblages from three lakes (two mesotrophic and one oligotrophic) showed that added PO4 predictably affected growth rate (µ, determined as P : B) while NO3 had little effect even when the N P ratio approached one. The response to PO4 followed the typical Monod-type function. The lack of effect of NO3 on µ at such low N : P ratios is in striking contrast to the added effect of NO3 Plus PO4 on maximum biomass produced versus only PO4 alone.

Notes: Abstract Short-term (16 h) laboratory studies of 32P uptake by Elodea densa rooted in sediment demonstrated both foliar and root uptake, and that translocation occurred acropetally and basipetally. Root absorption is projected to provide 83–85% of total phosphorus uptake during 12–16 h photoperiod days. Measured foliar uptake and excretion rates suggest that there would be no net leakage of phosphorus into the water by undamaged actively-growing E. densa. Foliar uptake decreased and root uptake increased in the dark relative to rates under light.

Notes: Abstract The benthic macroinvertebrate population of a stream in an urbanized watershed was compared to the benthos in a rural stream. Using buried samplers, no significant difference between streams was found in total numbers of invertebrates, indicating no long term loss of colonization potential in the urban stream. Classifying the benthos in functional family groupings (based on Cummins, 1973) showed the rural stream to have nearly twice the functional diversity of the urban stream. The benthos of the urban stream was dominated by a few groups of invertebrates which could adapt to the erosional/depositional nature of the substrate and could utilize transient, low quality food sources. The density of invertebrates was adequate to support a coho salmon and cutthroat trout population in the urban stream. Apparently, the salmonids feed on available benthos and do not select specific benthic trophic groups. An evaluation of six similarity coefficients using cluster analysis showed that only the Canberra Metric index was able to represent the raw data according to known data associations.
