Notes: Looks at the sequel to the article about running negotiating workshops for managers. Explains relevant theory and the practice of negotiations. Issues include the context of negotiations, offers and counter-offers, avoidance of deadlock, the use of third parties and "back channels", cultural aspects and the maintenance of agreements. Gives particular attention to the issue of internal team differences. Presents relevant examples from a range of situations.

Notes: Outlines key areas of the Government White Paper Fairness at Work. Identifies the training implications in the proposed changes in collective law and in the improvements in the individual rights of employees. Concludes that the most important training needs are likely to arise in the extension of unfair dismissal protection and the right for employees to have trade union representation in disciplinary and grievance hearings. Also examines the training needs arising out of the arbitration option in unfair dismissal proceedings and those arising out of the establishment of a National Minimum Wage and other legislative developments, including the Working Time Regulations. Examines also the issue of collective bargaining about training. This is an issue that the Government is considering, as opposed to proposing.

Notes: Management training for international students is an increasingly large, but competitive and volatile, global market. Training providers need to ensure that they are market-oriented and avoid an ethnocentric approach. Programme delivery needs to take account of the national context in which students are, or will be, working. Potential action points are identified that may help improve the quality of management training in particular. Developing a positive reputation is part of the marketing process. In-house training of lecturing staff in the special needs of international students may be necessary.

Notes: Employee participation is in the news because of the stakeholder concept and European legal developments. Argues that for most employees what matters is the working relationship with their boss, rather than indirect forms of representation, such as works councils. If employers are genuine about participation, the prime area of attention needs to be the day-to-day behaviour of line managers. This necessitates reviewing the performance, selection and training of line managers. This is also necessary if indirect forms of participation are to work as they too depend on effective and co-operative line management. Participation also needs to be examined in the context of organisational and national culture and the pressures on an organisation at particular points in time. Too often the topic is addressed as though the objectives can be achieved simply through mechanistic/legal imposition.

Notes: The range and importance of issues on which managers have to negotiate is increasing. This is the first of two articles based on the experience of running negotiating workshops, both in-house and at the University of Westminster. Explains the training methodology, which was mainly, but not completely, based on experiential and discovery learning. Identifies process skills as being crucial. Discusses the generic skills that are needed and which can be developed in negotiating workshops.

Notes: Work undertaken in collaboration with BPICS, Cincom (UK) Ltd andICI Engineering supported by funding from the EPSRC (CDP). The projectreviewed planning and scheduling procedures in over 30 industrialcompanies over a two-year period to establish best practice inshop-floor scheduling and to identify the key factors for schedulingsuccess. Outlines the research approach briefly to provide a frameworkfor the analysis of scheduling performance by industrial sector and byscheduling tool. This includes a powerful method for the performancemeasurement of supply-chain management systems which allows thecomparison of effectiveness in different operating environments and whenusing a variety of scheduling approaches. Important elements of theproject were the review and comparison of scheduling performance inconventional MRPII environments (usually a manual activity based onexpediting or the use of shop floor control) with that of more recentfinite capacity-based tools and a classification of schedulingapproaches. Some clear lessons have been learned. Concludes bypresenting these along with an outline of the success factors whichunderpin effective scheduling performance in the range of best practicecompanies identified.

Notes: Investigates the relationship between brand characteristics - awareness level and image - and their influence on consumers' perceptions of retail image. Proposes a model of relationships between the number of recognizable brands carried by a retail establishment, the presence/absence of an anchor brand, and perceptions of retail image. Presents the analysis and results of a study designed to test the model. In addition, develops and tests a measure of retail store image. Indicates that one tactic for ensuring a favorable retail store image is a merchandise mix composed of a relatively high number of brands possessing high brand awareness, and one or more brands with a strong brand image. Offers recommendations for both brand and retail managers.

Notes: Since the early 1970s, production planning systems have evolved from material requirements planning (MRP) through manufacturing resource planning (MRPII) into enterprise resource planning (ERP) with simultaneous development of related control systems such as theory of constraints (epitomised by OPT), just-in-time (JIT), etc. One key area for all manufacturing companies is the planning and control function. There is a wide range of generic proprietary software available that aims to meet a company's planning and scheduling requirements. The difficulty experienced by many companies is not only in examining available software, but also in understanding the match between business needs and the capabilities of that software. This paper first sets out some common manufacturing classification systems, then attempts to map them against accepted paradigms for production planning and control approaches. Analysis confirms the need for a more rigorous approach to software selection, and the need for a complete understanding of the drivers of the production control process before this can be achieved. The paper goes on to discuss a method for mapping these drivers, with the aim being to create a series of reference models for production planning and scheduling.

Notes: Discusses the relationships between finite schedulers which operateon output from a higher level in a conventional MRPII system, andso-called stand-alone schedulers which essentially operate directly onorders. Presents two graphical models - a demand flow model and aflowpipe model - which help to explain the differences betweensuch schedulers and are used to illustrate the key features of each.Coupled schedulers tend to work on demand which has already beensmoothed or planned in some way and can be described as planning-led,whereas stand-alone schedulers work from unfiltered data, with theoperator reacting to schedule quality (due-date performance, resourceactivation levels, etc.) and thence adjusting resource and rerunning.Ascribes the growth of the stand-alone scheduler, at least in part, tothe greatly increased computing power available quite inexpensively onmodern equipment.
