    Notes: Abstract In the present paper an attempt has been made to draw theoretically a correlation between the well-known Paschen curve and the high-frequency breakdown characteristic of a gas device by interpreting electron mean free path in terms of the frequency of the applied field. The analytical high-frequency breakdown characteristic, so obtained, agree fairly well with the experimental results.

    Notes: Summary The interaction between anionic (sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate) surfactant and nonionic (Tri and Tetra propylene glycol monomethyl ether) surfactant was studied using nuclear magnetic resonance measurement. It was observed that the addition of sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate to the solution of nonionic surfactant (Tri and Tetra propylene glycol mono methyl ether) caused an upfield shift of the central protons of the nonionic surfactants. The aromatic protons of sodium-dodecyl benzene sulfonate undergo a very small, almost negligible, downfield shift. The changes in the chemical shift values and the integration values of the polypropylene protons and benzene protons was interpreted in terms of mixed micelle formation with the simultaneous presence of highly fluid mixed micelles of varying compositions.

    Description / Table of Contents: Abstract Были приготовлены образцы окиси никеля, насышенные литием и индием, с содержанием допанта до 3 ат.%-ов. Были исследованы электрические свойства этих образцов. Для всех образцов была обнаружена проводимость типа р, которая возрастает с литиевым насыщением и уменышается с индиевым насыщением. Дегидрирование 2-пропанола на этих катаизаторах уменьшается с увеличением концетрации дырок в твердом веществе. Ступенью, лимитирующей скорость процесса, является десорбция ацетона. Предлагается вероятный менанизм протекания процесса.
    Notes: Abstract Lithium and indium doped nickel oxide samples have been prepared with up to 3 at. % of dopant. The electrical properties of these samples have been studied. All the samples exhibit p-type conductivity which increases with lithium doping and decreases upon doping with indium. Dehydrogenation of 2-propanol on these catalysts increases with the hole concentration in the solid. Desorption of acetone appears to be the rate-determining step. A possible mechanism for the reaction is proposed.

    Notes: Summary Using monofunctional (Angelicin) and bifunctional furocoumarins (Psoralen and 8 Methoxypsoralen) plus 365 nm light it is shown that both damages, the induced monoadducts and/or crosslinks in DNA, provoke lethal and mutagenic effects in haploid and diploid cells ofSaccharomyces cerevisiae. Bifunctional furocoumarins are about 20 times more effective in cell killing than Angelicin. Diploid cells are always more resistant than haploid cells. Dark repair (agar holding) increases survival. This effect can be at least in part correlated to the release of bound material from DNA in dark repair conditions. Bifunctional psoralens (10 µg/ml) are at least 10-fold more effective in inducing nuclear gene back mutations (his− to HIS+) than Angelicin (10 µg/ml) plus 365 nm light or 254 nm ultraviolet light. In contrast cytoplasmic “petite” (ς-) mutations are about as frequently induced by Angelicin plus 365 nm light as by 254 nm UV light. Bifunctional furocoumarins are less effective. The frequency of cytoplasmic “petite” mutations per survivors decreases during dark repair conditions more efficiently after Angelicin than after Psoralen plus 365 nm light treatment.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Die Arbeit befaßt sich mit dem Vergleich der Ξ-Potentialbestimmung mit 4 verschiedenen Methoden. Die Bestimmung des Sedimentationspotentials nachQuist undWashburn wurde modifiziert und verbessert. Als System wurden sphärische Glaspartikel und nichtkugelige Rutilpartikel in KCl- und BaCl2-Lösungen verwendet. Differenzen bis zu 20% traten auf. Als Ursache werden i) Unvollständigkeit der Theorie ii) Oberflächenleitfähigkeit und iii) Unterschiede in der Dicke der hydrodynamischen Grenzschicht diskutiert.
    Notes: Summary Very little literature exists regarding comparability of Ξ-potential values of identical systems computed by means of more than one of the four known categories of methods. Of the four methods, two, viz. sedimentation potential (SP) and electrophoretic mobility (EM) methods involve migration of solid particles immersed in liquid medium under force fields, and hence merit comparative investigation. The procedure for measurement of sedimentation potential outlined byQuist andWashburn (8) has been modified and improved upon. ΞSP and Ξ EM values for spherical glass particles as well as non-spherical rutile particles immersed in KCl and BaC2 solutions in different concentrations show discrepancies of the order of ±20 percent. This exceeds cumulative reproducibility error, and may be due to (i) imperfection in theory (ii) surface conductivity effect and (iii) difference in hydrodynamic boundary layer thickness values.
